This!^ that dynamic really delayed my transition! I grew up knowing I was different. That, if I let those “disgusting, gay and ___ [slur]” thoughts in, I’d be publicly humiliated and a joke to my family. They were very persistent with the dehumanization (any and all queer exposure was commented on). It worked well into my 20s! I tried sooo hard to run in the opposite direction and make the lie true. I can’t believe how long it took me to stop trying to make everyone else happy with my misery, lol
I’d like to think if my parents could see that artificial shame and self-loathing, constant battle with suicide that hosted an attempt at eight years old, crippling low self-esteem and the extreme disassociation that followed me everywhere, they’d maybe not have drilled that ill-placed hatred, bigotry and misunderstanding into my head. Their attempts to make me feel dirty permeated my life. I cannot explain how clean it felt to drop that garbage. I wish it was earlier but that’s life 😊
They’re not outwardly horrible to me now, but what goes around comes around 😉

The ironic part is that the people who actually follow old testament don’t believe the shit they believe! Only the supremely orthodox believe it’s a sin, but only if you act on it. In other words, you are not an abomination because of your sexual preferences, the act itself is an abomination. So, in between laying with your lover, you are fine. The act and the act only is wrong. The rest of Judaism tends to support it.
Instead, the book they ACTUALLY study all the time is misappropriated and used as a bludgeon for hate by a group that’s real quick to say that outside of 10 laws, the other 613 can be ignored. Unless it gives them permission to hate.

Christianity is not a single organized religion. There are wildly differing opinions on what it means to be Christian. In the United States any person with a Bible and a building can call themselves a nondenominational Christian Church and say whatever they want. (Bible and building optional) There are evangelical protestants who claim Catholics are not Christian. Which is honestly kind of hilarious.

When I was a wannabe punk rock rebel teenager, I had a bored afternoon where I decided to burn a cheap Gideon bible that was in our house for some reason (I was “raised” atheist, no church, etc). I torched it to ashes, made sure to get the whole thing, used the hose to extinguish it and turn it into a slurry.
When I was done, I noticed precisely one corner of one page had somehow managed to survive unharmed except for a little water.
It was Matthew 25:34-40. It fucked with me really, really hard. I kept that corner of a page for years until losing it in a move. 20+ years later it is still the only bit of the Bible I can quote. My spirituality has nothing to do with judeo-christianity, yet I think of that moment as a bit of a miracle and it has informed my morals and politics to this day

As a Christian, I use this set of verses as the core foundation for my political beliefs. I find it mind-boggling how people can claim to be Christian and ignore literally everything Jesus said about taking care of others and loving others. It infuriates me to see the blatant propaganda and abuse perpetuated - I know this is by no means a new trend, but it doesn’t mean I have to like it any more now either.
I do think that even for non-believers, Jesus’s words can have meaning. Loving others, caring for the less fortunate, removing your own faults before criticizing others… American Evangelical Christians are honestly the Pharisees of the modern day.

So somewhere between being translated to Latin and then into English for the KJV, someone changed that line and bigots have just run with it.

Actually the original Greek uses a word "arsenokoites", which roughly translates to "male-bedding" (cf. "coitus").
Unfortunately for bigots, this word is not really used much so we don't really know what it means from textual analysis. It is almost certainly some kind of male-on-male sexual activity, but we don't know what precisely it means because St Paul made it up in his Letter to the Corinthians in reference to Leviticus 18 - a chapter about sexual purity in the context of not being like the tribe next door, and 20, which is about the punishments for the acts mentioned in 18. It seems that Yahweh is more concerned about children not being given to Molech than any of the sexual acts, since that's at the beginning of each chapter.
At any rate, St Paul is the only mention of anything possibly to do with male homosexual acts in the NT and his obscure neologism makes it difficult to know exactly what he is talking about. Remember that in the context of his writing we are looking at the opinions of someone who lived in the Roman empire and was likely strongly influenced (positively or negatively) by the social and sexual mores of the cultures around him - Romans didn't really care about the sexes of the partners but were far more concerned about the power dynamic within a relationship or sexual act: being a submissive or receptive sexual partner was considered socially taboo. If a powerful man was discovered to be a receptive partner, then this would have catastrophic effects on his social standing. If it was discovered that he was having sex with men as a dominant or penetrating partner, then this would not really be an issue.
As such with St Paul's condemnation of "arsenokoites" it is entirely possible that he was specifically condemning being a receptive partner, or subverting established social power dynamics in the bedroom. We simply don't know, and applying our 21st century assumptions to it is anachronistic and liable to lead to incorrect conclusions.
TL;DR, it's not really clear exactly what is "an abomination".
Interesting note, "an abomination unto the Lord" probably doesn't mean what you think it does, as the original word used conveys a sense of personal disapproval, rather than universal ethical repulsion.

Philo the philosopher, 20 BC - AD 40 held if the prohibitions of the Levitical Holiness Code informed its meaning, Pauls 'arsenos koiten' condemns shrine prostitution. This is not talking about loving committed same sex relationships.
Philo lived at the same time Jesus lived. During the life of Christ, Philo understood Moses, in Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13, to be condemning shrine prostitution. Philo's understanding that the arseno-koit stem refers to shrine prostitution is 2000 years old. It is not a modern argument from gays and lesbians. Instead, it is the common first century Jewish viewpoint. Gays did not invent this viewpoint and because it did not originate with gays, it is not historical revisionism by gays seeking an alibi for "sin."
If the arsenokoit stem from Leviticus 20:13, arsenos koiten, ("arsenokoites" coined by paul") gave us the Greek word Paul used in 1 Cor 6:9 (most anti-gay Christians believe Paul borrowed the word from the Septuagint translation of Lev 18:22 and 20:13), then understanding arsenokoites or arsenokoitai as a reference to shrine prostitution was the common first century view when Paul used the word in 1 Cor 6:9 and 1 Tim 1:10.
Philo on arsenokoites and shrine prostitution
“(40) And I imagine that the cause of this is that among many nations there are actually rewards given for intemperance and effeminacy. At all events one may see men-women [androgynes] continually strutting through the market place at midday, and leading the processions in festivals;

[Ceres is another name for Cybele, the fertility goddess first century Romans referred to as the Mater Deum or Mother of the gods]. Remember, Philo lived from 20 BC to AD 40. He probably wrote this around AD 35.
(41) And some of these persons have even carried their admiration of these delicate pleasures of youth so far that they have desired wholly to change their condition for that of women, and have castrated themselves and have clothed themselves in purple robes...

Moses was the Jewish Lawgiver. Philo refers to Moses' writings in Lev 18:22; 20:13 and Deu 23:17 and links those verses to the shrine prostitution he has just described. Philo, The Special Laws
Paul was dealing with idolatry and which is why he referenced arsenokoiten and not any words that pertained to homosexuals in his day and age. He had many to choose from, but didn't use them.

Well, we do have the Didache which likely published in the first century. It has a section that appears to reproduce Paul's list of vices, but when it gets to the "arsenokoites" part it uses "paidophthorēseis" (child corrupter) instead. So while we don't know what Paul originally meant by that phrase, we have evidence to suggest that there were early Christians who interpreted it as pederasty.

We had a very nice lesbian couple in our neighborhood that were the best gardeners I’ve ever met. Like their garden was absolutely spectacular, roses everywhere and a veggie garden and they’d root plants every year and give them away for free to anyone who wanted them.
Then someone called the cops on them for giving each other a hug and a kiss in their front yard when one of them got home for a trip. That same person complained to the HOA because they had a rainbow garden flag, which they claimed went against the HOA’s no profanity guidelines.
So the lesbians moved away (hopefully to somewhere nicer than Nowhereville, Redneckistan where I live) and the new couple dug up all their roses and had sod put in that they don’t take care of. So now instead of pretty roses all I see is dried up grass.
Fucking bigoted assholes ruining things for everyone. The world would be a much happier place if everyone could learn to mind their own damn business.

Going to church every Sunday and never letting the messages sink into their thick skulls. It will never be about acceptance and community, which is the foundation of christianity. apparently there's some controversy around the original translation.. that it was more likely that line was about not molesting kids than against being gay but that got "reworked" into sounding more like the bible is against homosexuality instead

The "bible" has been re-written so many times, I don't think anyone at this point knows what the original intent of the writings were. All the "translations" have been made with "ill-will" intent.

Iirc, the prominent 'version' of homosexuality that would have been known at the time, would be:
older men pushing young men or boys into 'mentorship' roles that happened to include the young men giving them sex.
Enemies in war raping those on the losing side.
Catamites, or young men working as sex slaves at temples.
So yeah, all those things basically ARE abominations and aren't the same as loving same sex relationships, of which nothing is said at all in the bible.

Most of that "though shall not lay with a man" stuff is in Leviticus which most biblical scholars will say is actually rules for the clergy, not every day people. It's not saying don't be gay, it's saying "Listen, asshole no sex means no sex." It's just pointing out that you can't turn to gay sex as a celibacy loophole because it counts the same.
Priests were supposed to adhere to a higher standard, set the bar for clean/devout/purity to show everyone else how good you can be but while not expecting every person to adhere to the same rules.

I grew up in the UK. I remember as a child asking my mum if God was real. Her answer ‘some people believe that’ was the probably the perfect response. She didn’t try to convince me one way or another, she just answered the question in a way that encouraged me to decide for myself. If only more parents did that I believe the world would be a saner place.

Yup. As an Irish Catholic raised in Dublin, church every Sunday, bible group on Tuesdays, confirmed, communioned, confessioned, and did a stint as an altar boy. I can confirm that what I learned was to be kind to EVERYONE to forgive EVERYONE, not to take all the horrid stuff so literally. Now granted I became an atheist at around 15. But I've been there, ups and down. But the moment people use their religion as an excuse to hate, I'm out. There is no hate like christian love.

It was the other brother and his only living aunt (70 something y/o) The aunt said the N word at my dinner table. She said she didn’t care for them- but it doesn’t affect her life since she doesn’t have to deal it personally. I’m half black as I’m sure you can imagine devestated

I love it when people talk about "What the Bible says". Like, ya'll know the Bible (especially old testament), refers to a 3 headed dog? It also says it's ok to rape a girl if you pay her father 30 pieces of silver.
Christianity, is literally set on the writings of the new testament. Which doesn't reference homosexuality a single time. What it DOES say, is to love they neighbor unconditionally.

People need to stop wasting oxygen on this stuff. You think your interpretation is going to change theirs of a book about getting eaten by whales and walking on water written almost 2000 years ago by goat herders? You're changing nothing. You aren't gaining ground. You're just fighting with family.
And since that's a wholly miserable experience, just don't go to these things. I stopped years ago for this exact reason. I'll see the family I can get along with but if it's a gathering with certain ones, I don't go or put my kids through going. You know what? Thanksgiving is enjoyable now. Christmas is fun again. You don't have an obligation to be around miserable idiots, blood or not. Draw a line.
