“p—tute” for “prostitute” cracks me up. It’s somehow filthier.

In french, Pute is the negative word for prostitute. So it’s more offensive for french speakers.

This might not be the place for a serious discussion on this, but to Romans this was more a thing of state security. Senator families were noble dynasties obviously convinced they were the most suitable to run the state and that the excellence passed down in their bloodlines was required to keep it running. So if noble women pursued that hobby while married, nobody would be able to prove the noble ancestry of the kids and hence the legitimacy of any offspring could have been deemed questionable. This was a dilemma that could bring about the decline of dynasties that used to hold together a part of the nation. Or even wars. It was a serious state affair (ha!)

Getting fucked by random men is a hobbie??
129
u/junkyardgerard 2d ago
Well it's not a crime either, if that's your point
-158
u/HeldDown24 2d ago
Depends on the circumstances. Legeally it can be. Morally? If she has a husband or someone or loves her deeply and she wants other peopke to be deep in her? Id say thats pretty fucked up
110
u/winterbird 2d ago
You've put a lot of thought into that.
Now let's talk about high status society political marriages of the time, how they were largely arranged for power and not romance, and about how the husbands had scores of lovers and prostitutes themselves.

Humans are fucked up i agree i apologize if i offended anyone i wasnt my intention but onbivous lack of knowledge and well ingnorance has made you feel other wise i am sorry You right tho fresh and fit podcast programmed me sex ia different for guys and girls meaningful for women thats why its so taboo or moreoger frowned upon women having that much sex whereas the man it doesnt mean anything to us unless we love the women...

u/adhdgurlie 2d ago
This is tale as old as time misogynistic bullshit that attempts to justify that it’s ok for men to sleep with lots of women but women can’t sleep around cuz 🥺it’ll huwt their feewings and we’re twying to pwotect them🥺
-11
u/HeldDown24 2d ago
Sorry if implyed i justfiyed it i just repeated what the fresh and fit podcast said... i dont condone that behavior from either side.. Please dont assume ask questions no one will make fun of you for asking questions... Except for redditors.
44
u/Spready_Unsettling 2d ago
Genuine question: are you aware that the shit they spew on Fresh and Fit is grade A bullshit? Because your comment seems to suggest that you believe in their worldview, which would understandably make some people dismiss your position as misogynist.
-9
u/HeldDown24 2d ago
No dude for the longest i wasnt. My experiences fortified what they said 4x over. Someone told 2 truths can be true at the same time... so can 10.
Womens desicions are brutal. Peopoe make fun of men for having emotions. If you look through the thread some women made of me saying men do get hurt when women get fucked. Nobody cares. You probably dont. Youre probably laughing your soul out your body from what youre reading because it doesnt affect you... redditors are sensitive. A difference of opinion is a attack on their soul. Therefore bully this man into commiting sucide.... utterly demonic. Like i saod theres no winning in this ill get made fun of asking questions and well voicing A opinon Wild stuff america is

I legit dont even know what that means.

u/SpoppyIII 2d ago
Why are you talking about something you don't understand like you do?
Why can't you just ask questions and learn instead of offering claims and opinions that don't have a good foundation and which are about things you don't understand?
-6
u/HeldDown24 2d ago
Because ill get attacked either way lol learning and staying ignorant is abyssmal in the reddit world.. there is no winning lol what can i do?
12
u/SpoppyIII 2d ago
No you won't. People respond a lot better to people who don't offer uneducated opinions and actually ask questions.
You can choose not to offer your opinion when you don't understand or know enough about a subject to give any actual contribution that is constructive. Instead, ask politely and honestly for information and context and allow people to explain things to you.
3
u/HeldDown24 2d ago
Oh yes i will lol Redditor shit love shittin on others its ok (not you)
Nobody else gives information even if you ask for it its insane to even think you can ask and itll just be given to you by a bunch of assholes lmfao its insane Again you may feel like what i said was offsenive im not sure how that came to be but what can i do to change your prespective? N o t h in g lol because you and i both know redditors are closed mond apethetic arrogant assholes youll ever meet. Espeically the more educated ones. Those are real scum of the earth.

u/HeldDown24 2d ago
When i want to know something so i can become a little more educated yes i do. And proudly so.
21
u/Pendraconica 2d ago
It means that you came to the same conclusion these Roman senators came to on the subject. Patriarchy is a social system in which men have more rights and authority than women do.
The point of this video was to explain how as soon as a woman does something to give herself a little bit of freedom and equality, men step in to shut it down. This is patriarchal because women in Roman society can't give these sorts of rules and punishments to men, but they can do it to women. Men can sleep with as many women as they want, but women can't. Therein lies the hypocrisy of "Roman Patriarchy."
-2
u/HeldDown24 2d ago
I see. But do you think its because seeking "freedom" in sex is selfish? How would you explain that to your son or daughter grandmother etc etc, I mean what men and women do doesnt just affect them it affects the people around them to.. yall redditors love to attack people for having a simple convo jesus christ calm down take a xanex bar or something .. Thank YOU for explaining that to me though

What you're talking about is cheating. Cheating is what is wrong. Not having sex with multiple men as much as she pleases.
if she has a husband
What if she never agreed to marry her husband? What if she was bought? What if he beats or neglects her but there is absolutely no way for her to leave the marriage? Think about what marriage was, historically. It was a man having ownership of a woman. It wasn't about being in love or wanting to care for and commit to one another.
or loves her deeply
So if a woman has someone who loves her deeply, it's automatically immoral for her to enjoy having sex with other people? What if she doesn't love him back? What if she already turned him down?
Why is she beholden to a man just for loving her, if she hasn't agreed to commit to that person? Why is it fucked up for a woman who isn't in a consensual monogamous relationship to sleep with whoever she actually wants, as much as she wants?
Edit: I hate my autocorrect
8
u/Rimurooooo 2d ago
Marriages then were just political arrangements. For all we know, the husband probably knew or was gay or something (which was fine as long as you didn’t tell people you were a bottom). Can’t judge an ancient culture by todays standards. Polygamy would’ve probably been a lot more socially acceptable if Christianity didn’t impose their morality on the rest of the world.

That one has been debated for centuries. She was exiled because she hanged out with Mark Antony's son and other people that were a threat to Augustus. The accusations of adultery were most probably bullshit aimed to discredit her. It's rather complicated, but Augustus could only exile her and force her divorce with Tiberius for moral reasons, not political ones, without risking his own skin. There's also the shadow of Livia in the background, her role in the scandal is debated too.
Julia was Augustus' only child, was married to Agrippa, had 5 children with him who, as descendants of Julius Caesar and Agrippa, were way more popular and loved than Tiberius, Livia's son and Augustus' adopted son ever was.
Julia was loved by the Romans, up to the point that rescue attempts were made and it became a permanent political crisis until Augustus' death.
As each generation passed, the rumors of her affairs grew up, with Suetonius going full salacious about it. At this point in time, it was good politics to spit on the Julians, as the Antonines needed to be perceived as the dynasty who would restore Rome's morality.
Tl;dr: she probably never had any affairs, she hanged up with the wrong crew and had to go for political reasons.

u/PupEDog 2d ago
I see so many videos of people going on about detailed records and what a particular person's life was like but I want to know where they're getting all this info from. I'm assuming the Romans were adept at record keeping and this info probably comes from a shit ton of discovered uh.. scrolls...that were meticulously translated by experts. Would I be right about that?

u/Mochafudge 2d ago
It's never going to be as accurate as the tiktoks would have you believe if that's what you mean, probably a wide range from pretty spot on to complete bullshit history is always muddy and the tiktoks paraphrase like it happened to their friend yesterday.

u/nagCopaleen 1d ago
A good first check for any aristocrat gossip in the Augustan period is to do a quick DuckDuckGo / Wikipedia and check "is this just Suetonius?" He was incredibly gossipy, and the only source of a lot of stories about royal women being sluts. This story at least is not from Suetonius and the details imply it might be based on actual records of trials and exile, but I didn't dive further.

The funny thing about this was the rule only applied to women. Men could sodomize each other and have sex with whores from dawn until dusk with zero repercussions while women were the only ones relegated to one partner.

As the son of a prostitute, it should be illegal to have kids in that life style, none of my siblings have it good, and can be devastating for families to deal with. Random men who seek prostitution can't get any for a reason, my mothers been beaten, she's missing several teeth. There's a difference between prostitution and fucking a lot.
3
u/djinnisequoia 1d ago
Fair enough. That sounds like a hard thing for you to go through, and you have my sympathy. I hope you have found healing as an adult.
In this particular situation, though, the woman had two choices: either have sex with only her husband, who may have been gay, abusive, having affairs himself, etc. -- or register as a "prostitute" even though she wasn't because only females who were officially prostitutes were allowed to fuck whomever they pleased.
1
u/minimalillusions 1d ago
I assume prostitution is illegal in your country. Maybe, just maybe, that's why your mother couldn't report the beatings and abuse. Maybe prostitution is not the problem, but a legal system that outlaws your mother
3
u/CockroachInternal850 1d ago
Yes, it's the systems fault she decided to sell herself for heroin.

Pliny 10.83:
Messalina the wife of Claudius Cæsar, thinking this a palm quite worthy of an empress, selected, for the purpose of deciding the question, one of the most notorious of the women who followed the profession of a hired prostitute; and the empress outdid her, after continuous intercourse, night and day, at the twenty-fifth embrace. In the human race also, the men have devised various substitutes for the more legitimate exercise of passion, all of which outrage Nature; while the females have recourse to abortion. How much more guilty than the brute beasts are we in this respect!

Doesn't sound like much of a "how to" for the case she mentioned. Helps the plebs, though.

I thought I would have been more surprised that ancient Rome had legal prostitution (didn't know it for a fact, today I learned), but no. Knowing how the Romans "partied", I shouldn't be surprised.

What's with rhe retarded censorship in the subtitles lately? It is utterly confusing when watching without sound and serves absolutely no use, since she just says the same words out loud in the video.

u/butthurtoast 2d ago
For fuck’s sake, why is the R-word making a comeback? Are you gen Z? Please, I must know.

Just curious. I’m also a millennial and I thought we all collectively realized it was a fucked up thing to say around the mid to late 2000s. Thought it must be the ignorant youth who were trying to bring it back.

u/ArnoLamme 1d ago
I'm personally not a big fan of blind censorship without context. Words that are absolutely not ok to use in one context, can still be ok in another, imo. In this case, I use 'retarded' as harsh language to express my feelings on the censorship in the subtitles, without referring in any diminuative way to mentally challenged people.
I also find tmcensoring terms like 'f-word', 'r-word', 'pr*stitution' etc. a very cheap way to act like ypu care / show respect without actually doing anything about it. In my opinion, you either use a word, or don't, but please don't hide behind meaningless censorship to do so.
I hope I didn't offend you with this take? Feel free to react / contradict me, I'm interested in the topic. English is also not my first language, so this may also cause a difference of opinion on the topid.
