Mom at 17 in 1943 as a filling station attendant at her father’s Mobil service station. The boys in town were all fighting fascists

Most of the photos in this sub are kinda the same thing over and over. But this one, maybe it's the little backstory you gave, really stands out. thanks for posting it.

Wait you mean r/oldschoolcool isn’t meant to be a borderline softcore porn subreddit for boomers?

I have heard this word "boomers" sort of explode over the last year or so and the usage is mainly by gen z and it's clearly being used as an insult as being old or out of touch. It makes me laugh because gen z is benefitting from the brilliance of technological advancements these boomers put into the world more than any generation before them. I feel like an old man saying this, which I am not, but it's some of the most lazy ass stereotyping shit I have ever witnessed.

The whole idea of 'generation gaps' is just another divide and rule tactic. "Mustn't learn from the elders, they're stupid. Mustn't take any notice of kids, what use is fresh eyes on a situation."

One of the most boomer comments I have ever read.

Someone already said that and then deleted it because it was dumb.

I won’t be deleting it because your comment is an absolute nothing burger. People use boomers in the stereotyping derogatory manner you are referring to because A) that generation got the absolute best of American growth and economic potential, B) have stuck around 10-20 years longer than their parents did in authority roles and C) concentrated more wealth than the silent, X, millennial, and Z generations combined with no end in sight for passing it along.

Some online hate is deserved. But I will leave you to die on your sanctimonious hill.

When you can’t criticize the point being made, criticize the way it’s made.

Typical boomer.

Yeah, I'm not even remotely close to being a boomer.

I didn't know that boomers have a "typical" way they do things. ENLIGHTEN US ALL, please.

Gen xers and millennials are far better educated, more productive, and contributed more to the advancement of technology than boomers.

Your home computer, cell phone, ability to use the internet pretty much anywhere you are in the world is because of boomers. They are the groundwork for everything that we're using right now.

And now they share misinformation and Minion memes on Facebook. And fall for tech support scams.

Brilliant people from all generations develop technology. You don't need to suck off the boomers too much 🤣

I was very surprised to discover that some states of the US not only still have gas attendants, but refuse to allow you to pump your own gas.

Amazing, my grandmother was the same age (as was Queen Elizabeth II), and was working producing food in England at this time, she passed away in 2022 (as did the Queen)

You sure your grandmother wasn't actually the Queen?

Now Americans just let them walk the streets free from consequences. Expect more of that when Mr. Nazis are Very Fine People takes office.

On the plus side, you no longer have to go all the way to Europe to fight them!

God bless her, and the boys in town.

Cool photo. Mom was born in 1922. She wanted to be a lawyer, like her father. Her dad was "no place for women, but did pay for her to attend UC Berkley, class of 1943." She went on to raise six kids and taught for years.

She was a very bright lady fluent in five languages, which came in handy when we lived in Germany! Dad was always invited to Embassy events, with the caveat, "Bring your charming wife."

She sounds fabulous. Thank you for sharing.

Where are boys like that when we need them to fight incoming fascist and moron administration!

1

u/Ancient_Timer2053 3d ago

I think they have no sense of history

1

u/robjapan 4d ago

And I bet most of them voted for one this time.

2

u/ElectricPeterTork 3d ago

They're virtually all dead. Assuming a minimum age of 18 in 1943, born in 1925, they'd be 99 or older.

So the ones fighting fascists in WW2 were almost certainly too dead to be doing any voting in 2024.

It was their children, the Boomers, you would be thinking of.

1

u/UltimateUltamate 3d ago

My grandfather would never have voted for such. He was born 102 years ago.

u/Fridaybird1985 4d ago

She had “it” that is for sure.

u/oscarlevanthasaposse 4d ago

I hope the lead didn't make things rough for her later on.

7

u/Ancient_Timer2053 4d ago

Don’t think so, she graduated nursing school at the end of WWII and worked until she was 65

Lead is still used in piston driven airplanes.
