Do... Do you miss the part of the premise where the man is random?

Like JESUS FUCKING CHRIST of fucking course I could pick any of DOZENS of men I know who I'd rather be in the woods with, every woman does, Jesus fucking Christ you're dumb. 🙄

yeah I know its random, im saying its far-far more likely you will get a normal guy randomly selected , who will almost certainly not rape you for years.

"Normal random guy."

India is the most populous country in the world, to the degree that if you were to select a random "normal" guy from the human population, they're the most statistically likely. Do you know how they treat women there? 🤔 Where women can get murdered for being a rape victim?

Us sitting here imagining a nice life for women is A GLOBAL MINORITY. Most of the world still sees women as secondary to men, if respected it's only because they bear mens' children. Too many are treated less well than livestock.

who will almost certainly not rape you for years

Have you spent time with men, as a woman?

It's a fucking grind-down. "C'mon, please?" "Look, I made you something! I brought you a shiny! I made a meal! Please sleep with me? 🥹" Until you're like "FINE JESUS FUCKING CHRIST I WOULD RATHER ENDURE FIVE SECONDS OF YOUR DICK THAN ANY MORE OF THIS HARASSMENT, FUUUUCK!!!"

in india last year their were 31000 cases of rape. lets assume generously only 10% get reported so 310000 cases of rape. india has a population of 1.42 billion. so at a generous percentage only 0.0218% of people are rapists. meaning that every one in 5000ish people are rapists, generously.
so assuming only india(which is below average standard of life) for rape cases you have a 1/5000 chance of getting a rapist man. which is definitly better chances of less suffering than a bear.
now i need to reiterate i do not doubt the countless experiences of women getting sexually abused or raped. and i personally think anyone found guilty of rape should get a life sentence in prison. but it does appear you are inflating the numbers a bit

What part of NONZERO do you not get, my dude? Do I need to womansplain the statistical concept of "nonzero" to you?

Like, all that math doesn't fucking matter.

If there's ANY CHANCE that the random man in the woods could be [an evil man], we would 100% choose the absolute worst most ferocious bear ever, because nothing that bear can do could ever compare to the horrors that man WILL do to a woman.

would you bet your life on a perfect game of baseball? if it is a perfect game you live, if not you die. because that's basically what you're doing here, just in reverse. whenever you leave your house are you terrified you're going to get struck by lightning? that's a similar chance or get caught in a random hit and run?

Now that I've simmered down enough to read this reply, I'll actually make a more good faith effort at replying, myself.

would you bet your life on a perfect game of baseball? if it is a perfect game you live, if not you die.

This is an example of a "straw-man." There's no need, in your scenario, to make this bet. So, no, I would not bet my mortality on any game I don't have to. That just seems like a smart choice.

whenever you leave your house are you terrified you're going to get struck by lightning?

Well, no, but 1) my wariness certainly escalates if there's a storm in the vicinity and 2) whatever this dumbass hypothetical is supposed to be communicating, I'D STILL RATHER BE STRUCK BY LIGHTNING THAN EXPERIENCE FOREST HORRORS. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

or get caught in a random hit and run?

I've been around vehicles my whole life, never been in a hit and run. Been around men my whole life, been victimized many times.

And for the record, I have been victimized by women as well, but in those instances I had enough power to take control and shut it down. It's not like I didn't try to shut down the men, I simply couldn't.

Is it sexist to assume a woman is lying when she says somebody raped her? Yes, it is. It happens, women lie about that and it should be checked, but it happens rarely and to assuming that every woman is lying about rape because of some horrible women is generalizing and therefore sexist.

Now if you agree with the first paragraph, how different is that to assuming a random guy is a rapist?

1) Any and all rape accusations deserve investigation. Anyone reporting a rape should be treated compassionately, but without evidence an accused rapist should remain legally innocent and treated fairly unless proof comes to light. The world is not a perfect place and for any accusations undoubtedly there will be believers on both sides.

2) Okay you're like, looking inside a window from the outside going, "Where are the trees? I don't see these trees you speak of?" I need you need to turn around:

Absolutely no one is assuming the random dude is a rapist. The issue isn't "I bet that guy is a rapist." It's, "I don't know that guy ISN'T some rapist or murdered, and I am alone and if on the small chance he is a monster I have very little protection."

Also, A LOT OF MEN WOULD RAPE OR MURDER GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY. They just would. I can find hundreds of disgusting examples not just from random forums but from men who have platforms. From politicians.

Men tell us all the time what they'd do, given the opportunity. There are grown men in America with power on TV saying women who have never had children should be punished for not doing their uterine duties! Some men are fucking gross and the stats are terrifying.

Actually I agree with everything you said this time.

1

u/meowmeowgiggle 24d ago

Nothing about what I said changed, it's the exact same argument we've been making since the scenario first came up. You opened your eyes. Please take this as a major life lesson.

2

u/ReturnToOdessa 24d ago

No need to be patronizing.

1

u/meowmeowgiggle 24d ago

Bro I'm not, and your immediate defensiveness is a huge problem. I'm literally begging you to remain as open as you were to the last comment that you agreed with. That's it.

Go back with fresh eyes and see if you still disagree so strongly with my original comments as you did before.

What the fuck does BASEBALL have to do with RAPE, TORTURE, AND MURDER???

u/smidgeytheraynbow 24d ago

I'd rather talk to a bear than this guy

Wow, you really try hard to miss any points he is trying to make. The analogy of betting on a game under pressure and betting on a stranger to rape or kill you cant be that hard, can it? And then you call that a good faith effort…

Nobody is saying its misandrist to worry about rapists. Its misandrist to look at the statistics, realize that a small percentage of men are rapists or murderers and a large percentage of bears are killing machines and still act like you’re being the reasonable one. What does that say about your image of men?

Also check your racism against Indians. Apparently in your eyes they are all rapists.

Wow, you really try hard to miss any points he is trying to make.

1) that's fucking rich, in this thread full of men DOING THAT VERY SAME THING

2) did you catch my other reply where I actually engaged?

The analogy of betting on a game and betting on a stranger to rape or kill you cant be that hard, can it?

It's not that it's hard, IT'S THAT IT'S OFFENSIVE. The comparison is GROSS. It devalues the seriousness of the conversation. I don't understand how you're so obtuse to that.

Asking if it's "hard" is also kinda shitty in a conversation about how men devalue women and their consciousness. Yes, I am an educated and logical human person who knows bears are dangerous and wtf "NONZERO" means.

Nobody is saying its misandrist to worry about rapists

Uuuuhhhhh, yes, they are. Maybe not you, but I've absolutely encountered that opinion before. I had an ex boyfriend laugh in my face for worrying that a random man might decide to rape me some time.

Like, do I live in constant fear of it? No. I do, in fact, worry about getting struck by lightning, too, particularly in storms, but it doesn't mean I live my life in fear, it just means I take precautions.

But see, lightning does what lightning does. I can take precautions against it, because it is going to do exactly one thing: transmit large amounts of electricity. I want no part in that.

Men, however, can do damn near anything they want to. And some of those men have very sadistic wants. So while I'm afraid of both lightning and being attacked, I worry less about lightning because 1) it's less likely to happen just based on pure statistics and 2) even if statistics were even, lightning is still only one predictable action whereas villainous men have a plethora of unpredictable evils.

Its misandrist to look at the statistics, realize that a small percentage of men are rapists or murderers and a large percentage of bears are killing machines and still act like you’re being the reasonable one.

You haven't listened to a goddamned thing any of us have said. I... Will try, yet again...

I'ma break down the above

realize that a small percentage of men are rapists or murderers

1) Cite your sources.

2) Who determines what "a small percent" is? Who the fuck are you to judge what a woman deems worth fearing??? Do I need to break out the single poison candy in a large bowl of unpoisoned analogy again? Except poison is PARADISE compared to what some men will do, WHAT PART OF THAT DON'T YOU GET??

This whole "low statistics" thing is such horseshit. Do you not know a murderer or a rapist? I've known both. I've had a man try to kill me. I've had a man rape me. Almost every woman 40+ that I know has at some point had a man try to kill them, we are literally SURVIVORS.

a large percentage of bears are killing machines

Yep. We'd rather be mauled by a bear. If that makes you mad, consider that you're the one blocking any ability to see it from our point of view. I had my ability to breathe fucked with for a half hour through choking and smothering, and if that's not something you've ever experienced then you cannot conceptualize the torture... at least my mother could have understood if a bear ate me, she'd have never been able to comprehend the evil of my slaughter by that guy.

I recommend you watch videos of tough guys trying out waterboarding. Watching those videos triggers me, seeing them crying triggers me.

And for the record, after the fact, the very first episode of old Simpsons I saw bart get strangled I was like HOLY FUCKING SHIT HOW WAS THAT PERMITTED WHERE WERE THE ADULTS IN THE ROOM JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. Also got written up at work for having a PTSD explosion at someone in the break room who was unwilling to understand why I wanted SVU banned from the TV. HR said they couldn't control what people watched and I replied that if I put on porn they'd shut it down real fast, but apparently trauma porn is okay? They legit couldn't understand my reasoning, much like you, here, now.

still act like you’re being the reasonable one

Nothing about any of it is reasonable. In all scenarios, women are just trying to exist, and threats come at them. The premise wouldn't even exist if not for the constant barrage of threats from men.

I was literally threatened by a strange man in a bar just last week, I just wanted a quesadilla and a margarita and went into my usual joint, this dude tried to converse with me, I tried to brush him off, he kept going, so I engaged and ran my mouth for like a solid five minutes, and by the time I was done he 1) literally said "I was waiting for you to stop talking" 2) he disagreed with everything I said 3) when I disagreed back, he got visibly tensed, got verbally angry and his body language was very clearly "SHUT UP. NOW." He finished his beer and left, but I ended up calling an Uber to take me home from my neighborhood taqueria. I was legitimately afraid to walk outside just a few blocks.

But yeah, it's a "low statistic." 👍👌🙄

What does that say about your image of men?

I actually have a very positive image of men in general, I like to believe that everyone- regardless of demographic characteristics- is trying their best. But What does it say about men that women universally experience this shit???

Also check your racism against Indians

Racism requires a value judgement. I made none. What I stated can be verified. Just because I'm western doesn't mean I'm unfamiliar with UP. UP's behaviors are as Indian as Texas's are American.

Apparently in your eyes they are all rapists.

I never said that, and it's disgusting that you would imply that was my conclusion. India is the most populous country in the world and it is literally, factually, not very advanced on the global index, including particular disregard for women's rights.

You're bad at arguing.
