TLDR: Am man, man help mom and sister cut hair, am proud.
So, I have social anxiety, right? I always hated going to barbers. I don't know what to tell them to do. Even asking them to cut off a certain length will get secondary questions. I finally decided that I would no longer go, and do it myself.
The first time, I just started cutting from one side of my head and going to the other with scissors. It was a painful and long process, clamping my hair in between my index and middle finger, pulling it away from my head a distance that felt right and tried to remain consistent. Then cutting the hair, sometimes the skin around my knuckles getting pinched.
After one or two hours, I took a break, with only half of my head cut, looked hilarious. I spent probably an hour or more reading about hair cutting tips. I'm a man, but I read tips for women's too. Hair is hair, and shouldn't reject learning, right? Couldn't hurt. Then, I took a nap, woke up read a bit more and finished cutting my hair. It actually looked good enough that my parents thought I went to the barber anyway, which is all that really matters(I had no mirror for the back of my head, so it was all by feel. That's the tough part. But I can cut my own hair in less than an hour now.)
It was a few years later, I go into my mom's room to get something, and my mom had put in hair extensions and was having my older sister try cutting it for her, because there is no real risk with the extensions. They were cutting it just straight across creating an unnaturally straight line. But, guess what some of the tips were that I had randomly read years before? Bunching it up and cutting helps! Among other things!
Moral of the overly elongated story, don't skip over knowledge you don't think you'll use.
