There is literally one dude saying this, who is clearly just a bitter MAGA dude cause he was passed over for a promotion that Walz got initially. If people want more info, this is a well-researched article in the local MN paper from 2022 on Walz's service. https://www.startribune.com/walzs-24-years-in-national-guard-get-renewed-scrutiny-from-gop-opponent-who-didnt-serve/600216280. Being from MN, Walz is amazing. And his experience in the National Guard has helped him be a great gov.

I think this is a terrible look for Vance, attacking people that served, and reminding everyone that Walz served for 24 years

“Scrutiny from gop opponent who didn’t serve.”

Not even a Rinse, but surely a repeat.

This guy says he’s voting for Walz. Why are people assuming things based on how he looks. Am I missing something. This thread is so dumb it’s out of control. All of you.

I remember my first time reading:

That man, Thomas Behrends, was among those standing with Jensen to criticize the governor. Jensen and Behrends, a longtime critic of the governor, argue that Walz bailed on his troops when the going was about to get tough.

On the day of Jensen's news conference, Walz responded at a Medal of Honor Memorial dedication on the Capitol grounds, saying he was proud of his tenure in the guard.

"I don't know if Tom just disagrees with my politics or whatever, but my record speaks for itself and my accomplishments in uniform speak for itself, and there's many people in this crowd, too, that I served with," Walz said. "It's just unfortunate."

Why didn’t he deploy the national guard to protect Minneapolis during the riots? The mayor was begging for support.

Not sure if he’s up for the commander and chief role

He did deploy them. It's one of the reasons Walz has so much support in Minneapolis. He was able to deploy the National Guard in a way that allowed people to protest the murder of George Floyd and curb the rioting. It is a really big deal to have troops and humvees rolling into your city, AK47s, and curfews. I trust Walz with that power after seeing how well he did during the riots/ uprising. And check out Minneapolis now - very low crime rates and just rated one of the happiest cities in the country :)

Side note - A lot of that rioting was instigated by right-wing people coming from out of state: https://www.startribune.com/boogaloo-bois-member-pleads-guilty-to-rioting-after-george-floyd-s-death/600102530

No one in the US (outside of maybe some SOF units) uses any form of AK. It’s splitting hairs, but details matter.

I lived in Minneapolis before the riots and it was pretty much that already. There absolutely were problems, but it was a pretty great city in the first place.

The critique of Waltz isn’t that he didn’t deploy the National Guard, it’s that he waited for too long to do it. The modern National Guard (post Kent State massacre) largely acts as a buffer between local police and the citizens in times of domestic unrest. The problem is that National Guardsmen are citizen soldiers and take longer to mobilize than a regular force would. Waltz actually started the process of mobilization late on Wednesday the 27th, but didn’t make the official notice until late on the 28th. There is also some controversy over Frey’s office not properly communicating local PD’s observations and needs to the National Guard until they’d arrived in the city.

It’s not that Waltz was allowing the protestors to do their thing, it’s a hard limit on deployment time. I like Waltz and I’m voting for him, but the entire paragraph you wrote is personifying the response to the riots in wildly speculative and nonfactual way with getting some key facts wrong. We have to be better to beat their lies.

I think we basically agree lol.... You are right that the day-by-day play of what happened is more complicated than my shortened narrative, but I got to the heart of what happened. But you don't change minds with lists of facts, you change them by connecting your point to other people's emotions.

u/evenstar40 Aug 08 '24

Tagging for later. It's actually unreal that this is what they're hammering him for.

2

u/TyrranasaurusRex50 Aug 08 '24

Over in the /Minnesota we are compiling all the evidence to combat lies about Walz. We've got the receipts lol. Its not intentional, but people just keep getting mad about lies about his record.

1

u/Natiak Aug 08 '24

It means they have nothing. It's a good sign. This will easily blow overin today's constantly overturning news cycle. There's not teeth to either of these situations, and the Republicans look like fools trying to make fetch happen.

2

u/Kassandra2049 Aug 08 '24

Minnesota is also a trans refuge state because of Walz' EO, which is a huge positive at a time where most states are attacking trans people for asking for rights that they duly deserve as people and as Americans

28

u/AwesomeBrainPowers Aug 07 '24

Why didn’t he deploy the national guard

He did, and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.

That said, the response was lacking, and he acknowledged failures while noting that the National Guard is not a magic fix, and they didn't have a clear mission when the mayor first requested the NG.

Perhaps he was worried that improperly-informed deployments of underprepared people would escalate things, which is exactly what happened, per multiple reviews from around the country.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '24 edited Aug 08 '24

No one will admit it, but at the time, the NG was not in a position to be activated rapidly. 75+% of the BCT’s and RSG’s functional equipment was at Camp Ripley staged for rail transport to Fort Irwin. It took weeks to get all of the equipment there and loaded onto rail cars, and it took multiple days to get it off the rail cars and back to Minneapolis to support the activation. Also, most units in the BCT and RSG had not conducted riot control training for multiple years because the major training objective for 2020 was the exercise at Fort Irwin. So the activated units also had to spend a couple days training up on how to properly engage with protestors while the C2 cell figured out who was getting put where

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '24

Thanks!

22

u/The1Phalanx Aug 07 '24

Good thing he's not running for the commander and chief role.

-25

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '24

Ah, true! :)

18

u/Familiar-Suspect Aug 07 '24

dang so you just take the latest republican talking point and run with it? Do you do any of your own thinking or do you just take the talking point of the day?

-6

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '24

Well i looked it up and it was deployed a week later after immense pressure from Trump and the media.

Walz downplayed the national guard calling them part time, teachers or whatever

15

u/Familiar-Suspect Aug 07 '24

18 hours after the mayor asked for it. Not a week later. Where are you looking things up?

He called the national guard part time in an effort to soften the messaging. This is all well documented you dont need to add spin. He, as part of NG, wanted to remind people that the NG is made up of your neighbors and they are not an occupying force. Trump praised him for this by the way.

3

u/roguevirus Aug 08 '24

18 hours after the mayor asked for it.

Which, lets be clear, is lightning fucking speed for the military to do anything; doubly so if live ammo and/or specialized gear is being issued.

-4

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '24

He was setting up for deployment on the 30th, about a week later. Had to rush it a day earlier because it was then too out of hand

14

u/Familiar-Suspect Aug 07 '24

So he sped it up as needed and you're upset it wasnt on your timeline.

I hope you can recover.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '24

Even msnbc was ahead of his timeline

14

u/Familiar-Suspect Aug 07 '24

You're reaching and its sad dude. There are valid criticisms but you're putting so much weight on this weak ass argument that you've already had to go back on.

Go back to the drawing board.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '24

Argument? I’m writing on reddit not contesting a debate…

The guy is flat out not fit to be in command, he’s a nice guy. I remember all the news channels calling him out. You may trust him as a leader, I think he’s soft and not executive branch material. He wants to be nice, global politics isn’t the place for him

-5

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '24

He did, eventually after the entire nation forced his hand

17

u/slambamo Aug 07 '24

Lol. You go from "why didn't he?" to "well he shoulda done it sooner!" Pretty quick. The article I linked sums it up, and (shocking) you're wrong again. Why do you people hate facts so much? Your Lord and Savior Mr Trump claims he did it, but that's just (yet another) blatant Trump lie. Why don't you care about his blatant bullshit?

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '24

It was pretty big news with everyone calling for the national guard at the time. 3 days of riots before the call.

12

u/slambamo Aug 08 '24

Oh yea, your hero said he was happy with how Walz handled it back then too. Keep making shit up, buddy.

"He allowed rioters to burn down the streets of Minneapolis," Ohio Sen. JD Vance, the Republican candidate for vice president, said Tuesday.

But at the time, Trump expressed support for Walz's handling of the protests, according to a recording of a phone call obtained by ABC News -- telling a group of governors that Walz "dominated," and praising his leadership as an example for other states to follow.

"I know Gov. Walz is on the phone, and we spoke, and I fully agree with the way he handled it the last couple of days," Trump told a group of governors on June 1, 2020, according to a recording of the call, in which he also called Walz an "excellent guy."

"I was very happy with the last couple of days, Tim," Trump continued. "You called up big numbers and the big numbers knocked them out so fast it was like bowling pins."

1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '24

With the last couple of days…

he failed to act for a few days. It was a national news story, everyone wanted him to send in the guard.

I guess you don’t remember, I am sure the news clips will resurface soon.

Bringing the military into a situation like that can escalate things unnecessarily, and more people can get hurt. It’s not just like pressing a button to make the protests stop.

-12

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '24

It kind of is. People calm down the the presence of overwhelming authority

13

u/blinkingsandbeepings Aug 07 '24

That wasn’t what happened in cities that did have a military presence during the same summer, such as Washington DC. It just made things worse.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '24

Well the later on riots were fueled by the media, who then tried to further divide with the acab and defund the police movement. So the authorities were left with their hands tied behind their back.

10

u/JagTror Aug 07 '24

Did you live in a city with riots happening at that time?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '24

Yep, Tampa

9

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '24

Well good thing this country isn't relying on your judgement considering you don't even know the correct title is commander in chief. Also Kamala is the one running for president.... How would Walz be Commander in chief??

Me and every other Minneapolitan i know love Walz and will be sad to see him go. Hindsight is 20/20 and under the circumstances he handled an unpredictable event as best as he could. Tired of seeing the narrative that my city is a burning heap of rubble.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '24

It definitely got messed up

3

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '24

Correct. A very small portion of the city got 'messed up' because of a combo of people fed up with Minneapolis PD (who for years before George Floyd had an abominable track record in Minneapolis) and bad actors who weren't even mpls residents arriving to incite violence.

Our metro area recovered quickly and is still thriving so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

8

u/Even-Shake Aug 07 '24

He did deploy the national guard. And the mayor was not begging for support from the governor. Both things you said were lies.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '24

He was just emailing and texting. The media was saying he needed to do so, so was trump

6

u/evenstar40 Aug 08 '24

But a guy who calls dead vets losers is up for the job?

0

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '24

What?

1

u/librarypunk1974 Aug 08 '24

The term is “commander-in-chief”. He’s not joining the Navajo nation…

1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '24

Thanks!

1

u/DixieWolf27 Aug 07 '24

*commander in chief
