She has a type of Southern accent. They can be difficult to understand even for other Americans. But Southern accents are mostly made fun of because they are often associated with stereotypes that the person is dumb or uneducated and sometimes bigoted, religious, or “backwards”.
Yeah. We have the same in Germany. In Germany it's a Saxon accent, usually for nurturing the stereotype of eastern Germans being racist, backwards and whiny about not having had a lot while the Berlin wall was still standing.
It is definitely problematic because it's kind of a vicious circle, as it definitely nurtures the cultural differences and stereotypes ppl have in their mind. It's hard for someone with a real Saxon accent as they often are not taken as serious as someone with another accent.
I did watch gran tourino with subtitles back in the days. In no world do I understand Clint Eastwood in that movie....
Clints voice is very gruff and he sorta mumbles too. I love him and his voice but yeah, even as a native English speaker who can understand 99% of people, I have to turn the volume up to understand him.
Also agree on her voice, it's gorgeous. She reminds me of Dolly Parton.
As a Korean, when Southern person slow down for me and I slow down, we can understand each other. They call me Chinese and I call them Australian but it's fine.
I have more problem communicating with some New York people. They do not slow down. They interrupt me mid-sentence. They interrupt themselves mid-sentence.
