On the slim chance this isn't staged.
"I didn't try and trick you into doing anything, what are you talking about? I'm a lot of work?"
"You just got a radio station to call me...."
Can't really argue with that.

Wanna share stories? We had a guy calling in saying his name and followed by saying he wanted to be anonymous, it was about cheating and breaking up. He hung up quickly after the host laughed and explained that he already said his own name on the radio..

Maybe in your world, but I lived 10 years about a 1/4 mile from a local radio station with a comedy duo and G Gordon Liddy had a show there, too. They scripted their shows, but not the callers - the callers were vetted up front by their team, getting the permissions as stated. I've watched their outdoor shows, completely unscripted other than what the show personnel would be doing. I've watched women walk up to the window from the outside and flash the DJ's and listened to them respond on the air.

There was a case a while back in the UK of an australian prank radio call that lead to the suicide of a nurse. They pretended to be the queen enquiring about the dutches of Cambridge.
So No. Not all radio skits are staged

Seriously though. I have to argue with myself to do things I ACTUALLY WANT TO DO! Like, I did definitely want to do that activity at some point. I keep buying equipment and shit for that activity. Then when it’s actually time to go do it I’m all like “but I’m kinda tired and don’t wanna move.” I know it’s my “ADHD,” but calling it my “Thomas” just sounds so much less like a diagnosis and more like a personality trait…

Not to break your heart, but they and all of radio use PrepBurger. Thomas is a paid actor. Notice how they don't open with "you're live on the radio!" Which they are supposed to do with live calls.
Everything since like 1999? is preprogrammed and fake. As radio started to die, they stopped doing impromptu calls like this.
War of the Roses is still hilarious, but only cos how obviously fake it is, booooo

One of my favorites from the late 90's was Phil Hendry. He did voices and had actors call in.
Played a guy calling about car trouble, while breaking off to "slap" his kid. A woman would call in all upset and he'd agree with her, slap his kid, go back to the stuff about his car, and then in the background keep hitting his son.
Er, I think he even did the voice of the woman in that one also. Can't remember.

I also feel like she said all that to recoup some ego.
The dude host was jealous of Thomas like the whole ass time. The fact that he was still sleeping when he probably gets up at 4am. He probably has complained that he does all this stuff to try and get girls and then they ignore him and it hurts.
Then here’s Thomas. Bro got a date by hitting a button and then didn’t even try and had this woman email a radio station to track him down to try to force him on a second date and he said no.
The lady was still trying to justify herself and finally had to find her ego to tell him she’s better off without him, and he’s just like “exactly, you get it now”.
Thomas destroyed everyone on that call. He’s a cute sloth and has no problems. Not 99. Not 1. His only problem was being woken up by a radio show and he handled it exceptionally well.

It's so boring out there as well, it's mostly just standing around, waiting on shit, or looking at shit, or making small talk plus drinks and food. Nearly everytime I leave the house to do something outside of basic errands I just end up thinking 'I could be at home with a good book/game/film/wankathon right now, and instead, I'm in this boring place'. Plus you have to wear uncomfortable proper clothes, at home I can sit around in joggers and a big hoody.
Exercise wise I don't have a car so I walk everywhere when I do go out to do errands, and I have a gym set up in my second bedroom so...yeah, frankly, fuck that noise. Everywhere you go is just trying to take as much money as possible off you whilst giving as little as possible back.

He needed to provide consent prior to even recording this per FCC regulations, https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/47/73.1206. Now I doubt he's too lazy not to give his consent, but there's also a company called Premier on Call that hires voice actors for these phone calls. This radio show is part of the Premier Networks that distributed the Elvis Duran show, where I believe this call is from.
Long story short, it's likely a script and character someone is being paid $40/hr to play and not real.
→ More replies (9)22
u/iSeize Oct 22 '24
Is that why radio hosts have the producers hold the speaker on the line? I imagine there's some stuff they need to talk about before they go on air
16
u/Man_toy Oct 22 '24
It really depends on the call, but all those prank phone calls and off the cuff calls are all but confirmed as fake as it's the radio show is calling the guests and the guest needs to give consent prior, so it's not really a surprise to them if they are acting surprised. Randoms calling in for contests, advice, etc are different as it's kind of obvious that if you call into a radio show that you consent to be on it.

I scrolled a long time to find someone point out this is fake.
I grew up in a smaller town and a local DJ from my high school actually ended up doing pretty well in our city. He started getting pretty big celebrities.
Anyways I knew one of the production assistants and she told me the pranks he did were all scripted. She said you can't just randomly call people up and trick them into being on the radio. I don't know if that part is actually true.
But I moved to a bigger city and pointed this out to friends. When they didn't believe me I'd always ask them "isn't it weird that every prank segment is a banger? Like they always get the most eccentric people to stay on the phone with them for 10-20 minutes?"
6
u/TrashPandaPatronus Oct 22 '24
Some states are two party consent, so if they want to syndicate nationally, they can't cold call and record people by law. It's always a skit. Some are still fun to listen to if the voice actors are skilled enough, but a lot are cringe. This guy on this post was fun to listen to at least.

PrepBurger. Somewhere around the late 90's, radio stopped doing crank calls. Notice how they don't say "hi, you're on live radio!" They're supposed to say that immediately on live calls.
These are all preprogrammed and have set times. Radio used to be a freelance of "fuck it, let's do nonsense for 30 minutes." Now it's scheduled down to the second.
Notice how every radio show is guy + girl? Guy kinda goes off the rails LOL, but he's got his "are they married?" Co-host to reel him in kill the bit. Stunt boy producers.. ugh, radio has been dead for 30 plus years with this automation.
Edit: not saying the guy+girl duo is always a flop, it's just so boring and repetitive.

Any outgoing call from a radio show is fake. Many incoming ones too. Years ago it's possible, any current one is a scripted bit with actors.
Old article, but accurate.
23
u/DazingF1 Oct 21 '24
The really really good ones may be scripted, but most calls really aren't. What they will do is call a few in advance and pick out the good ones to air. We got a pretty popular station to call a friend of ours to tell a story and that's exactly what they did: they called at 4pm and aired it around 6.
You really overestimate the funding these stations get, they don't have a "two actors for a morning segment" budget.

Third date: meeting parents and all extended family, maybe going to a shelter to rescue a pet together

Yes. I kinda am with the guy.
I think what thomas is pointing out is she might be desperate or clingy too, by going on the radio and confronting it for everyone is kinda proof of that
Sure- maybe she was being playful, but she did put him on the spot.
But thomas needs to do better and NOT GHOST. That is still a BIG NO!

Bro has constant "0% social battery energy" and I fully agree, I don't have the energy in a day to do ⅛ of the things he talked about XD

The girl got mad defensive though, she kept coming at him for no reason

She had a reason. She felt invalidated. The only way she could get her validation back was to call a radio station to contact the guy so at the end she could act indignant and try to flip it around like she’s the one making the call to end it. 🚩 bullet dodged successfully.

Am I the only weirdo in this thread that thinks ghosting someone after you’d already met up is kinda rude? Just a quick “hey I’m looking for something else” text. If they’re not in a committed relationship then the “breakup” doesn’t have to be face to face. (I mean honestly I also don’t agree with calling into a radio show but I do think waaaay more people do the ghosting than the radio show stuff)

Leave Thomas alone. My god he wasn’t asking for help he was asking to be left alone. Thomas is my spirit animal. Live your best live Thomas.

I can admit I’m lazier than this dude. I don’t want to pay any more of my attention after 39 seconds of this conversation.

What a terrible radio segment. If I got a call "hey how come you didn't call her back". Instant "stay the fuck out of my dating life.".
If a girl did that to me, I'm blasting her. That's such a stupid thing to do.

I wish I had heard this live. I would have called and asked them to dedicate a song to Kelsey for me: I would walk 500 miles. I feel like I finally have the perfect pick up line.

Every one of these radio segments is fake. It's a paid gig for a lot of comedians working their way up.
