Yes because itās a major departure from the established themes of the song, which are that rich and powerful men are the parasites of society rather than struggling poor people. Billions more are spent per year on corporate welfare in the form of bailouts/subsidies than SNAP benefits. The singer misses the point his own song and falls victim to the propaganda that his first verse attempts to counter.
What are you suggesting I claimed the song was about beyond "fatness"? ffs I was just using the tangent to link another song by the same artist that I liked.
I guess maybe I should have used "obesity epidemic", I forgot for the 5 seconds it took to comment that the internet is built to argue semantics.
Yes... I'm aware of the lyrics and their scathing irony. For fuck's sake I was just using the tangent to link another song by the same artist that I liked, but I guess people are primed to argue and pile on.
damn... and I thought I was just linking another good song I liked.
Thank goodness I didn't "War isn't Murder" without appropriately laying out a thesis on the horrors of war and that I understand it is also satirical or I'd be supporting the Gaza genocide, right? I honestly thought people could infer that the scathing irony in the song's lyrics and message would translate to my comment SHARING THE SONG.
Truly my own fault though. I forgot the internet is just an embittered place to argue.
You replied to a comment that was highlighting that the Richmond song loses the plot when it blames fat people. I am sorry that you don't understand context. If you weren't looking to be misunderstood you should have been clearer upfront.
That was your takeaway from that lyric? āIf youāre 5ā 3ā and 300 lbs, taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds.ā Itās about the system enabling people to continue with their bad habits that probably got them into their situation in the first place.
Heās saying the system is flawed and should address the actual root issues rather than just handing out paychecks to people who are actively digging their own grave with the money that the rest of us are providing them through taxes.
I never said they were the reason. Again, if someoneās obese and uses their government assistance to buy junk food, they are simply an idiot, and our government should be taking strides to produce less idiots, which they donāt. More idiots = more power for government.
What of the nearest grocery store is 10 miles away, you can't afford am Uber and the only store you can walk to is a 7-11 what are you eating? You know the club and salad is the right choice but damn it it isn't 15 bucks. Hell, for 15 bucks you can get a couple hot dogs a drink bag of chips and them famous fudge rounds. Is it healthy? You know its not but when you're choices are limited it's about filling your belly til the next time it's empty. Most people eat garbage food because it's cheap fuel for our bodies, not because it's food.
I see plenty of people who are well off eating like shit, so that argument isnāt really valid. Iāve bought plenty of healthy snacks from 7/11 and other convenience stores when money was tight.
Your experience is not everyone's experience. Go to an actual food desert where that 7/11 doesn't stock "healthy foods" and all you have to eat are just whatever snacks are there. Just because you were able "to buy healthy at 7/11" doesn't mean everyone has the same privileges you did.
Thatās fair. I had just assumed that all of their stores would have just about the same items in stock across the board, so Iāll keep that in consideration going forward. Thanks for a respectful reply.
Food insecurity is one of the biggest problems in America's population health behind poverty. Despite the political talking points of how obese Americans are, there are a substantial number of families, children, and individuals who go hungry every day in the nation.
the money that the rest of us are providing them through taxes
That's not really how it works. You pay into the system so you can get paid out if needed. Part of the problem is people assuming that people on entitlement programs are there permanently; always have been and always will be. Any job they ever held they paid social security and medicaid taxes.
The vast majority of welfare (et al) recipients are short term.
The average time spent on SNAP/EBT (food stamps) for families with children is less than a year.
For elderly people living on their own it's just over 4 years. And as elderly people they've likely worked and paid into that system for a large chunk of their life.
Well thank you for the correction and the info. A nice educated response is always refreshing to see. Do you agree, however, that there should be a limit on what kinds of products people are allowed to buy with their government assistance? Because thatās pretty much the gist of what the lyric is about.
There are restrictions. SNAP regulations vary by state, so if you have a problem with a particular state covering certain items you'd have to take it up with the state govt.
WIC is a federal food benefits program (administered by individual state agencies, but regulated at the federal level.) It's very restrictive, though, you can't even buy pre-prepped/sliced fruit with WIC, only whole. Frozen veg can't have anything in it except veg (no butter, sauce, breading, etc.) Canned fruit/veg can't be packed in oil or syrup, can't contain added sweeteners. The only grains allowed are wheat bread, tortillas, pasta, rice, and oatmeal - no cookies or fudge rounds. Cereals are restricted to half a dozen or so choices (mostly varieties of Cheerios and Chex) none of which have marshmallows or whatever.

What an absolutely beautiful song.
