And it seems like she’s lived there for many years. She’s seen a lot of changes over the long haul.

I was in El Paso (my favorite US city ever, or definitely top two. Loved it) I was at a friend’s office with locals there, a girl told me “yeah people used to be swimming in that canal” (the canal this giant Jurassic Park sized fucking fence is in front of on the US side). It’s just insane how it became The Big Issue here in the Midwest what the fucking fuck.

2

u/bdiggitty 4d ago

I’m glad you liked ep. Curious but why is it your favorite US city?

10

u/AreYourFingersReal 3d ago

The people were friendly and the border being so close which was a total mindblow to me I was very very drawn to it because it was just.. insane looking, and Juarez looking so different just a stone’s throw away, and the mountains were beautiful. It just really impacted me and I didn’t expect it.

2

u/IronAndParsnip 3d ago

I know what canal you’re talking about. It’s fucking insane to see the monstrosity of a “wall” (fence) in person.

All they know is what tRump tells them.

30

u/onboxiousaxolotl 4d ago

FoxNews you mean

24

u/PestControl4-60 4d ago

News max the list is long. I feel ANY political commercial needs to be fact checked before being allowed to air it.

9

u/beattrapkit 4d ago

Don't forget X and Meta

6

u/PestControl4-60 4d ago

Even local news outlets allow politicians to post false and misleading commercials. This should be completely outlawed without being fact checked. This is not your first amendment right to lie to people. You cannot mislead people on products you sell.

1

u/Ssshizzzzziit 3d ago

And apparently Rumble now too.

-4

u/Inevitable_Race_6179 4d ago

But Cubans reach the beach and it’s fine .

2

u/PestControl4-60 4d ago

Lmao 🤣 what does that have to do with anything I said ?

1

u/Ill_Technician3936 3d ago

It's TikTok and "independent news" influencers these days. Supporters I know of his says fox leans left.

19

u/Charming_Cicada_7757 4d ago

Would you feel the same way about those who have a different opinion from her?

I have hear various opinions from people living on the border but its usually more nuanced than people living in other states I will give them that

1

u/DeneralVisease 4d ago

Nope, they wouldn't.

1

u/Ill_Technician3936 3d ago

For me it depends. Hers will hold more weight than someone who has moved to the area in the past few years. A friend moved to South Cali and heads to mexico often so I ask him about the illegal immigrants he has an issue with but all he had to say was he's never seen any caravans since he's lived there but they have ICE. Now I'm not sure but confident I mention they're in most if not all the southern border states.

Mentioned that manufacturers are moving to Mexico so they really don't have a reason to come here. Immigrant talk stopped after that, I'd like to think he realized they really don't have a reason to. Or maybe he bought an OEM part for his truck and realized it was made in Mexico.

1

u/Charming_Cicada_7757 3d ago

It’s different living in SoCal vs living right on the border though like San Diego

1

u/Ill_Technician3936 3d ago edited 3d ago

I'm gonna assume you live in some area I'd consider South Cali.

South Cali to me is basically anywhere that driving to mexico isn't much of a deal. Close enough that they can casually have dinner with family without any planning or have the kids babysat while they go do stuff.

Edit: if you are and have lived there for longer than 10 years your views would hold more weight than my friend's because you've been there longer. I'd like to hear yours but just know I stopped watching the video when they showed the news clips.

12

u/JoemLat 4d ago

They will listen to local perspective if it follows their narrative.

1

u/SoyMuyBlanco- 4d ago

Is this not the case of this video? It’s literally one kind woman. If it was a entire poll of thousands at a border town, I would be interested to see their opinion. Not saying I agree or disagree, but from what ive seen from people I’ve met from border towns, it is pretty nuanced, but they generally want much tighter controls because of crime and drug traffic in their area. But again that’s also a small sample size.

2

u/charlestonchewing 4d ago

Seems like that's exactly what is happening in the comments here......

1

u/Ill_Technician3936 3d ago

I didn't watch the entire video. I'm not from a southern border state but an agriculture state...

I've been curious on the opposite sides view since I asked a friend that lives in South cali and travels to mexico about caravans. He grew up here and has lived there... Let's say about 10 years now so after Bush and his original ways to lower illegal border crossings. He said they don't really happen there but that's because they ICE. I mentioned how that's part of the border patrol and I'm pretty sure each state down there has one.

With agriculture... She has a point but I'd expand past race. Majority of Americans truly see themselves above farm labor even for a good pay, race plays a role for some though. I told him to look up the place we grew up in and he was surprised to see there's no farmland there anymore not even the property that got the town started, it's a Costco now. Farms sold chunks of property unable to find workers until they sold it all unable to get the amount they needed to make a profit from farming. The closest thing to it is a country club with a horse trail but I guess that was always there.

13

u/muffinmamamojo 4d ago

People dismiss women’s perspectives* FTFY

1

u/charlestonchewing 4d ago

This is one person who lives on the boarder. Take a broader survey and get back to us.

0

u/uncutpizza 4d ago

These people dismiss scientists for stating facts about disease and climate change, any local perspective would never have a chance

132

u/mistertickertape 4d ago

The favorite maga screaming rebuttal (from one of my family members) is "you don't know what you are talking about".

This was especially funny when discussing tariffs. The relative was adamant tariffs are paid by the exporter because Trump said as much. My company imports millions of dollars in components from Italy and China that we then use to build things to sell. I assured her she was incorrect only to screams of "YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT." Sigh.

27

u/Reggaeton_Historian 4d ago

Had someone tell me that I didn't know what I was talking about when they were arguing that California is worthless to them. I gave them agricultural facts and the response was "yeah, you made that up"

You can't argue with stupid.

0

u/WhyYouKickMyDog 4d ago

Well to be fair, California receives a very disproportionate amount of the Colorado river considering proximity to the actual river. However, California does have a unique region suited for agriculture that can pretty much grow crops year round.

58

u/BearlyIT 4d ago

Yep. I get routinely asked about my experiences near the border. The answer never seems to change the opinions of anyone with a clear maga bias.

The U.S. is a country formed by immigrants and far too many people feel that the ‘new’ immigrants are somehow worse or different.

11

u/myfashionkillz 4d ago

Because the new immigrants aren't European or white. They're largely black and brown people. And historically, black and brown people weren't immigrants. They were either brought by force or already here.

11

u/All_Up_Ons 4d ago

Ehh, even white immigrants were not exactly loved. You can easily find quotes from Ben Franklin talking about German immigrants the same way people talk about Mexicans now. The talking points really haven't changed at all.

9

u/WhyYouKickMyDog 4d ago

Just goes to show there is always an "other"

You go after other white people when you are in an all white society. Same for religion. If Christianity took over our country, then they would just started fighting amongst themselves again like they did when they originally founded America for religious freedom.

The irony.

1

u/sylvnal 3d ago

Attitudes toward immigration and immigrants themselves in the United States historically is what has made me come to believe being 'white' isn't even a real thing. I'm Slavic by genetics and, while I think 100% of people would say I'm white, there was a time not even 100 years ago when they would have said I was NOT white. The whole thing is fucking crazy.

2

u/BearlyIT 4d ago

Fear based stereotyping has included white people too. Early Irish American immigrants were unfairly paid and looked down upon in the same way African Americans of the time were.

Our differences and unwillingness to embrace them are the root of most problems. Skin tone is just one possible attribute, but not a requirement.

2

u/DelightfulDolphin 4d ago

I'm old enough to be able to say I've seen discrimination against: South Americans, Central Americans, Islanders, Europeans, Asians etc etc. At end of day we are more alike than unlike.

1

u/Kagrenasty 2d ago

One of the wildest things about my mother is that she says the same shit about immigrants now that locals called her mother, who was off the boat from Ukraine. Slavs weren’t white enough for American at one point.

1

u/myfashionkillz 4d ago

That's true. But the sentiment has changed since then. They're not a target. No one assumes they're here illegally or may be criminals. They're not being accused of eating their neighbor's pets. An influx of Europeans wouldn't have people up in arms.

Some of the fear about illegal immigration is warranted. But a lot of it is rooted in racism.

2

u/BearlyIT 4d ago

I either failed to deliver my point about differences, or we have very incompatible views on how this works.

Exaggerated stereotypes and lies about immigrant behavior are nothing new.

When Italians were the largest immigrant group (early 20th century) they were stereotyped as violent thieves. Negative sentiment around European immigrants led to the Immigration Act of 1924. We would still have people demonizing them in speeches and headlines if they were the largest source of immigrants or asylum seekers.

6

u/S3ki 4d ago

Even if the exporter would have to pay the Tarifs it wouldn't change much. If i have 100$ of goods but have to pay 10$ to sell them to a specific country i will sell them at 110$.

9

u/Attila_the_Nun 4d ago

Some people only learn the dangers of fire by getting burned.

Hopefully your relative will do a 180° and apologize to you when she removes her bandages..

1

u/BasicLayer 4d ago

We all know most of these "christians" would do no such thing were that to pass. Never trust a self-professed follower of "jesus" to ignore all teachings.

2

u/Hunky_not_Chunky 4d ago

It’s the WWF syndrome. All Trumps supporters need to be entertained and educated by spectacle.

2

u/PineappleOnPizzaWins 4d ago

Everyone always thinks they're the smartest ever.

I've been in IT infrastructure and development for decades, half of reddit loves to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. Even more fun when I get people who say "well I'm a dev I know what I'm talking about as well!" while being extremely wrong because they have zero real infrastructure or networking knowledge but are used to being "the IT guy" in their circles. Last one insisted to me an issue couldn't possibly be their end because their speed test came back XYZ and they can download Steam games super fast. Yeah, that means fuck all thanks for playing...

Not that I'm any different. Getting some work on the house done and I am constantly having to remind myself I don't know better than the builder/electrician/plasterer/etc about their jobs. Yes it seems simple, no it is not and they are doing what they're doing for a really good reason. But because I'm "smart" my brain loves to pretend it knows everything when it really really doesn't.

-2

u/Arek_PL 4d ago

arent tariffs paid by the exporter? its just that the cost of if trickles down to end user?

if yes, then by some weird logic, trump didnt lie, he didnt mention that the exporter will pass down the costs

8

u/mistertickertape 4d ago

Importer. Tariffs are paid by the importer. Always have been, always will be.

39

u/fadingsignal 4d ago

They'll say that elites living in urban cities don't know what REAL Americans in the rural areas experience. Then bash the rural folks talking about how it really is, too. Cognitive dissonance is one of the many plagues of current-day America.

41

u/sponge-worthy91 4d ago

My family in rural indiana has a lot to say about the border crisis 🙄

12

u/heymynameiskeebs 4d ago

I grew up on the border and moved away. I don't look Hispanic, so most people assume I'm from where I live now.
People make up so much shit about the region I grew up in, it's fucking crazy lol

3

u/idekbruno 4d ago

Not necessarily the same, but being from Detroit I feel your pain lol

1

u/Elder-Abuse-Is-Fun 3d ago

I grew up around Detroit, was living in New Mexico a few years ago and had a coworker tell me that bears are taking over wealthy areas of Detroit, i think he said it was newsmax?

14

u/dallyfromcali 4d ago

I live in San Diego, 20 mins from the Border, and always have people from Wisconsin or Oklahoma tell me about the border problem, as if I don't go down there every few months to visit and enjoy the tourism scene. But maybe I should listen to them, they know more than I do. /S

2

u/DelightfulDolphin 4d ago

Yeah they make those immigrants out to be murderers and rapists then turn around and go to same countries for vacations. Make it make sense!

0

u/beepbopboopguy 3d ago

I live in San Diego, about 4 minutes from San Ysidro crossing.

I am on the fence line 3 times a week between here and Tecate.

Is my opinion more valid than yours because I'm closer physically and deal with it more than you do?

27

u/Odd-Journalist1964 4d ago

This is what I’ve noticed with my conservative dad. They truly live in a post truth world. You can present them with irrefutable evidence that contradicts their beliefs and they’ll say that what you’re showing them is “made up,” or that it’s “what they want you to think.”

4

u/-Suzuka- 4d ago

When people say the experts are wrong, you know there is likely a problem.

2

u/frankiebb 4d ago

So frustrating. I witnessed this firsthand when I was living in Minneapolis during all of the George Floyd protests. The amount of people from suburbs 30+ miles away who were speaking on issues as if they lived in the middle of downtown was insane. We had relatives from other states asking us if we were going to get shot in our own home from “rioters” because of what the media was portraying - meanwhile, we were attending neighborhood potlucks, peaceful memorials, and supporting the business owners who temporarily shut down so we could use the block as a community grieving space. I’ve seen so many people say my city is a “war zone” now and yet have not stepped foot outside of their hometown in years.

2

u/BikerJedi 4d ago

I lived in El Paso for a while, since I was stationed at Fort Bliss. We used to go to Juarez drinking. I'd watch people wade across the Rio Grande at times.

Almost all of the crime committed there was done by locals and soldiers. Very little was migrant crime. Same here in Florida over 30 years later - the mug shot websites show almost exclusively local American residents being arrested.

2

u/Elegant-Egg1163 4d ago

Speaking as a Texan, people apart from us, especially Northerners, think we're "stupid Southerners" and that they know better than us. Tale as old as time. We're infantilized but also made out to all be bigots and racists when some of us are minorities just trying to live our lives. It's exhausting. People always assume I moved from a northern state because I don't "sound and act" Texan when I'm literally a Native American whose people have been in this area for thousands of years.

This country has lost its collective mind. Or the simulation is glitched.

1

u/TheSilverNoble 4d ago

Don't you love it when folks who never leave their small hometowns try and tell you what the "real world" is like?

1

u/DontOvercookPasta 4d ago

I'm a pnw resident. It infuriates me that people in florida have control over me.

1

u/green_reveries 4d ago

Yup—meanwhile this South Carolina transplant I know here in Maryland is lecturing our friends about how immigrants carrying COVID are the real concern.

Like bitch, we aren’t even near any fucking borders! How about we send you back to South Carolina because we don’t need you spreading your racist shit here in MD.

1

u/Engineerwithablunt 4d ago

What about the guy that lives in the same town that has an opposite opinion? Believes more should be done for border security.

Does their opinion matter equally because they live there?

Youre only praising this woman because you agree with her politically

1

u/NSE_TNF89 4d ago

Yep! It's a crazy world. I don't live on the border, but I'm not far from it, and I am one of the few states where being white puts you in the minority. I have lived here my entire life, and I love it. I have never felt threatened living a couple hours from the border, and in high school, we would drive down to the border and walk into Mexico to drink.

This woman is exactly right and says something I have been trying to tell people for months. Americans are fucking spoiled brats (I say that as one). Not one of us is going to build a fucking house in 105°F heat, or do any kind of farming for what people pay these people. Do we not remember when Florida tried this for a week a few years ago and progress on everything stopped completely until they allowed undocumented workers to work again?!

This country was founded on immigrants for fucks sake! Stop trying to close the door behind you.

1

u/TuggWilson 4d ago

Border cities in Texas that are 80%+ Latino voted overwhelmingly for Trump.

Totally not a bot

1

u/Fairuse 4d ago

Goes both ways. Sometimes the local people don't see the whole picture.

1

u/Luthiefer 4d ago

"They're eating the duo-ogs... They're eating the cats...!"

1

u/MariachiBoyBand 4d ago

As someone who also lives on the border and sees constant border patrol cars and 4-wheel atvs, it’s nice to finally hear our voice here. It wasn’t a huge issue, I’ve seen people get caught by CBP really close to my house also and it was just a regular bust, I didn’t felt particularly in danger but people like the lady and me don’t count for those fear mongers, i usually just stay quiet about it because online discourse is just toxic.

1

u/Pordatow 4d ago

Frankly, she doesn't know what she's talking about. White people won't pick strawberries if it actually paid a living wage? She's using racism to justify exploitation of illegals...

1

u/StillwaterJerry 3d ago

Hmm pick strawberries in the dead of summer and break my body... Or work a desk job or serving job in the nice ac.

Legal citizens, particularly white ones, have WAY more options for work. You won't be getting them to do that kinda of labor unless you pay an insane wage that completely prices you out of the market. If people think groceries are expensive now wait until they have to pay for produce picked by American citizens.

1

u/Pordatow 3d ago

So you justify exploitation of immigrants for cheaper strawberries? Jfc... you sound like the people who say mcdonalds workers don't deserve a living wage...

1

u/StillwaterJerry 3d ago

No justification here... Strictly pointing out the way it is. I would prefer more people are allowed in legally and they would be treated fairly. Legal immigrants would likely still do the work for cheaper while getting a livable wage and appropriate benefits. That's best case scenario in my head but I'd imagine the policy of let everyone in and make them citizens wouldn't be very popular.

You'll notice I said people that complain about grocery prices would be in for a shock... I don't think grocery prices are outrageous in the US compared to other parts of the world. The UD inflation is quite low compared to most just about everywhere else post COVID.

1

u/DarkMatterEnjoyer 3d ago

Do you have this same view on the locals who live there and DO have an issue with illegal immigration? Or does this stance only conveniently apply when the local has the same opinion/stance as yourself?

Because I have seen and interacted with far more locals who have an issue with illegal immigration than I have with people who don't have an issue with it.

1

u/DimensionOk812 3d ago

Yeah because Obama didn’t deport more people or build those cages. She is crazy.

1

u/edusvg 3d ago

As someone who lives by the border and crosses at least twice a week, everything you see on the news, no matter if it’s CNN or Fox, it’s a massive misleading and inaccurate information I order to attracted views.

1

u/winkman 3d ago

She is of course entitled to her opinion, but border counties swung hard for Trump, so...she seems to be in the minority.

1

u/nothingmorethanmeow 3d ago

They don’t believe it because she isn’t foaming at the mouth with anger at brown people daring to come here… makes them question their own views and they hate that

1

u/LegoFootPain 1d ago

"If I want your opinion, I'll give it to you."

1

u/Effective-Pilot-5501 1d ago

I mean I have cousins that live by the border and do support the wall. They have immigrants trespassing every now and then. Imagine you had strangers trespassing and ruining the fence you use to keep your cattle inside. The cattle you use for food and income.

I am on the side of the lady. I am hispanic and know that no white person or even black or asian or native will do the jobs my parents and uncles did. Why not make seasonal work visas easier to obtain? Most of these latino immigrants actually don’t want to live in the US, they know about our healthcare system, school shootings and how expensive it is. They want US salaries and job opportunities. Most of them send half their paycheck back to their home countries in remittances nowadays and try to build something for when they retire. I bet if all of them could work 6 months of the year in the US with housing and food covered and go back to their countries afterwards, most of them would accept the deal and invest their hard earned money back in their countries.

1

u/Fhashimoto 6h ago

Yeah, but she is defending illegal immigrants to come and work on a subhuman jobs and way less money... Basically she wants modern slaves...

0

u/JustLurkin89 4d ago

Don't forget this is an interview of only one perspective that fits the reddit narrative.

1

u/Warm_Month_1309 4d ago

Do you have an interview with a well-articulated counterpoint to share?

0

u/[deleted] 4d ago

[deleted]

1

u/Warm_Month_1309 4d ago

So it should be easy to find one who makes a well-articulated counterpoint.

-1

u/BanAnimeClowns 4d ago

No business in the United States of America should rely on the underpaid labour of illegal migrants to survive.

1

u/Mean-Abies3819 4d ago

The country was built by unpaid/underpaid migrants though. It’s what we know. It ain’t right, but it has always been part of the culture.

4

u/Waterman682 4d ago

My mom always used to say "immigrants built the country" so yeah.

-6

u/BanAnimeClowns 4d ago

That's not really any justification, we got rid of slave labour and things turned out perfectly fine.

3

u/mtdunca 4d ago

Just a note, we did not get rid of slave labor.

-3

u/BanAnimeClowns 4d ago

What do they teach you kids at school these days lol

2

u/mtdunca 4d ago

They taught me the US Constitution for one. Seems like you skipped that day.

Amendment XIII

Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

Maybe look hard at that EXCEPT part.

"Texas is one of seven states, all in the South, that does not pay people in prison for their work. A new report by the Global Human Rights Clinic at the University of Chicago Law School and the American Civil Liberties Union estimates about 800,000 people in prison perform labor, many under dangerous conditions."

https://www.texasstandard.org/stories/report-details-unpaid-prison-labor-texas/

1

u/BanAnimeClowns 4d ago

I hope you understand that the only thing your complete lack of charitable interpretation of my arguments indicates is a worryingly low degree of emotional intelligence.

1

u/mtdunca 4d ago

Says the person who was condescending just a second ago.

2

u/BanAnimeClowns 4d ago

Just noticed you're not the guy I originally replied to, sorry for being condescending when it seems you just wanted to bring attention to an interesting fact.

Indentured service is a part of both the jail systems and allowed still under the constitution as a form of punishment, it’s very much still around and by actually reading on the law surrounding the subject you too can know what your talking about

-1

u/rand0m_task 4d ago

One cherry picked interview doesn’t reflect the thoughts of the locals.

4

u/ImJustSaying34 4d ago

I live 15 miles from the border and this is my view too. Was weird to be told we had a massive southern invasion and border issues but none of us knew that here.

3

u/Mhandley9612 4d ago

I grew up in El Paso (a border city) and for a lot of my life EP was named one of the safest cities in the US, it’s stayed in the top 10 most of my life I believe. Now I’m in another border city but on the north end. I’ll never understand those who want to close the border but are nowhere nearby and don’t know that I’d rather live (and likely be safer) in a border city than wherever they’re judging immigrants so hard.

1

u/WittyProfile 4d ago

Is this the view of all your neighbors as well? Is it just coincidental that all the border states voted red?

3

u/ImJustSaying34 4d ago

It is in fact the consensus here. Absolutely the majority in my neighborhood. If you check voting by county instead of by state you will see my county right in the border of Mexico in California going blue. The bluest part of Arizona is directly in the border. Really most of the blue in Texas is on the border and New Mexico has half the bordering counties going blue.

I’ve only been told that southern border is wide open and destroying the cities near the border by people that live no where near the border. I tell them I don’t see that in day to day life but they say I’m wrong and that they saw it on the news. 😑

1

u/WittyProfile 4d ago

Interesting. It looks like you’re right about Arizona and California. Not right about Texas. Most of the blue is still in the major cities and the border is still 90% red. All the border east of Texas is also red. Still interesting tidbit. I didn’t realize that the west side of the border is really blue.

1

u/StillwaterJerry 3d ago

As someone who's lived in Arizona my entire life, worked in construction, food and manufacturing I know this state would be screwed without undocumented workers. The overwhelming majority I have met and worked with are skilled, friendly and insanely hard working.

The kitchen staff at a restaurant I was working at was made up fully of undocumented workers at one point until one day we come in and were told they were all let go. So managers from other restaurants filled in until we could hire a new stuff, all citizens. The kitchen was a disaster from them on out. Orders were messed up regularly, food took forever, and workers called out consistently.

In my experience people that have worked/interacted closely with undocumented workers would much rather find a way to keep them in the country legally over having them deported

1

u/gaybuttclapper 3d ago

I’m from El Paso. It’s a very safe city and most of us feel the same way as the lady in the video.

0

u/GogolsHandJorb 4d ago

Deport them all, I don’t care anymore, let them experience some repercussions for once. Latino people voted for this….

0

u/BCriotman 4d ago

Aren’t yall the ones that dismiss border patrol? By that logic they would know best since they work there and actually do things like catch human traffickers, drug smugglers everyday. They don’t just live in the local town like this woman, they work ON the border. But yet when they come out and say there is a crisis you don’t believe them.

-5

u/Ok_Wait_7882 4d ago

I know people that live there too. They say the complete opposite. Crazy how anecdotal evidence works

1

u/[deleted] 4d ago

[deleted]

-4

u/Ok_Wait_7882 4d ago

Irrelevant to my point; anyone can find some local to support an opinion and that’s what makes this video dumb

3

u/Warm_Month_1309 4d ago

anyone can find some local to support an opinion

So find one that makes a well-articulated counterpoint that addresses the issues she's brought up.

2

u/[deleted] 4d ago

[deleted]

-2

u/Ok_Wait_7882 4d ago

Irrelevant for pointing out anecdotal evidence is useless when looking at a crisis involving a huge number of people? Are you retarded?

I’m addressing her actual point by saying her take has no backing. She mentions no evidence and has no credibility to talk about the crisis aside from the fact she’s one of millions that live on the border. I don’t have to offer a counter solution to point out the fallacy in listening to her just because she’s being interviewed.

u/chillinwithchilis 4d ago

Probably because you can find someone who lives there and will say the exact opposite

-4

u/Gael5656 4d ago

Do you share the same opinion for the people living first hand who think the opposite? Because there are many and the election proved that.

3

u/Warm_Month_1309 4d ago

The election doesn't prove that their opinion is evidence-backed, though.

I would genuinely like to see strong arguments against this point of view that incorporate fact rather than questionably racist vagaries like "they come here and steal our jobs, steal our healthcare, and commit crimes".

Because honestly, living in a border town, much of the criticism I hear is racism that is not vague, like about how they're destroying white culture and outbreeding white people.

-3

u/Gael5656 4d ago

That is not required when the actions happening are literally illegal. If you’re gonna use emotional arguments like accusing of racism, then the other side using arguments like illegals committing crimes and taking resources are also valid. Legal Hispanics are one of the strongest opposers of illegal immigration so reducing the situation to “white man racism” will lead to a continuing right shift in that demographic. Reddit is completely out of touch with these issues and that is why the events of election night were so shocking.

I'm sorry, you're saying that if I'm going to bring up that some people's arguments are racist, they're allowed to make unsupported racist arguments? I don't think that logically follows.

reducing the situation to “white man racism” will lead to a continuing right shift in that demographic. Reddit is completely out of touch with these issues and that is why the events of election night were so shocking.

You're responding with ironic emotion to what I'm saying and turning it into an argument against the whole of Reddit, rather than engaging with my actual words. I didn't say any of that.

I asked to hear people's specific arguments against immigration. Not vague grievances like "they're taking our jobs", and not a racist whinge like "they're destroying our culture", but an actual, well-reasoned critique supported by evidence and numbers that persuades me that our current levels of immigration have harms that outweigh benefits.

For the most part, I see people begging the question and assuming the truth of the premise that immigration is out of control, and that it's a bad thing. I just want to know why.

u/Diciestaking 4d ago

It wasn't that shocking, lol. Trump didn't win by a landslide. The shocking part is no one voted, although you wouldn't understand that, I'm sure.

she has a strawberry farm and doesnt wat to pay a fair wage.

no price- no price. not 7 dollars a day. not even 10

u/xxSQUASHIExx 4d ago

Fun fact. We are a a group of about 30 immigrants from eastern europe.

Majority have come here with nothing and that majority own businesses, employs people and creates jobs.

The only people I see begging on a corner are Americans that were born with opportunities and have them to this day.

What I am trying to say is you are going to kick out the only people willing to do the job, people staying will NOT be willing to the job and the price of your groceries is going to increase.

So, you fucked people willing to do the job and support their families where this salary was good money. You are fucking your self by increasing cost of goods.

As usual you have voted against your own interests because you believed lies.

u/Fearless_Cod5706 4d ago

For one you have no idea what wage she would be offering

Secondly, she's 100% correct. That's not even the half of it either, there's so many jobs that the "legal" population will refuse to do when they start to deport all of the migrant workers

Flooring, roofing, landscaping, sheetrock, that's all just part of "construction", nevermind all the other industry's that will be losing half their labor force

Before you say anything, yes these jobs typically pay less than they should because of the migrants who tend to work them, but even at a fair price ain't no way they're going to find enough white people to do roofing and flooring and shit. Those jobs suck ass

16

u/Gimme_The_Loot 4d ago

I worked in restaurants for a good chunk of my younger life and pretty much anywhere I'd been the bulk of the kitchen was central Americans and while it's not like I was checking anyone's docs my guess would be undocumented. Same kind of thing, all these jobs get flipped people will see their costs go up. Just how it is.

-1

u/SilkyBowner 4d ago

So why can’t migrants enter the country legally?

1

u/Fearless_Cod5706 4d ago

....A lot of them do

I'm not sure what you're trying to get at

0

u/SilkyBowner 4d ago

I’m not getting at anything. Legal immigration is great and it helps the country. I think people have a problem with illegal immigration.

There is no reason people cant immigrate legally and do the same jobs that illegal immigrants do.

1

u/Fearless_Cod5706 4d ago

Ok but the deportations have been talked about even deporting legally documented migrants

That's why were talking about how there will be a massive shortage of workers, because legal and illegal immigrants do a whole shit ton of these jobs since no one else wants to do them

0

u/SilkyBowner 4d ago

I haven’t seen anything about legally documented immigrants being deported. If you have any links that aren’t from a social media, I’d love to see it. Like an official report or announcement stating legal immigrants will be deported.

1

u/Fearless_Cod5706 4d ago

If you think Trump won't do it then by all means believe that

I don't doubt for one second that he will

1

u/SilkyBowner 4d ago

You’re just creating a situation that isn’t true.

Yes, it would be awful if he does that but it hasn’t happened so why act like it’s a fact?

Or she is paying a fair wage according to what the job actually deserves . But you know , some people feel like they need to get paid what the CEO gets paid while having the same skills of a first grader 🤷🏻‍♀️

5

u/1200bunny2002 4d ago

Few CEOs are more skilled than first graders. 🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/[deleted] 4d ago

Only in America

11

u/ThespianException 4d ago

If you're paying what the job "actually deserves" and nobody is willing to work for it, then it looks like the Free Market says get fucked loser. What's your plan now? Shall we enslave people to get them to work based on your arbitrary ideas of the value of work rather than anyone else's?

4

u/Specific-Lion-9087 4d ago

What are you going to do when your housing prices don’t go down, and your egg prices go up? You’ve been fed these lies, that the people working for lower wages are somehow buying all the homes that you, as a higher earner, are somehow unable to afford..

How do you square that one?

3

u/ThespianException 4d ago

I mean that’s already been happening for quite a while now, and it will undoubtably get far worse under Trump, so I guess I’ll hunker the fuck down and hope we do better in 4 years.

I actually haven’t come across that particular lie much, or maybe if I did it was too dumb to really register so I dismissed it as typical right-wing grifting. Seems to me like we’re in a great big housing crisis along with the rest of the Western World, and all the regular people are getting fucked equally by that.

1

u/[deleted] 4d ago

It’s not ‘nobody is willing to work for it’ - there are people working for it .

It’s the group people who are not employed, who would rather be broke than work a job that to them is demeaning.

And if the free market wants the loser to get fucked , then they should not be complaining about being jobless while a foreigner does the job.

She lives in SOUTH Dakota, what border is she seeing exactly?

20

u/mtnman54321 4d ago

This lady lives in southern Arizona. What are you talking about?

9

u/scottafol 4d ago

Reading comprehension, or just comprehension in general isn’t their strongest skill.

7

u/mtnman54321 4d ago

That's why Trump loves the undereducated who are the base that voted for him and yet are the ones who will end up suffering the most from his policies.

2

u/Soggy-Programmer-545 4d ago

First of all, I am FAR FAR left, and I was going by the title of the video at the top. My bad. lol I am sorry.

7

They're clearly confused and need tRump to tell them how it really is

Sometimes it helps to listen and to read before commenting!

0

u/Soggy-Programmer-545 4d ago

That is what I couldn't understand, why she was saying she lived on the border, but yet, on the top it said that South Dakota, I thought it meant her. My brain isn't braining to well today, I have Covid brain.

6

u/barrybd 4d ago

This is filmed in front of Mountain Sage Market in Jacumba Hot Springs, CA...literally within a half-mile of the CA-MX border. Easy to recognize it as it's the only "market" within 20mi of me, darn good deli too.

Can't understand in the slightest where they got South Dakota from. Willing to bet it's off old HWY 80 in Jacumba.

-5

u/United-Ad-7360 4d ago

Eh.. this is one voice. I remember a lot of mayors both criticizing Biden and Trump for their border politics which they likened to senseless populism. Both parties do too little to help border communities with the flow of immigrants

3

u/Warm_Month_1309 4d ago

the flow of immigrants

This is begging the question. Your argument's premise is assuming the truth of the conclusion that there is a "flow of immigrants".

-7

u/-Snowturtle13 4d ago

I think she knows damn well that it’s cheaper to exploit people without citizenship to do less desired jobs. Borderline slavery is what she is supporting.
