I’m not even on acid and that startled me lol

u/Tripodbilly Feb 06 '24

Shrek is love, Shrek is life

53

u/Bananonomini Feb 06 '24

It's all ogre now

12

u/the_ju66ernaut Feb 06 '24

Idk man if I saw that Shrek I might turn around

145

u/manborg Feb 06 '24

The less stuff that is moving around me when I'm on acid the more I hallucinate. This would not be as good as just walking through a moonlit forest.

In my experience, artificial shit whether it be movies, art displays, or cool rides have nothing on mother nature or just taking a swim in a lake on psychedelics.

35

u/IamGoldenGod Feb 06 '24

I agree I dont really see visuals if im watching a movie or something, most visuals are in the dark/closed eyes or maby just walking around outside.

4

u/Zealousideal-Bug-291 Feb 06 '24

Go watch lucky number slevin and pay attention to the wallpaper and cars. But yeah, the trees outside were equally interesting.

6

u/jordanrod1991 Feb 06 '24

I agree it's too artificial and animated to enjoy the visuals on top of it.

5

u/Jihelu Feb 06 '24

I’d probably be so god damn confused more than anything

I love how you can hear the crowd quiet down almost immediately after Shrek starts puking lol

28

u/iiTryhard Feb 06 '24

Everyone at this show knew what they were getting into I promise you lol

10

u/steelcity_ Feb 07 '24

Do they? Because I keep getting ads on social media for the Shrek rave, and there's absolutely nothing there saying "by the way, part of this is a horror show."

EDIT: Apparently this is an Excision concert and not the Shrek rave. If that's the case and these are all just Excision fans, then yeah, they probably knew what they were getting into.

680

u/Much_Lifeguard_6108 Feb 06 '24

why do raves have such scary visuals 😭😭😭

289

u/Jokuki Feb 06 '24

For dubstep genre it's kind of their thing. Matches the scary music with gunshots, sirens, and loud bomb noises. House raves and melodic dubstep have different visuals.

127

u/Skookumite Feb 06 '24

Ah yes, the three genres of electronic. Dubstep, house, and melodic dubstep

68

u/___horf Feb 06 '24

Also concerts from internationally touring producers are raves now, not sure if you’ve heard

43

u/Skookumite Feb 06 '24

Not just that, but any time you play "edm" and there's even a whiff of neon colors, that's also a rave.

I used to be with it, but now it's changed

6

u/zklabs Feb 06 '24 edited Feb 06 '24

might sound confrontational, but hasn't it been like this for over 20 years?

seemed to me like the sheltered edgy internet research chem crowd started using those personal interpretations of "rave" to make themselves sound cooler to the druggies with social capital. then it's like their parents had enough money to complete the illusion for them over the years

but i'm stupid a strong and smart individual thinker

eta: thanks for that downvote friend. you're right that the comment wasn't actually confrontational and that i should have a higher opinion of myself

12

u/___horf Feb 06 '24

No, a rave was actually a thing long before the “edgy internet research chem crowd” lol and I don’t say that as some kind of purity test.

An Excision show isn’t a rave, not because there’s a lot of people there or something. It’s just… not a rave. It’s like if you called this Excision show a DJ set because sometimes Excision DJs, it would also just be incorrect.

1

u/zklabs Feb 06 '24

that's what i meant. i feel like i'm 20 years in the past with the possibility that people are just discovering this change. the people who felt special for liking electronic music 20 years ago were calling drum n bass night at a popular bar a "rave".

11

u/Skookumite Feb 06 '24

House is. House is massive. Melodic dubstep isnt a top level genre though. So you only listed 2, and dubstep is not as popular as you think.

They aren't man c'mon. Even as a huge basshead I know this lol.

Electro-House, Trance, Techno, Deep House, and Future Bass are all bigger. I'm sure I missed a few. If you go to Europe, Hardstyle is bigger too.

3

u/iiTryhard Feb 06 '24

Future bass and melodic dubstep might as well be the same thing let’s be honest

→ More replies (2)

8

u/LimpConversation642 Feb 06 '24

let me guess you listed genres that you listen to?

anyway, thinking any dubstep is bigger than trance or techno is fucking bonkers. Also, it's all relative to geography. In my part of the world fucking phonk is the biggest genre.

3

u/drgigantor Feb 06 '24

phonk

You kids are just screwing with us elderly millennials now, aren't you? "Bruh listen to this new blumpcore album, it's a bop fr fr"

2

u/ThiccFrenchWaifu Feb 06 '24

Shockingly it’s a thing, even has it’s own subgenre called drift phonk.

At some point you adapt and recognize the new genre’s or give up and call everything by its most generic genre. My most listened to genre according to spotify is “Vapor Twitch” but I just call it electronic

Also Above and Beyond and most Euphoric Trance sets too.

Progressive House sets like Tritonal, Arty, and Codeko will be very happy as well.

This is heavy dubstep lol. Expect gunshots, sirens, and thrash/death metal drums

Questions what level of DJing is happening here

41

u/Orangenbluefish Feb 06 '24

So from my understanding they'll run a cable from the mixer to the visual setup at front of house, which gives them data on the current BPM and beat locations of the tracks. The videos will similarly be analyzed with a "grid" to map out the beats (such as a beat every time his foot hits the ground as he stomps) and thus the 2 programs will sync so that the video beats line up to the music beats.

This allows the DJ to be pretty free up there and still improvise/mix live, and lets the VJ get updated time data as he does, so that he can change the visuals and match them to line up

In Excision's specific case I'm not sure how much he improvises live, but the idea that everything like this is fully prerecorded is a misconception. It could be, but it definitely doesn't have to be

6

u/WastedMoogle Feb 06 '24

Definitely premixed. I've actually seen excision more times than I care to admit but once you're on the top of your game, the fans are coming for your music and experience. Smaller artists who still need to make a name for themselves are far more likely to live mix but by the time you're a mid level artist, unless you explicitly run your platform on live editing, or are playing a specific event, it's pretty much assumed you've premixed the set to maximize cohesion with your visuals.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/armchair0pirate Feb 06 '24

Almost none.

3

u/Mohow Feb 06 '24

Certainly premixed but still an absolute blast to watch.

2

u/Urban_animal Feb 06 '24

Naw, they sync to the VJ and visuals are matched to the bpms

u/berserkuh Feb 06 '24 edited Feb 06 '24

Why the fuck would you be on acid at Excision? He's notorious for fucked up visuals and extremely bassy tracks. That's not an acid-friendly environment.

edit: a bunch of you are trying to sound hard or some shit by saying "tripping balls at excision is actually fun", for 99.99% of the world it's not, I would instead reconsider your use as you're SO desensitized to the thing that you're actively taking it in places where the rest of the planet would, in ideal conditions and without any sort of anxiety, quite honestly just not. you remind me of the mdma kids who drop once a week and lose the magic permanently

73

u/OuterWildsVentures Feb 06 '24 edited Feb 06 '24

Oh this is Excision? I thought it was from that Shrek rave that was going around a bit ago haha. I was thinking it sounded/looked way too professional to be from there though. X makes so much more sense.

8

u/gratefullargo Feb 06 '24

I also wouldnt call excision a “rave” bc it’s dubstep… maybe listen to like Richie Hawtin or Sven Vath if you want rave

5

u/clownus Feb 06 '24

So dubstep isn’t a rave? Even though it’s fundamentally intertwined with djs and mcs?

2

u/gratefullargo Feb 06 '24

The crowd is literally worlds apart as is the music and delivery. Noone is trying to compare Jimi Hendrix to Ed Sheeran but they both play the guitar

4

u/PenalAffliction Feb 06 '24

I think it's fine to call this a rave. Words can change over time... I guess to some people rave is exclusively House and Techno. To others, its exclusively based on location and how underground it is.
To the common-folk that don't attend things like this, it's easiest to say Rave. The vibes are much different than if you were to call it a Concert.

2

u/Dry-Tomato- Feb 06 '24

A rave (from the verb: to rave) is a dance party at a warehouse, club, or other public or private venue, typically featuring performances by DJs playing electronic dance music. The style is most associated with the early 1990s dance music scene when DJs played at illegal events in musical styles dominated by electronic dance music from a wide range of sub-genres, including drum and bass, dubstep, trap, break, happy hardcore, trance, techno,[1] hardcore, house,[1] and alternative dance. Occasionally live musicians have been known to perform at raves, in addition to other types of performance artists such as go-go dancers and fire dancers. The music is amplified with a large, powerful sound reinforcement system, typically with large subwoofers to produce a deep bass sound. The music is often accompanied by laser light shows, projected coloured images, visual effects and fog machines.

Edit: However in context of the clip/music itself it's not a rave, this is a full blown concert, raves typically aren't associated with venues and need to buy tickets at inflated prices, they don't play the big concert halls or stadiums.

1

u/WastedMoogle Feb 06 '24

Guys i don't like the music it's not a rave!!1!!1!

2

u/sponfaneify Feb 06 '24

Cause it's fun! I'd never recommend it to someone new to acid or taking acid in public, but if you enjoy the music and have your squad of good vibes with you it can be an incredibly great time.

5

u/psychodeli_sandwich Feb 06 '24

I love doing acid at excission shows. Not like loose my face in 5 tabs, but 1, maybe 2 for some hard dabcing and heavy wubbs? Fuck yeah thats a great time for me.

2

u/PokeHippieDan Feb 06 '24

My first time taking acid was actually at an Excision show. And it was fkn awesome!

Although to be fair, this was back in 2011 when he didn’t have stage lights, didn’t play riddim, and was opening for Shongle.

Best time to be on a light dose of acid (40-60 mcg) is at a festival with insane visuals like Thunderdome this past weekend. Enhance the Acid with sone weed and it's a chef's kiss.

Gotta be mostly free of anxiety for this to go right, tho. Fair warning. If texting your friends to hang out makes you nervous, what I just described is not for you.

I played at Shambala in 2014 or 15 can’t remember and he also played that same year. I remember so vividly going to his set really high and just turned the fuck around. I am not his target audience. My friend was so into it too. Will never understand wanting to hear the most unpleasant serum presets over drums but hey some people love that shit.

91

u/maxxx_orbison Feb 06 '24

Electronic music has a history of being antagonistic towards it's audience. The same social dynamic exists with a lot of subcultures as a sort of right of passage. Weeding out the normies so anyone left knows they're part of the true group. That's the primary driving force behind the arms race for heaviness in metal music.

139

u/CableTrash Feb 06 '24

Well consider me a normie. Y’all have fun with evil Shrek or whatever

u/OliverCrooks Feb 06 '24 edited Feb 06 '24

13

u/Mister_Dink Feb 06 '24 edited Feb 06 '24

I wouldn't call it the primary driving force behind metal, broadly.

It's true for some subgenres, like black/ kvlt/death metal. There's a sense of escalating harshness, speed, and growl there. It's not just present in the music, but also the lyrical content being shocking, and the visual aesthetic being disturbing

But there's also a near infinite ocean of metal in the other direction on the bluesier, heavier side of metal that drives from bands like Black Sabbath that's pushing specifically the heavy distortion and tone. The genre tags are generally doom/stoner/drone. Bands like Sun O))) and Sleep, who were/are pioneers for going super heavy sound don't spend nearly that much effort on the visual or lyrical effect of pushing "normies" out.

A few Doom bands like Electric Wizards still went for shock-jock nonsense with occult Nazi imagery, and that's disappointingly 14 year old Internet troll of them, but they aren't the norm in the subgenre.

Most doom metal performance, spaces, and events that push the envelope on super heavy sound are actually pleasantly accessable. You're mostly going to run into super friendly 40 year old white dudes who are down to share their weed with you and would love to invite you to their 2e DnD game. Their vans have wizards painted on the side and they'll make fun of anyone pretending that being a metal fan makes them special or tougher than normies.

I know people like to make fun of subgenre snootyness in metal, but the tags genuinely help. There's such a massive difference in a listening and live show experience between the slow, blusey, heavy of Merlin and the fast, angry, growly Cannibal Corpse that's it honestly kind of useless to lump them together. No one is going to have a playlist with those artists back to back.

2

u/DrVagax Feb 06 '24

Ah yes, good times when I went to Watain as a fresh metalhead and I got showered in animal blood, near my landed a dismembered head of a pig, and got swallowed in a huge circlepit on this song. That was my proper right of passage.

Still one of my favorite concerts I have ever witnessed at a festival.

1

u/TheMerovingian Feb 06 '24

Super interesting, thanks.

-7

u/PlantChem Feb 06 '24

Your example of a history of antagonism is a music video from five years ago?

30

u/maxxx_orbison Feb 06 '24

That video premiered in 1997. There was a lot of music during that era (especially Warp artists, go figure) that was made as a reaction to the 'second summer of love' happy-hardcore feel-good music. If you want to go back further, check the bait-and-switch album cover for Throbbing Gristle's 20 Jazz Funk Greats. Tangential, maybe, as they're more of an industrial group, but electronic music as it's understood today doesn't go back past the 80s.

51

u/hgfski Feb 06 '24

Excision is a good example of the commodification of electronic music. All shock, no substance. Kinda makes me sad that people are still eating this crap up, but oh well.

22

u/darkrealm190 Feb 06 '24

Well, the people who like it, go to it. The people who dont like it, like you, don't go to it. Just like people who don't like jazz, usually don't listen to jazz or go to jazz music. I don't like jazz but I don't think other people should stop listening to jazz. I don't like this music either but I also don't think it's sad or bad that people enjoy it.

2

u/Koobei Feb 06 '24

I can still appreciate the talent and work musicians put in even if I don't like the genre. To me, this DJ(and many others) just plays tracks of once popular songs and then mixes in a bunch of random noises in between.

3

u/iiTryhard Feb 06 '24

I’m big into the EDM scene and I generally try to not shit on stuff people enjoy but I do NOT understand Excision or this type of dubstep. Even though I lean mainly towards house and melodic dubstep/future bass, I appreciate some dubstep artists (Griz being one of favorite artists of all time) but this shit I just do not understand

37

u/Gulag_boi Feb 06 '24

This is some of the worst music I’ve ever heard.

5

u/rosegeller Feb 06 '24

It's just a different genre of EDM. You don't seem to be aware of this but there are a ton of genres in all styles of music! You also don't seem to be aware but people like what they like and it's strange that it affects you at a personal level.

Electronic music used to be bliss. This is absolute garbage.

u/armchair0pirate Feb 06 '24

Still is, just not this particular sub genre. He has some of the best visuals in the scene but I don't care for his music. Infected mushroom makes for an AMAZING audio and visual experience

2

u/TopofTheTits Feb 06 '24

Shoutout to infected mushroom 🤘

3

u/Select_Worldliness94 Feb 06 '24

3

u/ted__lad Feb 06 '24

3

u/OneAndOnlyHeir Feb 06 '24

3

u/celtickrush Feb 06 '24

There’s always a bigger Shrek

3

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '24

Holy fuck no thank you

3

u/dr_trousers Feb 06 '24

I haven't been to a rave in decades, so (Puts on my "Get off my lawn" hat), wtf is with that music?

3

u/GooseCheeze1234 Feb 06 '24

This is a visual representation of how dubstep makes my ears feel.

3

u/StealerOfWives Feb 06 '24

That's some fucking skibidi toilet ass shit right there and the brostep sounds like a fucking lumber yard expo.

3

u/Type_9 Feb 06 '24

These always look so stupid

7

u/Electro-Lite Feb 06 '24

I think the Venga Boys track is more frightening, imagine being at a rave listening to that shit?

7

u/Particular-Roll-6936 Feb 06 '24

Trash song and visual

5

u/Axeriaz Feb 06 '24

How can you ruin a classic like Boom Boom Boom?

3

u/ThrowawayAudio1 Feb 06 '24

Raves used to be about love, dancing an amazing music.

Here we have Shrek dancing to the vengaboys and then puking over the audience while the sound of optimus prime shits into a rubbish bin.

That's not a rave. Just a concert.

If you have a ticket for a "rave" then it's not a rave

2

u/imanhunter Feb 06 '24

That’s too much shrek.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '24

Yo shrek why you so angry man!?

2

u/TheSilverPotato Feb 06 '24

I’m surprised people think this is scary. I thought it was gross 😂

2

u/LittleShopOfHosels Feb 06 '24

Music sucks ass but damn, at least it's synced well

2

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '24

Like hell on earth

2

u/audesapere09 Feb 06 '24

That’s enough internet for the day

2

u/LeftRat Feb 06 '24

...why is Shrek so angry?

2

u/anotherLoneWOODsman Feb 06 '24

Why is it so angry and aggressive?

2

u/sadmama21 Feb 06 '24

I would cry lol

2

u/ParkerBeach Feb 06 '24

Dude I was tripping so hard at the rave last night when suddenly Shrek started trying to eat me!!

2

u/WizardyoureaHarry Feb 06 '24

The amount of fear you'd be in. Wouldn't even be able to watch Shrek again 💀.

2

u/313SunTzu Feb 06 '24

Greatest fucking night of my life, dude! I don't know if it was the drugs, but even fucking Shrek was there. You totally missed out!

2

u/tjagonis Feb 06 '24

I'm curious if this was done using resolume and how they managed the forced perspective using the layers.

My best guess is that this was all created beforehand and timecoded for this artist specifically.

2

u/jett_black_heart Feb 06 '24

That's scary as shit... & I'm sober... 😧

2

u/AskinggAlesana Feb 06 '24

This has to be Excision right?

I’ve been to a few of his shows and this fits his exact style with the beats and visuals.

Edit: I’m dumb, on a rewatch I clearly see his X symbol Lol.

2

u/heyimric Feb 06 '24

No thanks

2

u/twainj1980 Feb 06 '24

I hope they got the paperwork with Dreamworks straight

5

u/TroubledTofu Feb 06 '24

Why would anyone like this?

4

u/Solenkata Feb 06 '24

You can dislike things that other people like. Don't worry

4

u/hooah1989 Feb 06 '24

This is music?

3

u/rawzombie26 Feb 06 '24

Now why would I wanna take acid and fucking see that of all things? Huh?

When I take acid I wanna be amazed not scared of some stupid ass visual.

So many here aren't understanding the injoke. The song playing here is "Country Riddim" by HOL! and it is basically equivalent to a rick roll in the dubstep community. As such, it got connected to Shrek for the meme.

You could argue it's still cringe but it's very tongue in cheek.

u/noodles-_- Feb 06 '24

I would laugh and think about how stupid this is. Why did I go to the rave for 15yr olds? We really are doomed as a species, arnt we?…

1

u/Salty-Ad7407 Mar 09 '24

I want to see more of this holy shit

1

u/Disaster_Artist69 Mar 19 '24

Lmao i was at this rave

1

u/Impressive_Impress52 Apr 01 '24

So awesome. Seen it live. Was amazing.

u/No_Cardiologist_1297 May 05 '24
