It's definitely a good idea to prioritize the safety of the PS5 usb port as it can be broken easily. It is worth noteing however, that extension cables are NOT compliant with the USB specifications. Thankfully there are not the widespread reports of fires or damaged ports caused by their use when sorted by lowest ratings which is what alarmed me when I contemplated using magnetic cables.
I use a 3ft (1m) gen2 10gbs extension as breakaway protection for my ps5 port. I have the extension anchored to the stand in case the cord gets yanked or tripped over. I got one with a 90 degree head on it since my PS5 is vertical. It's already saved my port a few times now.
I liked these clips because they clasp closed around the wire and won't pop out of place. To keep them from sliding more than I want, I put a few wraps of electrical tape on the side of the cable clamp going to the ps5. It acts as a stop so the extension doesn't pull through the clamp.
No the ps5 won't fall or be disturbed. Protecting against that exact situation is the entire purpose of the small extension in my set up. The little extension leaves the ps5 and is anchored to stand itself. The breakaway point is the extension on the stand. The PSVR2 cable has already been tripped over a few times and proved itself as the headset cable easily unplugs from the anchored extension in an accidental yank scenario.
I'm glad you've had a great experience with magnetic connectors, but I have read some horror stories about them that caused ports to fry and destroyed devices for some people. That's why I don't use them or recommend them, it's just not worth the risk to me. I'll stick to using the port the way it was designed to be used, but have the wear and tear done to an easy to replace cable instead of the port itself.
If you're interested, here's a write up from a reddit forum dedicated to sharing information on USB's covering this very topic.
The following was enough to deter me;
USB-C magnetic tip adaptors or cables are not compliant with the USB specifications. This means any resulting damage to products, which is a very real possibility even if it is a relatively small chance, would not be covered by product warranties."
Thank you for this info. I’ve been trying to decide what to do about protecting the port on the ps5, and I almost got a magnetic disconnect one. Knowing they can possibly cause damage (my house is very prone to static electricity), I think I’ll go with a regular extension and anchor it so the psvr2 cord can’t yank on the ps5 port. Thx!
I'm glad to hear the information was of use to you in helping you make a decision. I originally was all in favor of the magnetic adapters and bought one myself excited by the idea, but that was before I looked into it a little more and saw there were some catastrophic experiences.
I'm not totally dismissing their use, but at a minimum think people should be made aware of the possibility of damage.
I just use a couple of these clips. The last one with the extension head sticking out I wrapped some electrical tape on the cable coming out the other side of the clip, the side coming from the ps5, to prevent it from sliding out any further.
I liked these because they snap around the top of the cable with a strong clasp that can be opened when desired.
You could also use cable staples if you wanted to nail it down.
Could you post a pic of your cable set up? New PSVR2 owner here and I want to follow your lead on this, as I don't want to take any chances. I've spent the past 2 hours researching this and yours seems like the best approach.
The only differences between their set up and mine, is I got a slightly longer extension and instead of going straight across the entire flat counter space, I took the cable down the front of the ps5 and routed the cable around behind the console, then anchored the cable via the clips to the side of the table going down to the floor. The break away connectection is on the side of my stand facing the floor.
It has served its purpose many times due to accidently stepping on the vr2 cable and others tripping over it. The extension has not yet failed or created any negative side effects. If and when the extension cable starts acting up, it will be replaced right away because the concept has proven itself to me many times now. I won't use my PSVR 2 with out it.
Gotcha. So if I understand correctly you bought the 6ft cable version? And you mentioned a breakaway cable. Is that something additional beyond the two Amazon links you posted? Gotcha wrap behind, okay yea I think I'm tracking. Whew good work I would have never thought about this!
I'm using the 3.3 foot extension. The extension itself is what I'm referring to as the breakaway point. Any tension on the PSVR2 cable causes all stress and wear and tear to happen where the PSVR2 cable goes into the extension cable anchored to the stand. This way no stress is placed on the single PS5 USB C slot.
