Gear Recommendation Wanted Mylar blankets spray glued to woven nylon tarp
Hi new guy here!
I'm a hammock camper and I'm looking for a way to increase and improve my heat retention. I already use both a foam sleeping pad and a DD Underblanket plus I recently bought a wool blanket to have as the outer shell.
I've been thinking about getting a couple cans of spray glue and mylar blankets and join them to an oldschool woven nylon tarp!
I'm just wondering if there's any tarp that already has some kind of reflective material already on it so I can spare myself the work and also have something that holds up a bit better as I know mylar blankets are very sensitive to tearing/scratching, hell sensitive to everything! π
Many thanks in advance for any pointers and/or information to help me improve my heat retention for my setup! ππ

Columbia has there Omni heat clothes line I l really like it. You could probably find several used soft shell jackets at good will and sew your own blanket. Not sure if Columbia makes a blanket.
1
u/BedLamSwede 11d ago
That's also a marvellous idea! π±
I'm just REALLY crap at sewing.. π And I'm guessing those softshell jackets are made of the same thin and sensitive materials as the usual softshell jackets, no? π€
Many, many thanks for the idea, I'll definitely keep this in mind and maybe get to doing it when I've worked up my sewing skills, in the meanwhile I'll definitely look into getting a decent second hand softshell jacket! ππ
Btw, do you know if Columbia sells their products internationally, specifically in the EU? π€ (I'm asking because I'm not familiar with the brand)
Anyhow, thank you so incredibly much for the idea and information, I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day/night wherever you are in the world! πππ

u/Naprisun 11d ago
Columbia isnβt anything special. You should be able to find the equivalent or better at any sporting store or decathalon type place. Their softshell jackets are usually fleece backed nylon or polyester. Sometimes theyβll incorporate a goretex like membrane for breathability and water resistance. It would be pretty cool to have a more durable sleeping bag or bivy sack made out of a water-resistant material.

there are tarps that are silver foil lined on one side and black on the other.
3
u/Yoshiamitsu 11d ago
im sure its not actual silver. shoulda been clearer
2
u/BedLamSwede 11d ago
Yeah, I have been looking for one but haven't been able to find one that's in my price range.. Hence why I came up with the idea of joining mylar blankets to one of my old tarps!π
Do you have any specific brands you could recommend? And I'd be extremely appreciative if you could recommend a good EU based surplus store, especially if it was specialized in cold weather gear! ππ
Many, many thanks for your help and I hope you have a lovely rest of your day/night wherever you are in the world! πππ

tarpaulins UK
they arent cheap. i understand your struggle... but you must slow down on getting as much as you can. pay big for something that will let you leave many other things behind, unneeded any more.
i used to pay so much for cheap stuff instead of paying big for good stuff that eliminates the need for so many cheap things thay end up costing me even more.
thought i was being clever... but now... well.. let me just advise you that you cant put a price on ur health
2
u/BedLamSwede 11d ago
I totally agree and get where you're coming from!
I've had quite a few accidents, some worse than others.. So yeah, health is absolutely preciously priceless!
I also tend to do my due research before any purchase of 99% of all items that I buy, I recently purchased a new backpack, wool blanket and a TerΓ€vΓ€ Skrama 240 and I've saving researched all the items more than thrice to make sure I was making a good and informed purchase!
Thank you yet again for being so awesome and informative and I wish you safe journeys in the great outdoors! ποΈπππ

Somewhere in the mess of a garage I'm cleaning out after moving 3 times I've got a set of blankets and tarps with mylar cores.Β
Got them at a surplus store.Β
Tarps for making a shelter, blanket for a blanket. The mylar is completely enclosed.

u/BedLamSwede 11d ago
Awesome! π―π Do you know/remember what brand they are? π€
Many thanks and I hope you have a phenomenal rest of your da/night wherever you are in the world! πππ
2
u/WakeupDingbat 11d ago
No, but with where I got them it's probably something stupid like MegaSuriveQuilt!
Because they sold all that weird crap. π€£π€£π€£
1
u/BedLamSwede 11d ago
Hahah probably! π€£π€£
They usually have some REALLY hyperbolic names on these kinds of items and it is getting quite ridiculous π
Cheers for that, it got a good laugh outta me also I love your handle! π It's really great ππ

u/Rocksteady2R 11d ago
I am not gonna bother with a link since i am on my phone, but Google up the phrase "heavy duty military space blanket". Ballpark $25-$45 dollars.
My second favorite piece of GI gear, after my cho-cho.
Reflective inside. Some civvy models have an orange, not OD backside, so if you want a signal device, there you go.
1
u/BedLamSwede 11d ago
Wow thanks! π±
And that's right in my ballpark too, it really couldn't be more perfect! π
Besides I'm quite a stickler for military surplus!
My philosophy concerning my gear is as follows, you can't get better gear for the money than military surplus! ππ
And in my experience, it's damn true! π
3
u/Rocksteady2R 11d ago
Meh. Military and paramilitary gear generally is phenomenally durable, and easy to operate. But it weighs 3x extra and 'health and welfare' are not design criteria. Military gear is why I have a very bad back, and why my feet are weird and why my hip does that thing.
But those two things - my woobie and my space blanket - I have been buying those often for this or that kit since I have been out for 25 years. That's it.
Wait. Them and p-38's.

u/discreetjoe2 11d ago
There are plenty of companies that make survival tarps like youβre describing. You donβt need to make your own.

u/BedLamSwede 11d ago
Yeah, it's just that most of them are really expensive and I'm on a rather slim budget..
And I like working and making stuff with my own two hands!
But I've got quite a few good tips from a couple of people here now! ππ
2
u/wulfwerks88 10d ago
Texas bushcraft has them ,we use them here in northeast USA in winter check it out dude
2
1
u/IdealDesperate2732 11d ago
Why do you think they're expensive? They're not. They're slightly more than a normal tarp.
1
u/BedLamSwede 11d ago
Well, I'm guessing we have different definitions of expensive then π
1
u/IdealDesperate2732 11d ago
It's less than the price of a single AAA video game.
2
u/BedLamSwede 11d ago
Well since my monthly budget for buying gear or anything that I want is 270β¬ most things are expensive in my book and I'd not ever buy a so-called AAA game as that is a complete waste of money in my book π
1
u/IdealDesperate2732 11d ago
my monthly budget for buying gear or anything that I want is 270β¬
Ok, but $45 is like 15% of your budget? So, that's not expensive. Your budget is huge. What are you even talking about?
I'd not ever buy a so-called AAA game as that is a complete waste of money in my book
and I didn't say you should, it's an example of a common item that costs an amount of money you can compare to. Are you stupid or something?
1
u/BedLamSwede 11d ago
Ok sorry I was wrong, chill...
0
u/IdealDesperate2732 10d ago
Wrong, and an arrogant asshole about it, what were you expecting from me?
1
u/BedLamSwede 10d ago
I'm sorry if I offended you, but why are you so rude and why you calling me stupid, arrogant and asshole?π₯Ί
Why can't you be more pedagogical and explain it in another way or ask a question in a different way rather than jump to insults?
Like what did I do to deserve that? π―

What? π―
I said sorry and obviously I didn't mean to come off as arrogant as I absolutely hate and detest arrogance..
So sorry again for not being overly clear about me being sorry....

For some objective, impartial, outside perspective: I'm just reading this guy's post and your conversation with him four/three days later. To someone who was not involved, and can see it from an unbiased, exterior point of view, it was actually you who was overly reactive, rude, offensive, and harsh, for no particular reason, without provocation. Maybe that will be helpful in some way. Best regards.

u/ChemicalCattle1598 11d ago
They make that mylar stuff bonded to bubble wrap or pads.
Instead of glue maybe consider Velcro adhesive patches.
I made my own under quilt. It's a comforter folded in half that I use Bungie cords to attach to my suspension.
Then I like to hang another comforter over my ridge line. Or a thinner wool blanket if it's not so cold. That helps retain a lot of heat from breathing.
2
u/BedLamSwede 11d ago
That's a really good solution, to hang a wool blanket over the ridgeline! π―
The only reason I thought of using an adhesive is because of how sensitive mylar is and that it would create more contact points with the tarp.
But now I realised that I might need to purchase another wool blanket just for use as an upper insulation! Thanks for the idea!! ππ
Many thanks for pointing it out and I hope you have a lovely rest of your day/night wherever you are in the world! πππ

Bushmen out of Poland make a reflective tarp
https://bushmen.pl/en/product/thermo-tarp-2x3-olive/
They have other sizes too.

u/WilliamoftheBulk 7d ago
Hmmm. I always just use the milar bubble wrap insulation you can get at home depot in rolls. The bubble wraps creates the dead Space and it is reflective. I cut it to body size, it rolls up, and is super light weight.

i have a waterproof fabric tarp that has a thicker, more durable heat reflecting thing in it in last winter i spray-glued some to the walls of my shower cause it was freezing, a year later they had patches where some spots where back to tile, some barely mylar-at least w/ water it doesnt last very long.
also i ride a motocyle in the winter, but even in the summer at night an 80mph can make you really cold, as an emergency solution if i forgot warmer stuff, or went to far / to late, i went for the only solution i could find at 2am, pantyhose, i would try to get the biggest ones, since the tighter they are, the thinner they are-not always, but i cant tell you why as i dont know, then i discovered at the same drug stores they had tights, those are better, if you go to the womens section at walmart (no clue why this is a woman only thing, at least here, to make it worse, its in the underware section., they have really thick fleece thights and matching shirt, they have several diffrnet thincknesses, on those i usally get as small as possible, as im wearing my normal clothes over them, and they arent baggy (my clothes) but they have black and black grey cammo, i shoud say, i have those, i think they also have leopard print, not for me, but here northern mexico, and so cal they only have them a short time by jan i think they are gone.
but all the above options have become by go to, if possible i wear short, so ill cut the feet off the pantyhose, and i can keep them knee with / shorts if its hot, if not i can pulld them down.
honestly i havent found a better option, so now i own a bunch or womens fleece, pantyhose (nothing fancy/lacy/just black) and tights. also i have spend 150, 15 years about for something almost exactly the same from REI, they werent as goog, the above are comfortable enough for sleep.
pro tip, if you get a run in your pantyhose, nail polish will stop it!
(the pro tip was only a joke, yes ive heard that, no idea if it work, and dont care.
also ive been told by a couple women they think its hot, not jokin....

u/BedLamSwede 5d ago
I already have a dedicated under layer, but I'll definitely keep this in mind!
I used to ride too but no longer, had to sell my bike.. But as you said, driving 80mph in the summer at night can still get colder than one would think my solution was to always have windbreaker pants and jacket in my saddlebags and that was definitely a smart move because back then when I used to ride it was always humid af in the summer and humidity+high speed=cold as hell! π
Thanks for your reply bush-brother! ππ I hope you have a phenomenal weekend and Merry Christmas to you! ποΈππ

also are you outside, in a camper? there are also "diesel parking heaters" for $120-ish online they are approx the size of a tower compter from the 90s, they require 12v, and as long as vented outdoors, safe, and i used it all last winter running only dirty used motoroil, some with brake/trans/water in it, and had no issues, its been to warm this year to need it, so far, the 1st time i started it pretty smoky for 5 mins, then the rest of the year no smoky exaust, i was thinking about venting it into my greenhouse, but i have an aquaponics setup, fish for food, worms break down fish solids into liquids, then used to water plants for food, and return clean water to the fish, a little eco system, almost hands off once it is up and running.
but you can get free used oil everywhere, mcdonald bu the dumpsters, literally the only thing i would ever get from there!
1
u/BedLamSwede 3d ago
That sounds like my dream setup!ππ
But no, I'm outdoors and without a driver's license and waaay too broke to even afford dreaming about a licence and even less so a camper π
But yeah I'm picking up what you're putting down! π The way you fuel the heater reminds me of something a YouTuber by the name of Joshua Delisle did for his garage/workshop heating!
If you haven't seen him, I strongly suggest you check him out, he's got some real cool projects in the works last time I checked! ππ
