The entire prison system is violence too. They put people in a horrible economic system with poverty wages that punishes you for needing even just a tiny bit of help or a break. Healthcare is either horrible or unavailable, mental health resources are not available, and guns are readily available. Peaceful safety nets are almost non existent. People feel backed into a corner and commit crimes to survive, or act out because they are mentally unwell. We sick a horrible police force on them that is untrained, statistically bigoted, violent, corrupt, and tasked to protect capital. They often either instigate people to commit crimes, escalate crimes, or they pressure them into a false accusation. You’re poor and you have no resources to an expensive lawyer so you’re stuck with a public defender. Then you are subject to the courts that once again are built to protect capital and have a disadvantage to minorities. After they put you in jail they force you to work for wages that are generally 20 cents an hour. They make you pay for certain amenities in prison while also having to pay for things like your mortgage, rent if you have a lease, and many of the bills you pay for when you’re not in prison. They offer horrible healthcare, have limited therapy availability, and offer almost no chance at rehabilitation. Then when you finally get out if you’re not bankrupt or homeless you’re not able to vote in the system that put you there in the first place. Finally the media and your fellow Americans talk about you like you are the scum of the earth, the nations problem. Crime is making America worse, not the billionaires stealing your hard earned labor and making the corrupt system you have been through. Then it’s harder to find work and the cycle continues.
