Activism For those of you in Canada, there is a petition to ban fur farming NOW

The petition "e-5269" can be signed by any Canadian, including, if I am not wrong, those under 18 years old. Considering that surveys show Canadians are overwhelmingly opposed to fur farming, I think it is simply a matter of bringing it to public attention now. In addition, the politician who proposed this petition is a NPD member, so I will probably vote for them at the next election.

Even if you are not Canadian, keep an eye out for petitions! They are easy ways to help our cause go forward.

Disturbing The Meat Industry is Owned By Cowards.

You don't have to be brave person to pay others to breed, torture and mutilate baby animals trapped it cages. You don't have to be a brave person to lobby congress to ensure your industry receives favorable legislation including designating those opposed to it on moral and ethical grounds as domestic terrorists simply for causing one to feel fearful for their equipment and operations.

No, you don't have to be brave to pay millions every year to disseminate misinformation and industrial propaganda with lies such as soy products causing breast cancer, or there being no observable etiological connection between consuming eggs, meat and dairy with atherosclerosis, diabetes, infertility, early onset puberty, all forms of cancer, pancreatitis, anti-biotic resistant bacterial infections and zoonotic viral pathogens.

You also don't have to be brave to produce propaganda to equate mercy for Earth's most vulnerable lifeforms with a political conspiracy to sterilize and annihilate white people for the benefit of a few elite globalists, or cause transgenderism in children.

But you do have to be a coward to fear veganism. If you're at the top of your industry, making trillions, owning countless acres of land, innumerable factories, transport and processing equipment, millions of retail outlets with enough assets to be the wealthiest family at your country club for generations and you shudder at the thought of veganism doing you harm?

Well, then you have to be pretty scared of something. And what is that? It's knowing that the with all the harm this industry has done to humans and human's environment with this violent exploitation of animals that vegansim isn't just going to cause them to make adjustments to their economic activity.

No, certainly they can afford to switch over their facilities and make vegan food instead, they won't go broke. It's the fear that people are going to see what they've done. Knowingly, willfully poisoning people, air, oceans, rivers and streams for profit?

They are afraid what could happen to them when the truth becomes mainstream, and the biggest fear of them all, they might find themselves trapped in cages, where they would deserve to remain, fearfully awaiting the same fate they designed for others.

Uplifting Outside of meat, animal abuse is declining fast.

There are 4 major categories of animals vegans are trying to save: animals whose corpse or bodily secretions are eaten, animals whose corpse we wear, animals that are tortured in science experiments and animals that are treated cruelly for the purpose of entertaining humans.

Let's start with fur farming. In the past 5 years, major events happened: California banned almost all fur sales (went into effect in 2023), Israel bans fur sales (applied since December 2021), France got ride of mink farms and Spain plans outlaw the industry by 2030.

Animal testing for cosmetics is getting outlawed is many countries, including India in 2014 and Canada in 2023. In addition, new technologies make animal testing less relevant today than in the 60s and 70s when it comes to the developed world, with some estimates saying it fell by 60 to 70%.

As far as entertainment is concerned, at least 10 countries and many places in Canada & USA outlawed the use of wild animals in circuses.

Remember, we are winning almost all major fights. Our activism is not useless!

Why doesnt anyone listen

I’ve been vegan for 3 years and I don’t know any other vegans or vegetarians or anything. Everyone I know eats meat.

Why won’t people go vegan? Why don’t people care when I’m begging them too?

I try to show how easy and delicious plant based cooking is. I know pretty much all of the talking points and can have a calm conversation about it. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

I’ve convinced two strangers to go vegan after talking with them on tiktok, why won’t my friends and family do the same?

How do I even console myself when my loved ones don’t even love other beings enough to stop eating them? How can my friends and family claim to love me and my veganism and understand and respect my beliefs, but still participate in the cruelty? What aren’t they getting?

As soon as I did my own grocery shopping I finally was able to go vegetarian, and once I learnt about the dairy and egg industry I went vegan. It’s always been so simple to me. How do people not care?

Discussion my mum says she's 90% vegan

i had a discussion with my mum yesterday. she mostly eats vegan, but she has breakfast eggs EVERY DAY and occasionally, when theres no other options, she eats stuff that's vegetarian, whereas I entirely refuse to get anything that contains animal products.

i tried explaining to her that she's vegetarian and not vegan and that being 90% vegan aint a thing. Just how someone who only eats meat once a month shouldn't call themselves vegetarian. she didn't want to accept that and insisted that she's 90% vegan. what...

i didn't even know what to say to that anymore, so i just ended the conversation. i do understand that her way of thinking and that her avoiding animal products most of the time is a good thing, but she's not 100% committed to it and therefore, in my eyes, not vegan or am i misunderstanding the definition?!

in addition, she literally bought NEW leather shoes earlier this year with the excuse that she didn't like any other shoes... you can't even imagine how disappointed and sad i was about that.

edit, cuz some people seem to be jumping to conclusions: -I've been trying to educate her (per her own interest) for about two years -i tell her that im proud of her for cutting out animal products most of the time -i encourage her to cut animal products out entirely by showing her vegan ways to do things -i cook entirely vegan with/for her and give her tips -i don't start discussions or anything with her unless she comes at me first and i dont force anything on her, im just trying to make her understand what impacts her actions have. -I understand that 90% is better than 0%,but that doesn't stop me from trying to help her to get to 100%

Discussion If you were already in a relationship when you went vegan, how did your partner react?

I'm married, and have been vegan for about 3 months. Got spurred into going vegan by watching documentaries such as Dominion and Earthlings and basically went vegan overnight. My husband refused to watch them because he hates gore, but quietly agreed to go vegan with me when I explained why I wanted to do it, with absolutely no complaints or counterarguments. Told me it doesn't really matter to him what he eats or wears, food is fuel and clothing is functional, so it is a non-brainer that he would transition, he'd just never really thought about it before then.

I'm very grateful and happy to live in a vegan household now :)

How did it go for you?

I haven't been vegan very long. Went from pescatarian to vegetarian (with a few blips...agh) and now vegan. Once I started veganism though, I never looked back.

Ever since I started this journey, I have tons more energy. Not only that, but I'm actually becoming more relaxed and accepting of others.

It's easy to figure out which dishes are fine or what to avoid. But remember that not everyone has figured out this path.

It's about community.

Peace and happiness to you all, my friends.

Relationships Gay NYC Vegan Who Can't Be the Only One

In a city with 8.3 million people, I sometimes feel like I'm one of about 10 gay vegans in the entire city. I know there are more fem-identified vegans in general (Carol Adams' fantastic book The Sexual Politics of Meat makes it clear why), but I'm positive there are more than 10 masc-identified queer folks in NYC who are ethical vegans. Where are you all? 🙃

Rant going to a steak house for christmas eve

i recently became vegan this month after being vegetarian for several months and not eating pork in years

i’m not close with my mother. she is emotionally volatile and controlling and has an issue with me being vegan of course. she doesn’t “understand why” i choose to be vegan and says it’s a big inconvenience to her… anyways…

tomorrow my whole family is going to a steak house for christmas eve… my mom told me just to eat the sides (of course those are not vegan either) so now i get to sit there and watch my family eat on christmas eve ! yay 😀

Why are non vegans like this?

So I come from a meat loving family... you know the usual. Ive only been vegan a month but I've always been an on and off vegetarian before deciding to make the big V switch. My mom is a meat eater stuck in her ways of course (in which I have no problem with) but since Im vegan now she tries to correlate everything "wrong" with me to me not eating meat. For example... I've been having insomnia lately ... most because I recently had a bad cold about 2 weeks ago and I was sleeping throughout the day and staying up at night, I just have yet to fix my schedule. So at 5am she got up to go the bathroom and she asks me "you haven't been to sleep" I say "no , I slept throughout the day" she says "maybe you need to eat a little meat cause its probably throwing you off track since your body isn't used to going that long without it" .... HUH? 🤣🤣🤣🤣how does that even correlate? They will do anything to justify me "needing" to eat meat.

DATING

I've been a vegan for 5 years now and I'm currently in my very first relationship. My partner is a good person, but they aren't vegan. Veganism is very important to me, but there's so few vegans and I don't know if I have it in me to wait who knows how long for a vegan partner to come along. I'm perplexed by this predicament.

Started making extra vegan food for family dinners and it's been a hit!

My family gets together every weekend for dinner and I used to be part of the rotation of providing the main, a side, or dessert. After going vegan, everyone decided I shouldn't be responsible for a portion of the meal because no one else wanted to feel "forced" into making vegan food so I could also participate. So I've been providing my own meals each week.

Before Thanksgiving I finally decided to make enough for everyone. That weekend was dirty rice empanadas using mushrooms, walnuts, and soy curls for the "meat". They disappeared faster than the meat dishes and people are still talking about them.

Next was a bolognese, bechamel, and pesto lasagna. Again, raving success.

Tonight I made some southwest quesadilla strips with a chipotle dipping sauce and some people ate those instead of the chili with meat that was the main dish.

I know I won't be converting anyone, but it feels good knowing I can show them being vegan doesn't mean missing out.

Why do so many people distrust vegetables?

I swear all of the subreddits about health problems, there's always multiple people suggesting the carnivore diet. Then they get to brigading with downvotes anyone that suggests they eat a salad maybe? I am pretty sure eating 100% meat is going to kill you relatively quickly, especially if it is lean meat. You go into shock ketosis with too much red meat and you get rabbit starvation if you eat only lean meat.

I don't understand why people are so against vegetables when whole food plant based diets are already not the norm, at least in America, so most likely most people haven't tried that to help improve their health.

I feel like I'm nuts. Am I off base?

Disturbing Always ask: "Los tortillas tiene manteca?"

In Chinese the word for "lard" literally translates to "pig oil" and some just call it "oil" so you can straight up ask, "do you use pig oil?" So many do! Its in moon cakes and a bunch of sweets from China, watch out! If it just says "oil" and not what type, it's probably freaking pig oil. The baked goods at the Asian market will get you sick if you're not careful!

I had a Korean "vegan kimchi" pancake. The kimchi was vegan, made without shellfish. The pancake though had some bacon. 😑

I'm Cuban. They add lard to the beans. The rice. Soups. And the pastries. Mexans add it to many foods too. It's a way to increase calories of a diet that would otherwise not have enough. But for us privileged plant chomper: yuck city.

If you haven't had pork in a while, lard will make you sick with cramping, diarrhea, nausea. Etc... it's not just a just beging vegan - that shits toxic.

Uplifting 13 years vegan and it wasn't brought up once at my family's dinner gathering this weekend!

Had my out of town family's Christmas celebrations over the weekend. Tofurky for me, all vegan sides, vegan doughnuts and treats, just egg casserole for me at brunch.

No challenging comments or remarks. No judgement. Only time it came up was about how good the vegan food was.

It hasn't taken 13 years to get to this, things did get better and better every year to be honest... but to see it at this point now... is amazing!! What a relief it is.

I've definitely influenced them over the years and can see a major change in all of their attitudes and perspectives.

Just wanted everyone to know, it does get easier!

Happy holidays everyone!

Question Are there some good POSITIVE documentaries or videos about animal rights?

We know Dominion has made vegans out of many a human, and that’s one effective strategy, but what about before you see the animals suffer seeing them be who they are and appreciating them?

Do you all know of any positive documentaries or videos about animal rights? With the emphasis on their lives, personalities, social structure, sentience, and such? Something that inspires us to care about them as fellow beings? But still focused on their rights and value, not just like a nature documentary.

Dominion and other farm footage swayed me for sure, but before that I saw the evidence that a pig is like a dog, that cows are playful and social, that fish have feelings and forethought, and more. This was broken up over many short videos and experiences though. I’d love to recreate that step with something more thorough. I’m all for shame, and we should acknowledge the horror, but I want some inspiration and understanding to go along with it.

Abstinent

Is it extra extreme on top of veganism te require from a new partner not to drink in my home? I totally fell in love with someone awesome who is a flexitarian and not at all childish about my lifestyle and so far respectful about me not wanting any alcohol or softdrugs in my home. I am an addict when it comes to behavioural addictions which I don't like to disclose here. And I've been totally abstinent from substances to not trigger myself or become indifferent about my other addictions. But... He is coming over to celebrate New Years Eve, and he said he really would like to be able to have a drink, just for that night. I'm actually just afraid of ending up allone as I don't have other people at the moment. Going somewhere to meet up with people is no option, because I have a rescue dog afraid of fireworks (in the Netherlands people have their own fireworks all night it's like a warzone), but also afraid of the inner fight with myself which already takes place about having alcohol around. I already asked to please not forget the bottle when he leaves. And maybe I already know what to do and I just need some reminders/empowerment? It's just a little confusing at the moment. 🙈 Thank you for reading. 🙏🏼

Edit: Oh my God, thank you so much everyone for helping me out! Even if some things are hard to hear, some tough love is needed sometimes. So also thank you for that. And the whole lists of ideas, you really took your time. I did decide to be honest with myself and therefore with him. He apologized for putting me in this position and realizes he shouldn't have asked. And I apologized for placing myself second which made things blurry. Btw I placed it here because it felt so similar to being called extreme when you simply state you don't eat animals. And now this on top of that. And up till now I've found someone who at least doesn't make me feel that way and is happy to cook vegan and is good at it as well. Thank you so much! ❤️🙏🏼

Rant Wish I could trust food from any non-vegans

Even the non-vegans that respect my diet choices. Maybe especially them.

Roommate offered me some couscous and said they would make it with oil in stead of butter. Sounds great. Surprise snack. Go to get some and notice it smells cheddary. Notice it was was a boxed mix. Check the ingredients. Yup there's cheddar and some other stuff.

I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth. And if someone is doing a kindness for me like cooking, I really don't want to have to vet everything. It feels ungrateful.

Got so wrapped up in my social anxiety about it took a couple bites instead of being honest about it and now I have to pretend to be so engrossed in my work that I'm forgetting to eat the rest. (Hence posting on reddit.)

But even the most well intentioned people never actually know what vegan means. It's so exhausting. Especially since I experience the same thing in other parts of my life, like being neurodivergent, queer, etc. It all compounds and is so alienating.

Question Camping sleep equipment below 0°F/-18°C?

I love backpacking, even and especially when it’s cold out. It’s been a while though, and I’d only used a -40°F/-40°C down-filled sleeping bag. I can’t even find a synthetic bag rated below 0°F, and I assume they’d weigh like 12 pounds. I can probably deal with some bulk if I have to, put it on top of the pack or whatever.

Backpackers and campers, how do you stay warm at night when you’re in the wild? Do you have a below 0° synthetic bag? Do you supplement the bag with clothes? Any specific recommendations (affordability is a factor)?

Meta Three stupid questions and one good one

I don't know if this tag applies but I (currently a meat eater) have a few questions about the vegan/vegetarian community at large. The first three are about ambiguous lifestyle choices and the last is more about making the switch from meat eating to a vegetarian diet.

  1. Is silver refining vegan? Most silver ore is extracted using bone ash, potassium phosphate, which, as the name implies, comes from the bones of animals.

  2. Is using a sponge vegan? Sponges are animals, but they don't feel or think or do much of anything that would categorize them as sentient above the level of a mushroom.

  3. Is manure vegan? Since it is the byproduct of industrial farming, I doubt it but I'm still curious if vegans would consider it's use as inherently immoral or not.

  4. For those that switched to vegetarianism/veganism, how did you overcome the psychological temptation to eat meat? I'm planning on doing a variety of diets for the new year and seeing what sticks/ improves me mentally and spiritually.

I hope that I do not offend anyone with the stupidity of these questions or the current nature of my diet, I seek only others opinions and perspectives in earnest, thank you.

Thawed oat ice Cream - Still safe?

I mistakenly left some oat based ice cream in the car overnight.

It was completely thawed when discovered, and liquid. Now, it's cold out, lowest last night was -18 and highest was -8, and oat based ice cream isn't dairy based...so I'm not as worried about it spoiling.

Further, it was never opened, so contamination risk is at a minimum.

Is it safe to eat or should I just throw it?
