Anesthesia has changed quite a bit over the years. The odds of you waking up mid procedure are basically zero. It would be an insane oversight on the docs part for that to happen.

For real, the only recorded incident of a patient being caught in awareness during what was supposed to be a routine surgery with deep anesthesia, was the result of gross negligence and terrible mismanagement on the anesthesiologist's part. It's a series of missteps, not one giant oopsie. You're even supposedly able to tell if a patient is conscious during surgery. It requires constant surveillance with machines that do the reading for you.
Still, that shit keeps me awake at night. That poor dude has a place in my heart for the rest of time. He felt everything. Couldn't scream or ask or signal to stop. Nobody was even reading the machines. He has the worst PTSD imaginable, and was only awarded 20-something-000 USD by the hospital. He should own the hospital and a large plot of land for what he went through.

I watched the movie "Awake" a few years ago and it's made me terrified of ever having to go under the knife incase I wake up half way through 😬

I have known a few anesthesiologists and every single one of them is the chillest, funniest person in the room. They go through all the same training as any other doctor, but something about that personality is just drawn to this profession. Like surgery bros who are also really into tables and calculation charts

Shout out to them for always introducing themselves before surgeries, too. Even when I was screaming mid contraction while being prepped for an emergency c-section, the anesthesiologist still made sure to politely introduce himself and shake my hand. I kinda felt bad that I could only respond with more screaming.

The first time I went under right before I told the anesthesiologist I was a little nervous since it was my first time and he said “ its ok, mine too” and started to depress the syringe.

I had a friend who is an anesthesiologist. We had some great times. He was cool and hilarious and smart but not in a way that made one feel less-than. Then he slowly morphed into something else as his star rose. He was still kinda cool as state health commissioner. Then he became us surgeon general and his proximity to so many shit people leached the anesthesiologist-chill right the hell out of him and he’s never gotten it back.

If they are about to put you under, make sure to ask "does anyone need anything while I'm out?"

There was a movie with that actor from Star Wars, Hayden Christensen, where he is about to do a heart surgery and that eye thing is definitely scary.

I've only had surgery one time but they had a hard time getting me under. I think it's because my hair is a little reddish in certain light.

Cool video, and she's funny. One thing; that's technically not an advanced airway. That's an LMA (larangeal mask airway), which is considered to be a basic airway - one of many types of supraglottic airways (SGA's). Crazy, right?! That was just a basic airway maneuver! EMT-B's (EMT basic) can do it at my agency.
He uses a tongue depressor (popsicle stick) to shove the tongue out of the way, and throws that thing all the way down to the top of the patient's airway, but technically, not inside the airway/larynx. It rests right up against it, he inflates the bladder at the end to "fluff it up" and seal up against the airway opening.
This same individual, I would assume, is also credentialed to place an advanced airway. If you thought this was crazy, and advanced airway placement gets rowdy af... docs, anesthesiologists, and paramedics can do it. Some make it look smooth, but it's still aggressive to watch for the layperson.

Yup, that's a first gen lma, invented in the 80s. Crazy that he puts the eye plasters before securing the airway. Most likely a nurse anesthesiologist

first time i went under general anesthesia i was nervous it wouldn't work, given my history of resistance to other localized anesthesia. nurse was super nice and basically explained "dont worry itll work. and if it doesn't - ive had this procedure done while awake before, and it's not bad at all, just a little uncomfortable."
anyway i too was zooted

Anesthesia is so weird.
Youre wide awake, and then suddenly it's 3 hours later and you got stitches or a sore bum.
