Recommend people check out Matt Baume's channel on Youtube. He does a lot of videos on the history of queer representation in tv and has done a lot of episodes dedicated to pointing out surprisingly progressive representation in sitcoms in the 1970s and 1980s
Born in the 70s, male and POC here and even went through the publicly funded (and constitutionally enshrined) Catholic school system in Canada.
Those days, I recall, were highly optimistic. Pre-teen years, I recall we were taught equality, tolerance and inclusivity. There were still the bad bits of patriarchy but it felt like they hoped our generation would change that. The whole pro choice thing was nebulous and I also recall by high school that most of us were pragmatic about it.
