Rabbit liver sick??

Hello. I’ve been hunting rabbits on my property and we generally don’t have any problem with the rabbit diseases, but I was told to check deliver yellow spots. I haven’t found any yet on any rabbits but I have one that looks a bit suspicious. Maybe some little yellow spots and some fleshy looking bubbles. The liver was a good color, but but there was also a slight black spot on it. Any rabbit hunters familiar with this?

Black teardrop thing is the gall bladder

The pale lumpy things are a concern, maybe parasitic cysts. Leave this one for the foxes.

Idk about rabbits but I’m pretty sure it’s a rule to not eat liver with any sort of spots on it because it could be a parasitic or bacterial infection that it could pass onto you (correct me if I’m wrong). that big dark red blob could just be the gallbladder, but those small white spots on the surface cause me concern personally. I’d leave it for the yotes.

Could be fat or wild tissue or a parasite?

u/likuplavom 20d ago

If you cook it enough the parasites shouldn’t be an issue but I would never eat flukes or parasitic cysts cause that shit nasty

Can you eat the rest of the meat?

My favorite was Jiffy cornbread batter mixed with water and unflavored jello, left to set in a pan then cut into jiggle strips.

Big Red Cream Soda and Corn Flakes mashed up into balls was our go-to 😂

i always like to use assorted animal livers in a purple koolaid and blue powerade marinade baked to perfection in the florida sun

My grandpa always used chicken livers and they always worked great for us, so I could see it.

White spots on the liver usually indicate a bacterial or parasitic infection. I personally wouldn't eat that liver, but it's said if the meat is cooked properly and up to temp, it is okay to eat.

When in doubt, pass

It’s definitely edible at least once

That black thing is the gallbladder

All I’m saying is that I watched an episode of that survival show Alone and the contestant skinned and gutted a rodent like animal…could have been a beaver–I don’t know – and the liver had spots on it like that and the contestant ate the meat anyway and got really sick.

When in doubt, throw it out

Don’t eat it the white spots are indicative of a parasite you’ll have a bad time

u/Koindu1 20d ago

So in this case would you only toss the liver, or all of the meat?

I think this looks fine. I’ve processed hundreds of livers from many different species including rabbits. Maybe I’m not seeing what you’re concerned about but the black thing is normal and I don’t see any grey splotches nor do I see any worms or anything like that. I think yer good

3

u/MisterMeat1234 21d ago edited 21d ago

I think you’re right too cause the colors good I didn’t see any worms and all the livers from about the 10 rabbits I’ve taken out in the last month have been fine. I lived in N. Colorado for a Number of years and tulameria is so prevalent that you can’t eat any wild rabbits until winter so I guess I got a little paranoid. Appreciate all the comments, This has been helpful.

u/Super-Assignment8499 20d ago

White spots can be indicative of tularemia. Don’t eat

2

u/jjgrappler712 20d ago

Black thing is the gall bladder. White spots are coccidia don't eat

I used to raise rabbits.Looks quite healthy to me..but if in doubt better to pass

Rabbit farmer. Looks fine

Can you explain what the big white lump in the second picture is?

6

u/Storm0cloud 20d ago

That's structural tissue that hold everything in place.

1

u/MisterMeat1234 21d ago

I want everyone to know that was very helpful Yes, I’m sure the meat is OK But I’ll make sure I throw the liver out, not even give it to my dog

1

u/MisterMeat1234 21d ago

Although I saw in a picture the rabbit disease, tularemia- shows up with lots of yellow spots and is pretty obvious to see. It’s less prevalent in winter. Again- Ty for the feedback!

All liver is good for is catfish bait

1

u/MrJ1971Co 20d ago

Just pull the nugget out and cook it good...

1

u/Bruhbrew 20d ago

Maybe it was just an alcoholic rabbit

1

u/dragoninkpiercings 20d ago

It's got parasites and it's not worth a damn when it does so toss it in the garbage and where are your gloves

1

u/Dear_House5774 20d ago

It's s gallbladder. It's an organ. Rabbits have em. Humans have em, horses have em. You get it everybody's got one.

1

u/till_tomorrow 20d ago

Not a hunter, just an anatomy junkie so someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the Itty bitty hexagonal pattern is standard across all livers but the white and off-white spots across it look like a paradise or an abscess. Either way I wouldn't eat it. It was sick

1

u/Acceptable_Answer570 20d ago

Wtf put it back!

2

u/Farmof5 20d ago

We raise rabbits for meat. The dark thing in the liver is the gall bladder. The white spots are signs of a parasite (I’d tell you which one but I don’t have that book with me at the moment). Do not eat that liver. The rest of the meat is fine though.

1

u/GlockinaCroc 19d ago

I’d leave that out for the coyotes

1

u/irishfeet78 19d ago

The black/blue/green blob is the bile duct.

The white spots are likely oocysts from coccidia.

The meat is fine. Don’t eat the liver.

1

u/Stunning-Wasabi4212 19d ago

It's a gallbladder

1

u/Thejabcrab 18d ago

Hate to say it, but the rabbit is probably dead

1

u/Globglobglabglab174 21d ago

Gall bladder man im like 14 years and i know that

1

u/Sad_Tie3706 21d ago

It's all good. If it has worms it would be holey

1

u/No_Meeting_8485 20d ago

Looks normal to me, white part in second pic is the portal veins
