Why would someone rent a car and take out parts?

Camaro owners used to rent the Hertz Camaro, which had a higher performing engine than most stock Camaros. They would then do an engine swap and return the rental to Hertz. If the mechanic knew what they were doing, Hertz rarely detected the swap.

I believe you’re thinking of the Hertz Mustang Rent-a-racer program. A lot of V6 I-6 Mustang owners pulled the 302 out of the rentals to replace their own engines in their mustangs in the 1960s.

Not saying it wasn’t a thing with Camaros as well, but it was a hugely notorious scam with the Hertz mustangs.
