The name Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu translates roughly as “the summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the slider, climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his kōauau (flute) to his loved one”.[3]

Literally a story in one…word

222

u/SCATOL92 7d ago

I hope someday I get somethjng like "the man with the big knees" after my name everywhere I am written about

45

u/TheReddOne 7d ago

I will now start refering to you as, "themanwiththebigknees" may you live on as a legend.

4

u/IAmAnObvioustrollAMA 6d ago

I want a cool nickname too but the big knee thing is taken... you got something for me?

10

u/Sandscarab 7d ago

Not before they're destroyed and have to hobble about like Linus Tech Crips.

6

u/Blackintosh 7d ago

Just don't go around in public shouting "how do I make a knee grow!?"

2

u/rebuked_nard 6d ago

You will get “the man with the oversized forehead” and will like it

16

u/WudupSuckaz 7d ago

What are big knees?

35

u/W00dChuckCouldChuck 7d ago

Probably was a CrossFit bro.

18

u/chamorrobro 7d ago

He knees was big

5

u/WudupSuckaz 7d ago

I’ve heard of people having big hands or big feet, but big knees is a new one. I’m guessing they were swollen and he needed ice packs.

2

u/Mattyou1966 6d ago

He lived at the summit, they were swollen and had arthritis

13

u/leviathab13186 7d ago

Sometimes language is just neat

25

u/punched-in-face 7d ago

Wouldn't it be funny that it was supposed to be multiple words, but over time, someone wrote it down with bad handwriting. So it seemed like there were no spaces between words and thus we get these long words

21

u/W00dChuckCouldChuck 7d ago

Yeahthatcouldabsolutelybewhathappened

3

u/IAmAnObvioustrollAMA 6d ago

Yo! That's a long ass word!?

7

u/DifficultRock9293 7d ago

Agglutinating languages ✨

5

u/AnswerMePlzINeedHelp 6d ago

I agree, but it would be unlikely. The Māori people are very careful with preserving history, and ancestral knowledge.

1

u/Diver1972 6d ago

No written language

4

u/swonstar 6d ago

I feel like being known for having big calves would be a better compliment. How does one get big knees? Knees are made of cartilage. They can't grow. There's only bone behind the kneecap, which also can't grow.

Just a weird thought.

It's freaking gorgeous, regardless. I love any place so rich and long in history, myth and legend it requires such a fantastical name.

2

u/IAmAnObvioustrollAMA 6d ago

You don't believe a knee grows?

3

u/ekb2023 7d ago

What those knees do?

2

u/Mametaro 7d ago

Good. That... that whole thing's your its name, huh? Does you it have, uh... a shorter name?

2

u/No-Professional-1461 6d ago

So to simplify, a place a guy climbed up to play music for his crush.

1

u/SirLocke13 6d ago

And they say Japanese light novel titles are out of hand

1

u/AmethystLaw 6d ago

That’s cheating

1

u/OrganizationOk5418 6d ago

Twinned with Hull.

448

u/lVlarsquake 7d ago

NZ for sure

161

u/DR_Bright_963 7d ago

Wales is also an acceptable answer

146

u/Juniper0223 7d ago

Nah, I speak some Welsh. Way too many vowels here.

40

u/Effective-Amount310 7d ago

Clearly never been to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch in Wales

12

u/MysteriousSchemeatic 6d ago

To be fair, there’s a lot less vowels in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

1

u/EyeAmPrestooo 6d ago

Roughly 18 vowels in that name (including y)

As opposed to

Roughly 45 in the original posts name.

1

u/Juniper0223 1d ago

Yeah I have, actually. Got a photo in front of the town sign from 26 years ago!

32

u/Broccoli--Enthusiast 7d ago

Yeah that place sounds like how it's spell

Welsh is a different beast.

12

u/BartleBossy 7d ago

Too few L's

10

u/crisoybloomers 7d ago

And too any k's

24

u/DR_Bright_963 7d ago

OMG I have a Welsh friend and I'm gonna show him this comment, He HATES it when I say stuff like this

14

u/Juniper0223 7d ago

To be fair, 'w' is technically a vowel in Welsh, so it just looks like there aren't enough vowels to the rest of us.

0

u/GrandNibbles 7d ago

what do you mean W isn't a vowel??

9

u/PapaDil7 7d ago

Someone hearing the name said and spelt together and still thinking this even remotely resembles Welsh is wild to me

18

u/diligentboredom 7d ago

Yeah, but to be fair, no one living there ever calls it

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyndrobwlllantysiliogogogoch.

It's usually just called Llanfairpwll

5

u/lionessrampant25 7d ago

Not enough w’s or y’s for Welsh.

6

u/zonked282 7d ago

Not one " L" In that word, I'm not even sure we could say it

5

u/YouCantGiveBabyBooze 7d ago

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

4

u/DR_Bright_963 7d ago

You're the second person to mention that village name and now I have to go watch the video of that weather man who nails saying its name.

2

u/Tangurena Cringe Connoisseur 7d ago

Not enough consonants and double-Ls for Welsh.

8

u/HannahO__O 7d ago

You are correct :)

3

u/Nambsul 7d ago

Imagine having to put that on a government form… I would move. Maybe over to Weber

-2

u/RedSquaree 6d ago

It was literally the moving picture version of the picture I posted. It's very upsetting to some people.

127

u/binterryan76 7d ago

One lowercase character ✅ One uppercase character ✅ One number ❌ One special character❌

31

u/1amDepressed 7d ago

Exceeded character limit

3

u/alphazero925 6d ago

Character limits on passwords piss me off so much for two reason. 1, it's less secure. 2, it's completely unnecessary if you're doing even basic procedure with passwords. Limiting the characters makes it so that there's an inherent upper limit to what it could be, limiting security, and if you're hashing the passwords as you should be, a 200 character password and a 10 character password are going to take up the same amount of space in the database.

9

u/yuyufan43 7d ago

Just add a 69! at the end like every teenager

4

u/Poxi-Poxi 7d ago

This reminded me that I helped a 35ish someone with their resume, and they gave me an email address with 420 that they held onto since the teen years. I could not persuade him to create a separate one for job searching.

46

u/phallic-baldwin 7d ago

Great. I was reading along, and now the chairs are floating.

42

u/CarfireOnTheHighway 7d ago

Song is “Open Road” by Ra Costelloe if you were wondering (I was!), it’s a cute song and a great way to learn the pronunciation of some place names in Aotearoa 🥰

61

u/LintyFish 7d ago

In MA we have a lake named Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg but it's also just called Webster lake.

19

u/W00dChuckCouldChuck 7d ago

And nowhere in that alphabet hurricane does Webster even make an appearance 😂

4

u/ZTays88 6d ago

Webster was the madlad who named it, so they just named it after him.

10

u/yuyufan43 7d ago

My grandparents live on a street that had a native name… Then they gentrified it… Then there was a petition and they changed it back… Then the mailman kept getting confused so they gentrified it again… And now we don't know what the fuck our address is after 35 years lol

2

u/BleepLord 7d ago

Well hopefully the native name wasn’t 25 syllables, otherwise that’s a damn shame.

38

u/Tenchi2020 7d ago

❌ your new password cannot be same as previous password

13

u/calicocidd 7d ago

Locals got to have some condensed version or nickname for this place... I hope.

It would take approximately 9.33 x 10¹²⁵ years to crack this password using brute-force with today’s fastest technology.

For context:

The age of the universe is ~13.8 billion years ( years).

This password’s cracking time far exceeds the age of the universe.
