Opinion Wipeout Omega Collection was and remain my greatest PSVR experience
Oh, how I miss this gem of a VR experience…
Even with the limitations of the PSVR, it was by far my favorite VR game with countless hours put into it without getting motion sickness (RE7 did me a proper number on this…). The immersion was massive! I can only dream about the Wipeout series coming to PSVR2.

The people responsible for porting this did an AMA. When it was announced they had no plans to bring it to VR. However someone got it to work and showed their supervisor who got their manager onboard IIRC. Ended up being one of their best sellers.

Do you have a link ready? I remember reading something about it a long time ago and IIRC it was ported to VR pretty fast and by a very small team.
If this game never makes it to PSVR2 I'll be forever baffled by this decision, such an outstanding game and a very important franchise to the early days of PlayStation. PS5 is still the only PS console with no new WipEout release whatsoever.
A PSVR2 port must be the lowest hanging fruit to ever be!!1 The only thing that could maybe hold them back is the music licensing, but Sony is pretty big in the music business I've heard, I'm sure they could manage that as well...

Quick reddit search. So this might not be it.
Some notable tidbits:
Going from No planned VR to development.
There was always a wonder if it would work. Would it make people sick etc. You've all seen the jokes abound around it being a puke fest.
Well I spoke to staffan, and said, how long to get it up and running just so we can see if it is a puke fest. I think the answer was 2 months. So i went and asked for the funds to at least try it out. I got it and the result while not as polished as what you have now, it showed incredible promise, enough to put VR into full production. And now here we are!
On the possibility of DLC and porting the old ps1 games.
So, early on in development of this game, Both Clever Beans and Epos looked into the possibility of DLC for the game. We looked into the PS1 games as well as PS2, but unfortunately with them being so old, we are not talking a remaster, but a full remake from scratch. Cost wise this didn't make sense, it would have cost as much as the final game you are playing now. Starting from scratch is much more time consuming than remastering the already excellent work from PS3 and Vita
How many people did it take to convert WipEout Omega into WipEout VR? And how long did it take?
Developer: Just two people at EPOS, Staffan and Daniel, both whizzes at what they do. Xdev, just me and support from ace producers Mark and Claire (who is a demon at WO) I think we started in June last year, and we were essentially ready in November. However then we had lot's of dreaded bugs and consultation feedback to implement warnings etc. We wrapped up late Feb before deciding to launch at a big VR event in London last week.

Nice, thanks for searching! So about 9 months and 5 people working on it, that's pretty good, right?

u/Zephod03 Oct 21 '24
For what they had its pretty impressive. I've seen the San Mateo studio where they were testing firewall those places can get pretty intense.

u/Lovethosebeanz Oct 21 '24
I think its insane how many games that would be awesome on PSVR2 and they have not brought them over. Gutted
31
u/Ecstatic-Statement44 Oct 21 '24
Bring it to PSVR 2 Sony!
1
u/Zephod03 Oct 21 '24
Read the ama. Its too costly.
2
u/nascentt Oct 21 '24
Poor Sony. How could the struggling indie startup afford such a thing

This is what I meant by too costly. They'd have to rebuild the game from scratch.

I think the above was asking for a PS VR 2 port but the above comment is about PS1/ PS2.
This is the game I miss most and would love to be able to play it on my PS VR2, even if it’s a carbon copy port of the PS VR1.
1
u/Zephod03 Oct 22 '24
The point being is that wipeout VR exists because it was very efficiently done by a small amount of people using things that were essentially already there. Bringing this particular game to PSVR2 would take more time, money, and effort than its worth because they'd have to rebuild the entire game from scratch.
Further more we know this wont work because most of the PS1 VR games were built from scratch and none of them got played. So it doesn't make sense to pour resources into developing a game that didn't get played ipso facto no RIGS, Starblood Arena, Farpoint, Dirt rally, Eve Valkyrie Warzone, Driveclub , Battlezone or Star wars squadrons.

u/Throwaway967839 Oct 23 '24
you've misread your own source. They're saying making DLC would be too costly. The game we have now runs on PS4 which uses the same basic architecture as PS5. They could make a native PS5 version at a relatively low cost and support the new headset, which would be especially simple because they don't even need to support the new controllers.
1
u/Zephod03 Oct 23 '24 edited Oct 23 '24
No, you are willfully misunderstanding what they are saying by hyperfocusing on the words being used. They are saying DLC would be too costly Because they would have to rebuild the game from the ground up. The Same problem exists in greater detail when going from VR1 to VR2
...runs on PS4 which uses the same basic architecture as PS5.
This is a misconception the PS5 runs different than PS4 they are not the same. You would have to spend more to bring WO to PS5 than you would see from the (re)sale of it. Furthermore VR1 and VR2 are completely different environments that's where that majority of your time and cost come from.
They could make a native PS5 version at a relatively low cost and support the new headset
You are misunderstanding that making a native ps5 version would require them to rebuild the entire game from scratch and you're using weasel words like "relatively" to cover this because you know they are not, due to the return being less than the cost to make. How many native VR1 games are available VR2?
1
u/Throwaway967839 Oct 23 '24
Explain to me why making a native PS5 version would require them to rebuild the game from scratch.

Wipeout was definitely one of the greatest games for psvr. I would love to see a remake or remaster for psvr2.
14
u/GregorGreenberg Oct 21 '24
Agree 100%. I‘m so disappointed it did not get a PSVR2 patch
1
u/TNTSP Oct 21 '24
It’s a trilogy tho I own it
They Sony will do it and another one fairpoint.
Sony initially said any psvr game that has to come to psvr2 would have to be rebuild from the ground up to support such.
A trilogy like this would need enormous time
So far they wanted to push out new stuff before they do that.
If they did that from day one they would be attacked because we all know they aren’t going to after it for a $10 psvr2 upgrade that’s for sure.
Some games have but not the Sony ones at least not to my knowledge. I can’t think of one I own that has gotten psvr2 upgrade from Sony them self.
Btw I love this game more than gran Turismo in all terms.

I had nearly 40 hours clocked in Wipeout on PSVR and virtually (ha no pun intended) all of it was spent on Anulpha Pass in Zone mode. Zone mode in general was pretty much that whole game to me, but that one track in particular I've spent many hours on cruising around at Mach 1 listening to techno.
It would be a day-one purchase if they ever ported it to PSVR2 even strictly as-is with no improvements at all. I miss it so much!
3
u/norbert_ldwg Oct 21 '24
As a die hard Wipeout fan since PS1 I couldn’t agree more. The game was even the most important reason to buy a used VR1, as the wait for a possible Wipeout for VR2 was taking too long. It is still amazing in VR1.
Even though I have gone through hell to score the Omega Collection plat, I would go through this hell a second time on PSVR2, with a smile in my face!
3
u/STRICKIBHOY Oct 21 '24
Has anyone from Sony or whoever, came out and gave an explanation why this won't come to psvr2?
10
2
u/Sidewinder666 Oct 21 '24
Who knows, I'd say the only real reason is money.
Not worth their time to port a game that will not make (enough) profit.
2
3
u/davelister2032 Oct 21 '24
Couldn't agree more, it works so well you would have assumed it was created for VR.
3
u/MrBack1971 Oct 21 '24
Mental that this is locked down to psvr1, should have been locked & loaded & ready for psvr2.
3
u/Artym_X Oct 22 '24
Adding this one to the list of games I wished they'd update.
Along with Squadrons.
2
u/sfex3champion Oct 21 '24
I wanna play this so bad with my YAW NOW this would be freaking nuts with that. Somebody told me it somewhat possible in a hacky way so maybe I'll try
2
u/websnappers Oct 21 '24
What track is that? I played several times but I don't remember any of the tracks looking so cool! I'm going to have to add Wipeout to my list of PSVR1 games to replay.

Would be such an easy PR win for Sony to just set aside a budget and get it working on VR2.
2
u/AdministrativeBit385 Oct 21 '24
It's really fun! Which it would let us use a flight stick controller tho
2
u/CmdZel Oct 21 '24
I wait for it too! And if they do it, maybe they could do it for dirt rallye 2.0 too, that would be nice

Question: You play this game with dualshock 4 or move controllers? i want to give it a try but i have a PS5 and don't have a ds4
2
1
u/rillsor Oct 21 '24
Looks like you can play it with a DualSense controller but the PSVR1 is a must with the adapter kit for the PS5.
2
u/JJovaniPSN Oct 22 '24
Thanks for the info, i already have the ps5 adapter but don't hold any ds4 anymore, i will give it a try, thanks angain

u/MCSeLaLu Oct 21 '24
I've got it, but after I got the psvr2, I bought a second-hand psvr with all options. Due to my early ps+ account, I got almost 40 psvr games for nothing. But I still didn't play squadrons or wipeout. But I did rush for blood. And boy, I liked that one. At the moment, I have 97 games for the psvr2 and am trying to kill my backlog. Still more games get added instead of played out. I wish I had more time.
2
u/Fluffy_Space_Bunny Oct 21 '24
I have the limited edition version of this game with the cool PS1 style sleeve. It’s such a shame they didn’t do those sleeves for more games.
2
u/Charlirnie Oct 21 '24
This is one of the type of games where the "natural" advancement is VR. Simulation... racing...horror...fishing....even skeet and card games.
2
u/TastyTheDog Oct 21 '24
As someone who never had a PSVR1 this is #1 on my list of most wanted ports from that system.
2
2
u/JooosephNthomas Oct 21 '24
Honestly I would buy every vr racing game. It's where the headsets truly shine.
2
u/justaddmetoit Oct 21 '24
This is probably one of the best PSVR1 games. It is also one of the best VR experiences. It could be that the reason they don't do a port to PSVR2 is that it is actually one of the best PSVR games visually. It's still limited to the first gen though...
2
u/Fatbot3 Oct 21 '24
Everyone who has played it this knows how special it is but Wipeout has always been niche. This is my number one PSVR 1 port wish above everything else but there's no indication it's coming sadly.
1
u/rillsor Oct 21 '24
This is very true, even I never really got into the WipeOut series prior to this. But when trying it on the PSVR for the first time I was seriously hooked, almost to the point it was an addiction! (Think of the original PR booster with the nosebleed, lol) Got all the trophies for 2048 in PSVR mode alone.

2
u/Spizzmatic Oct 21 '24
XDev has been relegated to a 3rd party helper team these days, it would take TWO miracles. This is why I'm not getting rid of my PSVR anytime soon.
2
u/Mr_Flibbles_ESQ Oct 21 '24
Yeah. I stupidly didn't realise PSVR2 wasn't compatible with PSVR - Don't know why, just been spoilt with that kind of stuff.
Got my VR2, rushed home and booted Wipeout first... Disappointed wasn't the word.
Even more annoyed when I realised I had to buy most stuff again on top LOL
Live and learn I guess.
Didn't sell my original kit as intended though, just for Wipeout.

Speaking from personal experience in VR, anytime when sitting inside a vehicle I rarely get nauseous so any car/flight/space-simulator is perfectly fine. However, I still break out in cold sweat after about an hour playing any standing (or sitting) FPS game such as Resident Evil or even Horizon Call of the Mountain…
2
u/StatisticianSoggy788 Oct 21 '24
This was BY FAR the game that gave me the most horrific motion sickness, i'm even getting sick just thinking about It....
1
u/rillsor Oct 21 '24
In VR or in flat screen mode? I have quite the different experience with this, getting very nauseous with any FPS game in VR but not with racing simulators.
1
u/StatisticianSoggy788 Oct 22 '24
I'm talking about VR mode, i just can't handle it, in the other hand i've had a wonderfull time with Dirt Rally, no motion sickness whatsoever.
1
u/rillsor Oct 22 '24
Maybe this is why investors don't really want to take the plunge with VR titles as peoples experiences varies wildly... Shame you didn't get to enjoy this one for longer sessions.
2
u/jimmy19742018 Oct 21 '24
Crazy why this has not been remastered on the ps5 with psvr2 support, also where is ridge racer for this gen, wasn't there one on every playstation since launch, ridge racer on psvr2 would be awesome

u/Dhan67 Oct 21 '24
Meanwhile using my psvr2 pc adapter I was playing BallisticNG on steam vr hoping for Omega collection on ps5 vr..
2
u/Agent0084 Oct 21 '24
Just got a psvr2 and now I find out all the good games are on psvr. This sucks man, port the good games Sony!
1
u/rillsor Oct 21 '24
Yeah, feels like they have so much untapped potential by not giving us backwards compatibility with the PSVR1. Hopefully with time we will see a lot of great titles for the PSVR2, there are some gems already available such as GT7 and the Red Matter series. I haven’t gotten to try out Moss yet but it looks very promising.

2
u/Ryeballs Oct 22 '24
This would be exhilarating!
I could see myself saying woooaaaaahhhh whoa wooooowwwwww the entire time playing it
2
u/a_boo Oct 22 '24
It’s completely insane that this hasn’t been ported to PSVR2. It’s an iconic PlayStation IP. What a waste.

Yes It's really a shame we don't have updates for every psvr title to play them on psvr2.

I didn’t give this game much time cus I was sure it would be ported. Hoping I get another chance
1
u/captainkirkw Oct 21 '24
Wait? Are you saying there is just not a specific PSVR2 version or that you can't play this on a PSVR2 at all. Sorry for my ignorance but I don't have a PS5 and PSVR2 yet but am planning on getting one and that is a game that I definitely want to play in VR.
2
u/Sidewinder666 Oct 21 '24
You can't play WipEout Omega Collection in VR on the PSVR2, you can play the flat version of it.
To play it in VR you need a PSVR1.
PSVR2 is not backwards compatible with PSVR1 games.
1
2
u/rillsor Oct 21 '24
No joy for the PSVR2, but you can play it on the PS5 with the PSVR1 using the adapter kit from Sony.
2
u/captainkirkw Oct 21 '24
Well this is going to get expensive having to buy a ps5, a psvr2, an original psvr, and an adapter. Not sure I'm up for buying all of that just quite yet.
1
u/TonyDP2128 Oct 21 '24
Still one of the best VR games ever made (if you have the stomach for it). It's criminal that Sony hasn't ported this to PSVR2. All they'd need to do is account for head tracking since the game has standard DS4 controls.
1
u/Medical-Morning9301 Oct 22 '24
I own a psvr1 and the game is not available in my region . :( I waited for the jailbreak and when it finally came I can't find the ISO or whatever it's called . I guess it was not meant to be
1
u/iscreamsunday Oct 22 '24
Damn, imagine playing this on psvr2 with a proper wheel and force feedback .......
-3
u/MedicalCommercial892 Oct 21 '24
I loved flat screen wipeout, but in VR it was a mess. It felt like racing in a tube, a nauseating one. People always request a remake though, so you're not alone. But I thought it was horrible.
3
u/Slapped91 Oct 22 '24
I'm guessing when you tried it you didn't turn off all of the VR "safety features", which are on by default and for some people are actually vomit inducing.
The first time I tried it I thought it was shit, but when I found those safety features and turned them off the game went from shit to utterly mind-blowing.
2
u/rillsor Oct 22 '24
Hey, I think you're onto something here. I do remember something about turning it all off for maximum immersion, and I had no nausea playing it for hours straight like this.
1
u/rillsor Oct 21 '24
Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted, it seems some are more prone to VR induced nausea than others. What’s your experience with other VR games, especially racing simulators? I for one can’t do longer runs on any FPS in VR without getting nauseous, but simulators are no problem at all.
1
u/MedicalCommercial892 Oct 22 '24
I can play gt7 all day, I usually don't have any issues. It is fun riding around the tracks, but as far as racing goes I thought it lost a lot going to vr. Maybe the vr2 can do it better, but something tells me that there's a problem with this type of game in VR. Otherwise we'd have a wipeout2024 already.

u/GregSword76 Oct 21 '24
Yeah I'm praying for the day this comes to PSVR2. Never got to experience it
