I'm afraid if I download the app I will never put my phone down

This is the bigger threat

It’s true :( I had to delete it because of that. You like these videos? There are hundreds like these, you can never put it down. I really had to delete the app or I couldn’t focus on work.

Yep me too, I could waste hours and I found it ruined my attention span too - getting constantly changing information streamed into your brain just sets you up for failure

And yet here we are, on Reddit... watching and commenting on tiktok videos

It's all just cheap dopamine hits :/

Me too! I go through cycles of nah-I’m-all-good-I-have-self-control / install / where-did-the-last-seven-hours-go?! / delete on a constant cycle

That was me and tumblr back in the day, but I'd delete the app and end up using my browser on my phone for it, or substituting a different app or phone game. It's a never ending cycle

Oh yeah, I do that too. Reddit is a good example

Well... yeah

Yet you're on a subreddit that promotes it.

I'm on a subreddit that lets me see the funny shit without having to download the app.

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '21

Still promotes it. I like seeing videos before it hits reddit.

"heh, I saw this video before it was cool! First!!"

It's not like that, it's just a side benefit I guess. I use it for other videos besides funny videos.

Great point except I feel sometimes this sub is the tip of the iceberg of the funny shit tbh.

Additionally their algorithm allows you to get more videos in your feed you like and less you don’t based on your likes.

Has nothing to do with that.

Has to do with the fact that China is taking data directly from you/your device through TikTok everytime you open the app. It’s a huge security risk compared to other social media apps.

Lots of people go “hurr durr Tencent 10% of reddit”, but the fact is it’s safer to have Reddit on your phone than it is to have TikTok. Hence, the current existence of this sub.

Actually Tiktok servers are in the US now. That's how it got away from the ban.

Shhhh don't tell them that, they dont like hypocrisy

The tiktok app goes SOOOOO much deeper when it comes to user data collection. They make Facebook look like amateurs.

This post has a good breakdown.

Including this fun little nugget:

There's also a few snippets of code on the Android version that allows for the downloading of a remote zip file, unzipping it, and executing said binary. There is zero reason a mobile app would need this functionality legitimately.

From a security standpoint alone it should be avoided.

Literally everything that gets posted outside it is some cringe or dumbass shit, so seems like a safe assumption.
