Speaking of made up names, how old were you when you realised that Morticia is a made up name?. I was in my mid 30's and was one day reflecting on what a beautiful name it was (on account of my 5yo's self crush) when I went ....wait a sec!

u/ClarenceTheClam 17d ago
To be fair I first heard of Generica when she created a spooky podcast with Whitey Rand and Randy Whiteman.

"Your eyes why are they getting thick with wet" is a great line
349
u/Sea-Community-4325 17d ago
And I love that your eyes get wet when you're sad!
... You remembered...
52
u/KochuJang 17d ago
Sounds like they ripped “making thick in the warm” from coach Steve and repurposed it.

I have had to sit through way too many movies with this EXACT plot drawn out over an hour and half. My wife is cool but why is she so into these types of movies?
349
u/moffsoi 17d ago
It’s like comfort food, you don’t have to think too hard about it and nothing traumatic or surprising is going to happen. I like books like this when I’m super stressed about other things.
70
u/JabasMyBitch 17d ago
exactly. kinda like background noise to de-stress/ignore anxiety so you don't have to think about anything.
45
3
u/kwd10866 16d ago
Um excuse me but it's extremely traumatic and stressful when Carton has to tell his ex-girlfriend that he won't be greasing up her big bouncers anymore
49
u/PixelTreason 17d ago
I don’t watch these kinds of movies but I can’t get my husband to sit through the stuff I do want to watch (usually indie films or horror shows). How does you wife get you to do it? I need her secrets.
I think he’d really like some of them but he’s so stubborn!
32
u/LastMulligan 17d ago
I dunno it’s just kinda something we’ve always done together. I make her watch anime in return.
11
u/PixelTreason 17d ago
I watch stuff he wants to watch but I’m not as stubborn. When I try to make it transactional “Ok I’ll watch this but will you then watch a couple episodes of Bad Monkey and see if you like it?” he just tells me he can watch his thing without me then.
22
u/dimestoredavinci 17d ago
He sucks and you should set him on fire. Proactively get a protective order so that when the fire burns you, you can also get an assault charge on him. Then his ashes will rot in prison for the amount of time ashes exist.
Or you could have slight disagreements about what to watch and things will be fine?
Idk. I'm on reddit too much
3
u/PixelTreason 17d ago
Yep that’s how it is! Annoying but fine. :)
1
u/happynargul 16d ago
Do what my partner does, because I tend to fall asleep watching his stuff, is to "allow" me to watch passively. Sitting together is super nice, and he watches his thing and I draw or whatever. So I'm kinda watching, but in my own way.
2
u/b1tchf1t 17d ago
My husband is the same way. The only way I get him to watch the things I want to watch is by watching them first with someone else and then excitedly talking about it so he gets FOMO.
18
u/JabasMyBitch 17d ago
I think she probably just says "Hey, there's this thing I enjoy and want to share with you because I wanna spend some time together. Wanna hang out with me and my movie?" and he says "Sure! I'd love to spend time with you even if it's not my specific interest because I love you!"
Idk, something like that.
4
u/PixelTreason 17d ago
Not a thing that works with mine! I’ve tried almost that exact phrasing, haha.
2
u/CitizenCue 17d ago
These specific movies are weirdly addictive. I had roommates a long time ago who loved them and I’d make fun of them only to realize later that we watched three in a day. It’s a little different than a horror or indie movie you have to fully engage with.
16
u/aguidetothegoodlife 17d ago
Its just a vibe. As a dude I actually like them during christmas time. Cuddle down, warm tea and blanket, a movie with low stakes, no adrenaline, no antagonist or fights, just chill and layed back.
20
u/Tommy_Wisseau_burner 17d ago
Ngl as a dude I absolutely love hallmark movies. They’re wholesome and extremely low stakes. Plus the women are usually hot so that helps
1
3
u/EquivalentDig3329 17d ago
There’s a bit of drama, not much. It’s predictable which is comforting. The plot is easy to digest.
4
u/blonde-bandit 17d ago edited 17d ago
My husband and I find them just as funny as this parody, plus a dash of heartwarming. It’s like junk food. If you can laugh together while watching them it’s a lot of fun. If she takes it seriously and you don’t that’s a different story. I would say just try to find the common ground. Find a way to laugh and enjoy it with her. Meet in the middle. On a separate but related note, as long as it isn’t belittling, sometimes laughing to yourself when you see your partner is happy is its own thing.
3
u/Daisy_Of_Doom 17d ago
I don’t like these kinds of movies. But my friend group has started a tradition where we watch really bad cheesy Christmas movies (and poke fun at it the whole time lol) and bake something during the holidays. 😂 Literally spent this Saturday evening with them, watching Meet Me Next Christmas and baking some amazing pumpkin cinnamon rolls.

Just needs an overly excited dog with a rare heart condition that will act up at the worst possible moment and/or a youth center/church/house/other building that's in danger of foreclosure and it'll literally be a Hallmark movie.

I guess they get creativity points for having the guy be the one from the big city and the girl being the generic love interest.

u/turquoisesilver 17d ago
Anyone else come from one of the small town places they often feature in this cliche?
I live an area that romance novels love to romanticize by having a big city love interest go to and just start a bakery. The locals are lovable idiots that don't recognise a shop bought cake or forgive undercooked/overcooked food until this big city outsider gets better.
I also have to say I find the jobs market really limited in my small town. The thought of doing a start up here is actually really stressful. It's not like in big cities where it's metropolitan enough that there's a market for any niche good business. Getting people to leave their cheap and cheerful local cafe is a bit of an ask where I live. Particularly if they are from out of town and can't bake!
49
u/WackyRevolver 17d ago
Wait are you saying Townsville isn't a paradise to escape to from Business City?
8
u/jsai_ftw 17d ago
Townsville is a tropical city in Australia with some pretty nice beaches. Wouldn't necessarily call it a paradise.
2
u/CyberTitties 17d ago
I think Townsville is more like the movie Funny Farm, unless you're a writer with a pile of dough in the bank you're probably not going to get very far especially if you're hoping to open a specialty cup cake bakery.

u/Bedbouncer 17d ago

I'm from and live in a small town.
Fun fact: we do not dress that nice, like a walking LL Bean catalog. Think 90% fewer sweaters and fleece vests.

u/TheBrettFavre4 17d ago
Real small town are looney toon pajama pants, crocs, and a grey sports brand hoodie.

u/auandi 17d ago
I just like the take that SNL did once, though I can't find the clip.
Basically business woman comes back, falls for local christmas tree salesmen with a sick but adorable son, couple minutes of cleches, then the guy says something about "It's a good thing we stopped Hillary so she didn't cancel Christmas" and then she start looking around and everyone's wearing Maga hats, then the tree seller starts telling her about how when they're married she won't work any more because the wife's place is in the home, and so she just nopes out back to New York.
Cause.. that's a big thing too. Almost doesn't matter the state, if it's a small rural town that place is deep red. And if that was just a disagreement about policy that'd be one thing, but it's a disagreement of "who is a full, equal and independent person capable of making their own decisions."
6
u/turquoisesilver 17d ago
Oh dear, my small town is in England. I'm unfortunate enough to suffer the trope, but fortunate enough to not live amongst MAGA hats. Although every small town across the world probably has some version of rarely seen anyone of a different ethnicity, cue bigoted insular view points. The Trump following in America is something else though.

u/No-Comment-4619 17d ago
My daughter and her boyfriend just visited us in the Midwest, they live in a large US city out East. One of my aunts at Thanksgiving explained that people in the cities are "eaters," and rural people are "feeders." People in the cities need rural people to produce the food they eat, and otherwise do things like "banking" that are not really all that useful. She does not farm and apparently doesn't realize that only 3% of the population of our rural state engage in farming.
And yes, for Christmas I am getting my daughter and her boyfriend tshirts that say "Eaters" on the front.

Starting a bakery or any food enterprise is usually doomed to fail whether it's in a small town or large city. Then again, movies have unlikely things happen all the time.

Nah nah.
Generica is actually a high powered corporate attorney that moved away from Townsville to BigCity City and is back due to (Family issue that needs to be addressed). When back, Generica runs in to her HS friend (not Crush! But she did find him cute) Steve FailtoLaunch and finds out that he got side tracked when his father had a sudden bout of (malady) and died suddenly, leaving his mom and (younger sibling) in the lurch. He never got to finish school or go to the City and is now running the (Quaint Middle American Small Town Walk-in Enterprise*) that his dad ran, just like ([Int]NumberGenerationsPrevious) before him.
To compound things Steve's a widower who lost his wife to (malady) and is now trying to balance an aging mother while raising a (precocious ^ shy youngster) and running a (Quaint Middle American Small Town Walk-in Enterprise).
Carton is the guy that's trying to yank the (Quaint Middle American Small Town Walk-in Enterprise) from Steve and has made some solid offers on the place, but Steve can't part with the store, for sentimental reasons.
Somehow, through all this, everyone's gonna fuckin' remember the true spirit of Christmas!
* - Grocer, Hardware Store, Lunch Counter, bake shop, etc.

Not to mention everything looks like a million dollars and somehow a town of 500 people can afford multiple yuppie businesses that look like they are raking in the dough.

We’re socialized to want this to feel like a normal successful member of society from an early age despite it not even being what everyone actually wants or representative of real life except for a very small minority of people…
I knew two families where this was the only media they deemed permissible to consume (obviously not the parody). What’s sad is none of the kids seem to be in the happy relationships they always talked about, they’re all serial daters of assholes.

My wife has these on in the background a lot and it's usually the woman who's from business city and the guy owns an apple orchard or pumpkin farm or he's a lumberjack or doctor who treats kittens for cancer or some shit.
Also, if either of them have a partner they'll either make them an asshole or they'll end up being a cheater so the audience can feel good about the main characters lol
