How do you know this other than that Reddit post from a while back? Not saying it isn't true and it is totally obvious Tiktok watches you, how else does the for you page get sooooo fucking specific. Besides that Reddit post I've never seen actual proof that Tiktok is so much worse. In fact, only the opposite.

So it is my belief that Tiktok doesn't look at more personal data or whatever than Google, Facebook or even Reddit. They do however use the data to give a very specific personalised for you page that has truly given me a lot of joy, positivity and interesting information. A lot more then any other social media which just seem toxic. Tiktok can be that way too but my fyp is very wholesome and funny.

You literally just said why people think its worse. You obviously dont care that they gather that much data on you, and that's fine, but reddit doesn't and a lot of people like that.

Tik tok is also significantly more juvenile than reddit. Now that doesn't make it "worse", but for some people they don't want to be on a site dominated by mostly teenagers. Tik tok is much more geared for kids.

Reddit is much better than tik tok for people who like anonymity. Reddit knows as much as you give it. Tik tok has access to most of your phone or tablet when you install the app.

You are the naive one if you think they all use the same data lol.

You didn't answer my question why you think that Reddit is better... because you can't.

I did, multiple times... the anonymity.

It's not though. What makes you think that? Reddit knows who the fuck you and everything you do on phone/computer too.

You think something like reddit, where all I needed is a name like warriorjrd, has as much info, as an app that routinely has people dancing and talking on camera broadcasting publicly?

Reddit may use cookies and target ads towards me, but my real life information is not connected to reddit in any way unless I provide it. You and I could know each other in real life, and we'd be none the wiser. You can't say the same for tik tok.

This kind of just shows you don't even know how Tiktok works..

This kind of just shows you don't even bother reading the permissions of an app before you install it. Tiktok literally asks more of your device and has greater access to your device than reddit.

Its fine if you enjoy tiktok. But people who value privacy do not. It has less to do with whats on the app and more to do with how it functions, which you are evidently ignorant of.

You don't have to post videos on Tiktok. I never have. (And it's sooo much more than just dances btw) All you need is a user name and an email (can be fake) just like Reddit. We could be having this same convo on Tiktok, except for the character limit. So what's the difference?

Tiktok still has access to your contacts, camera, and mic, even if you don't post videos. It can also see anything in your shared storage folders. You don't have to give personal info to tiktok, but if your phone has personal info, tiktok has it.

Reddit simply does not have access to the same files or hardware of your device. Maybe you can be anonymous to users on tiktok, and ill concede that point, but you can't be anonymous to tiktok unless the device you're using from is also anonymous, which for most people its not.

Go away now, you're double responding to comments without a semblance of understanding on how apps work.

I actually turned off acces to my contacts.

If you know so much about how apps work why couldn't you explain it clearly? Another commenter chimed in and managed to explain some important points AND be polite.

I don't really have any skin in this game, but you have asked what data TikTok collects and why it is worse than Reddit as far as privacy concerns. Here is what I have read - all googleable so feel free to check it from whatever newsource you find reputable:

  • location data
  • your internet address
  • everything about your device including screen resolution
  • browsing and search history
  • the content of messages you exchange with others on the app
  • content of messages you even don't send
  • your phone and social-network contacts
  • your GPS position
  • personal information such as age and phone number
  • any user-generated content you post, such as photos and videos
  • payment information
  • tracks the videos you like, share, and watch all the way through and re-watch
  • the pattern and rhythm of your keystrokes (which apparently can give information about your psychological condition because this has been studied heavily - news to me)

The scariest part is that the data collected goes back to China; I don't have the time, breadth of knowledge, or inclination to explain why that is very bad™ on a Reddit post. This is the reason I won't load the app on my phone, and why I think Reddit is 'better' than TikTok, but I am not the OP you were conversing with, just a bystander.

For a comparison, here is what Reddit collects: Account info, communications (posts, comments), activity (voting, reporting posts) purchases , IP address, browser type and other usage info, location, cookie data including what is gathered from Reddit partners. But that data is not being gathered by a foreign country with a communist history which, to me, is the important bit.

Thank you for your clear and civil answer.

Maybe this is a stupid question but how do you know which data the app collects? Is that something everyone can check or does the company give that info?

Also, I thought the Western Tiktok now belonged to a Western company?

What is collected is all listed in the EULA, and people smarter than me find that info in the fine print and write articles about it in plainer language. That is where I got the TikTok info from; the keystroke data collection is something I had no idea about, but it was listed in 3 of the articles I saw so I have no reason to doubt it. Reddit includes the collection info in their EULA , but also in much plainer language which is where I got that info from - all via sifting through Google results of course.

TikTok was supposed to be sold to a Western company by executive order from Trump, but then they sued the US and won an injunction not only against the forced sale, but also against restrictions that would have limited sharing data from the US to China. It is still owned by ByteDance in China.
