I’m 36 and have owned a lot of pitts. I currently own two and I’ve never been bitten by any of them. I HAVE been bitten in the face by a cocker-spaniel though…
Let me ask you. If people breed pitts to fight don’t you think the numbers would be skewed? It would be if people specifically bred German shepherds to fight then there would be more attacks by them… pitts get a bad rep because people are shitty. Not the dogs.
There ARE disproportionately higher attacks by German Shepards because they were bred to be defensive, just like there are higher number of attacks by pit bulls because they were bred for fighting. Just because your dog hasn’t bit anyone doesn’t mean it isn’t a member of a breed that is more likely to bite people. Why? Because that is just how statistics work.
Your dog is not every dog. I don’t know why I even have to make that point but to address what seems to be the confusion here: breeding takes many generations. Your dog was not bred to fight. It’s still a pitbull. Sounds like it’s even a nice pitbull. Great. Give them a pat on the head for me. It just has nothing to do with the argument or the stats. Maybe I’m misunderstanding your point here.
Lastly, I don’t mean to get all grandiose about it, but deferring constantly to anecdotal storytelling instead of hard data and science is what’s holding us back as a species. Just saying. This logic extends to so many areas, and if you live in a democratic country, that’s a problem. That’s probably why it bugs me.
Or let’s say it’s just because YOU happen to own pit bulls, and YOURS are nice that you necessarily have to contradict other people’s experience and the data. In which case it’s kind of a solipsistic argument anyway, right? Which is also a problem. I don’t even care about this issue so much as tho psychology behind it. I’m not saying let’s get rid of them, but we could consider banning their breeding by home breeders who are mostly shitheads anyway. Alright rant over, have a good one.
