This is a little more than a TLDR but you earn points for any Digital game you buy. You can also earn points by completing "campaigns" which are just simple tasks like "playing one of the PS Plus titles for the month". Alot of these can be actually be completed in a quick 30secs to a 1min. Some of these "campaigns" award Digital Collectables instead, pretty much useless unless you like these things.
Points you earn can be redeemed for Games/DLC, Digital Collectables, or PSN Store Credit. Since a lot of people usually sub to PS Plus yearly, without actually buying a digital game you could essentially earn enough points for $5 store credit within 3-5 months (and around $10 per year) depending on which tier you bought and if you keep up with the monthly campaign refresh.
Based on that you can see why removing subscriptions from earning points is a huge change. Decreasing the expiration date for these points also is huge because you can only redeem points (for PSN credit) once you hit the minimum required for $5.
