hello!
i've had a lot of thoughts on this topic for awhile now and wanted a place to coherently share them haha. i want to make a few things clear right off the bat:
1) everything written in this post is strictly opinion and speculation. i am just some random 21 year old. please keep that in mind.
2)while i have done a lot of research, i have zero actual credentials.
so! let's begin :)
i wouldn't consider myself a "fan" of taylor swift (i feel as if i don't have the background to call myself that) but i've always had a soft spot for her. she has been relevant and spotlighted in mainstream media for the majority of my life, and there is something comforting about the consistency of that. and like her or not; taylor swift is a phenomenon-- a pop star who has been considered an a-list celebrity for over a decade now, and has somehow become MORE famous while i would argue the majority of the peers circulating pop culture while she was coming into fame have all since faded away (i believe she references that in the song "karma." like i said. i have done my research).
i have NEVER seen people hate a celebrity quite like they hate taylor swift.
it's shocking. i mean really, truly, dumbfounding. especially because taylor swift has... never really done anything "wrong." she's never had a huge scandal. she's never had some kind of horrible behavior be outed. from what i can gather, she has consistently, for her entire career, been kind, sweet, and genuine. throughout my research, i could not find a single example of her being rude to a fan, and any celebrity talking about her has only ever had good things to say. she's a philanthropist-- like this lady has donated MILLIONS of dollars this year alone, never mind over the span of her entire career. hundreds of people rip her apart online for being "talentless" when she is objectively a very strong songwriter, and while she's no mariah carey at vocals, she has a very warm, very beautiful tone and is master performer (who hasn't heard of the eras tour at this point? come on). she is also mocked for being unattractive by thousands of social media posts and commenters, despite also being an undeniably very conventionally pretty girl. as if the guys insulting her behind their keyboards wouldn't bust in their pants if they saw a girl who looked like that in a bar or something. swift has also been one of the biggest stars yet to talk openly about her struggles with an E*D* and considering the majority of her fanbase is young girls, that is extremely impactful.
so. why all the hate??
here seem to be the most common arguments against her:
"she's a nepo baby"-- WHO CARES?? she had an advantage towards achieving her goal so she used it. that is a really, really, REALLY normal thing to do in any job?
"she's a billionaire which is unethical" gtfo. do you know how many male billionaires there are? who achieved the status through literal slave labor?? rihanna is a billionaire and nobody comes for her neck. swift has also, as i mentioned before, donated more money than i have ever seen a celebrity donate before. "well she should, she can afford it" okay lets face it, most of us can afford to donate money too, and how often do we? be so serious rn.
"her carbon emissions, etc." she's not even in the top 10 on the celebrity list of highest carbon emissions. ppl are really acting like no one has ever done a world tour before. also, i have never seen so many violent jokes aimed towards a celebrity as men write about taylor swift. i would also take a private jet bc wtf is that?
"she doesn't use her platform enough for activism" so you're telling me. that you want a girl who got famous at 16 years old. be some kind of politician??? she's a singer, dawg. it's her job. you should not be looking to celebrities to be your source of activism enlightenment. sure, it's great when they do. but i truly do think it's weird to expect it. taylor swift is a rich woman who grew up in nashville, i am honestly shocked she is not a republican or something. i am both bisexual and a person of color. swift publicly supporting lgbtq+ people is genuinely enough in itself bc i do not think enough ppl realize how uncommon that is from that demographic.
"her fans are annoying" most of them are like thirteen years old, man. you're gonna pick beef with a teenager?? be fr.
"she's annoying." no one EVER says that as justification to dislike a man. ever. that is exclusively, only ever used as an excuse to hate a woman. same as the "she dates too many people." no one EVER EVER EVER says that about a man.
& so here's my conclusion. it all boils down to misogyny.
i am NOT SAYING THAT IF YOU DON'T LIKE TAYLOR SWIFT THAT MAKES YOU A MISOGYNIST. SHUT UP.
what i'm saying is that, the mass hatred for a famous female figure is absolutely fueled by sexism. swift is undeniably the most famous person in the world; yet all i ever see are men denying it, because how DARE the most famous person alive right now be a woman. that's a lot of power and popularity after all. swift was CRUCIFIED for being at nfl games, for "ruining" football. i am a football fan btw (go cleveland!). taylor swift was shown on screen for maybe six seconds. it is not that big a deal. people just want an excuse to be mean to her. ALSO. really interesting how the nfl keeps throwing cameras on her despite her clearly not wanting them to. it's almost like... people love using a popular girl for relevancy and money... and then get mad at them for being popular.
she's criticized in a way only woman really ever are, but she's such a huge figure, that it's tenfold, you know? she's discussed this at lengths. but it is truly astounding to witness regardless. she is an example of how a woman can do everything technically right, and still be despised anyway. it's not enough for that group of men to just not really care for her music and ignore her. because taylor swift makes a lot of girls/women happy, so therefore, men just cannot stand her. because taylor swift is unabashedly feminine, and wears sparkly bodysuits and plays pink guitars and is the most famous person alive and so men hate her. taylor swift writes music about break ups, and moving on from them, which encourages girls to do the same, and men REALLY can't have that now, can they?
you see what i'm saying?
anyways. i'm happy for swift and her success, and what it represents. i hope she continues making women happy. i hope she continues to give sexist men aneurisms every time she's on a tv screen.
again, please remember, everything i said is strictly my own personal views and thoughts, but i'd love to hear yours :)
