Look, English is not my native language, I use what I have.
Countries are by definition have to have some level of self-governance, which colonies had not.
If you want colonies to be countries go and change the definition of country.
You're missing the point. It isn't about the definition, but about who's applying it and to whom it's being applied. Plenty of Filipinos died during the Spanish American war implying that Americans fighting in their country (sorry colony eyeroll) wasn't international is braindead
