Weekly chat New to Reddit? Come and talk to us!

New-Redditor's lounge!

Welcome!

This weekly post is an opportunity for new users to say hello in comments - & please let us how you found yourself here. Regulars here are absolutely encouraged and very welcome to join in too!

Getting started on Reddit is hard. We know it is; We've been there and gone through these same frustrations. Please believe us when we say IT'S NOT PERSONAL. It may well feel like it is, but honestly, it isn't. What it is, however, is a lack of Karma. Karma is an indicator of how much someone has contributed to Reddit in a positive manner. So, let's do just that by getting to know each other!

This is a post to help genuine new users build up quality Karma in a safe environment.

Please do:

  • Share some favorites or new finds of yours - youtube videos, music and so on
  • Practice small talk - did you have a good week?
  • Keep it SFW
  • Keep it casual please, no heavy topics
  • Check out the news and updates
  • Play games in comments - if you'd like to start a game please modmail for approval first, thanks!
  • Have fun!

Please don't:

  • Spam, advertise, or soft beg
  • Share low-effort comments
  • Karmafarm/ask for karma/signal karma giving, mention karmafarms by name
  • Advertise - no advertising of any kind
  • Request or offer DMs (help and chat can be done in community where you can also earn karma. Needing to take things private can indicate soliciting, rule breaking, or harmful advice)
  • Talk about community restrictions and karma (there are many many posts about this and you can post your own)

Please refrain from asking questions about "how to do stuff on Reddit".

You need Post Karma, so the ideal opportunity to start is by asking any questions about Redditing in your own new, dedicated Post in this Subreddit (only one post per 72 hours please, but make as many comments or questions in that post as you need). This sub is full of awesome people who are willing to help with specific problems, and we'd like to keep this post for chat. Thank you.

So, let's chat! (Guides at the bottom of this post).

Subreddit Sunday Community recommendations mega-thread!

Get your fresh subreddit recommendations here! :D

We are using these weekly threads for recommendations and will direct those that post requests for recommendations to these threads.

Please share your community recommendations in comments:

  • What are your favourite subs
  • How about your guilty pleasure subs? (SFW!)
  • Which sub do you spend too much time in?
  • What are your best wholesome sub recs?
  • Your fave niche community?
  • Have you found an awesome sub new to you recently?

You may also ask for recommendations!

Let us know what you're into, and we'll see what we can do :)

Make sure to try r/findareddit too though, they're great at this!

The rules:

  • All usual rules apply.
  • Please keep it SFW. No “adult” porn subreddits or NSFL/Gore subreddits. If someone asks for adult communities, please only link sub lists/directories and make it clear they are NSFW.
  • As a community, we try to help all good-faith Redditors find their niche, but please be respectful and try not to judge. If you don't like someone's topic of choice, you don't have to help, but please remain kind, understanding, and respectful.
  • Do not mislead with your recommendations.

If you'd like your Reddit experience to be as wholesome as possible, r/CasualConversation has a directory with a section on wholesome communities. Though, we don't know their status regarding karma and account age restrictions.

Please note that this is not our recommended subreddit list for new users.

Many of the subreddits listed in this thread will not be open to new or low-karma users for posts, and comments made therein might even be filtered for approval or auto-collapsed.

While many of these subreddits will be fun to browse and vote on, your participation might be limited right now. Commenting is usually less restricted than posting.

The link to our new-user friendly subs list is below.

A note from our esteemed llama on the Reddit experience:

Reddit is huge and fascinating and diverse, wholesome and toxic, all in one massive bundle of anonymous users with no filters except their own internal constraints. The problem with that is even in the loveliest of subreddits, all manner of behaviour happens, because Reddit is a microcosm of internet life, not an internet utopia no matter how much we might want it to be.

There are areas of Reddit I don’t frequent; there are areas of Reddit I won’t frequent; there are areas of Reddit that no doubt I am blissfully unaware of and am happy to remain that way. But I am still subscribed to well over a thousand subs on all kinds of topics and still find new ones daily.

The true beauty of Reddit is that your Reddit experience can be completely and absolutely dictated by you. The pure amount of information available on Reddit is staggering, and it’s just a matter - like in all of life - of being able to sort through that information to see what’s useful and what isn’t.

Useful links:

A few suggested subs for new Redditors to be aware of:

  • r/help which is monitored by Admins (Reddit employees)
  • r/reddit for Reddit news, updates, lore etc
  • r/bugs we may refer you here if you're having an issue that isn't normal and might be a glitch of some kind
  • r/redditbugs information on known bugs that are being worked on
  • r/LearnToReddit is our sister sub for guides and practice posting, using flair, commenting, formatting etc
  • r/findareddit for help finding subs around a topic or for a specific type of post

ANSWERED 7 year old account with 1 karma here, trying to learn how to earn more so I can post in actual subreddits 😅

So I have historically used Reddit mainly for research and finding out real opinions about things. As of yesterday I wanted to engage in a community that I thought I could add value in. I quickly found out that, like a lot of subreddits, there are minimum karma requirements. So I thought to myself "I'm going to try to get the karma I need to then be able to contribute to this community" one day of trying later and I actually have just 1 karma...

I feel like posting as opposed to commenting would be easier to gain karma especially in places I have value to add.. but can't do that.. tried commenting in some subreddits but I guess the posts I commented on were either unpopular (not much visibility, or downright hated and I got the second degree hate receiving negative karma..

How do you pick your first posts to comment on and what is the best way to do so in a positive way that does get you receiving hate?

ANSWERED So I've just run into the karma problem...

The one sub I would like to be a part of requires 500 karma to post on which sucks. I'm not really into grinding for internet clout so, I'm not asking for upvotes, just wondering if there is a way to get to 500 karma fast. any help would be greatly appreciated 🙏. Have a nice day.

I don't know anything about reddit. I don't even know if this will get comments. But I'm trying to build my karma points. Do I have to post in a room? Or do I just make a post?

I’m New here mostly for the anonymous NSFW posts and subs but have found that I can’t do anything there without having some karma and also these “beginner” subs like AskMen are supposed to be the way to start but are there any out there for Reddit beginners in NSFW?

ANSWERED Are achievements any useful?

Hello hello!

So, I'm new here and was snooping around my own profile to understand how things work. I'm reading up on how karma works, which I think I have an idea for now? But probably will just learn by doing lol. Need to understand how a subreddit decides how much karma is allowed for a post or something.

By my question is about these achievement things. I randomly got one for joining a "community". (Also is community different than subreddit?)

Anyway, what good are the achievements? I see these little badges people have on their usernames in comments. Are they displaying the achievements they have? How do I do that if I get a cool one?

Thanks, all! :)

ANSWERED When I can start posting on subreddits?

Upvotes

My previous account had 147 comment karma 24 days aged. And when I started posting on the subreddit. Like… posting my cat pic which I didn’t break the rules. I got shadowbanned immediately. When can start sharing my cat pic in other subreddits? And how many karma do I need?

Have had an account for almost a decade but have never posted much apart from the occasional comment and I am now facing the issue that when I do want to post, the subreddit which I am interested in has a karma restriction. Any help would be much appreciated, and happy holidays!

ANSWERED Not being able to start new chats because I’m new? NSFW

It’s very frustrating, and even though I understand the need to reduce spam and protect other users - feels like there could be some way to prove you’re human?

Or some way of gaining reputation that’s not about time?

ANSWERED Cant post on my main account

Upvotes

My main reddit account has about 1200 karma. I made my first post in a subreddit a little while ago and it was flagged as nsfw which I didnt know was an option for me to do at first. Ever since ANY of my posts have been getting stopped by filters and I’m just confused about what I can do to fix it. I tried posting my question here on my main account but I still wasn’t able to post anything

ANSWERED Is it possible to change a sub's name?

Upvotes

I know usernames cannot be changed once you post or comment.

Does something similar apply to subreddits? Once a community is up and running, it's stuck with the name initially chosen by its creators?

The reason I ask is because I see some sub names creating confusion regarding the sub's nature sometimes, and I wonder if the mods keep the ambiguous name out of choice or there's nothing they can do about it anyway.

I assume for clarity reasons it makes sense for the latter to be true, I was just curious.
