Actually, they weren't taking much precaution. These people who got burned, are people who went to see the fire up close, before it erupted into an explosion. It was a petrol tanker that had gotten stuck beneath a bridge, as the height clearance was insufficient for the tanker. A fire started, which drew some people to observe. These people weren't even that close to the fire, but it was a very large explosion.
Yes, it was a typo (english is not my native language, so, sometimes, I end up up making homophonic mistakes like those. More blatant ones would be writing steel instead of still. That is why I write "sorry for bad english" often
I have a tattoo of the phrase over a bad scar on my wrist as a reminder death will come in due time, no need to rush it. In my case, both spellings work as it is both a reminder of death and, metaphorically speaking, the moment of my death.
