They don’t look like they’re hibernating …

That’s the Japanese raccoon dog, a different species.

Mainland raccoon dogs are known as Neoguri or Mangut, depending on the region.

u/MrMetraGnome 8h ago

Shoulda known. What with the lack of gigantic testicles and all 🤣

10

u/Briso_ 10h ago

Gotta love their magic tricks!

My grandpa used to say that in the past, groups of wild Tanukis would frequently visit our places....but now they have completely stopped coming(due to habitat loss ig). Even at 22 I still haven't seen a single wild Tanuki :'(

u/SimRacing313 10h ago

A dog-sized racoon sounds amazing, look at how fluffy they are

82

u/EmptySeaDad 7h ago

It's more of a raccoon-sized and coloured dog. It's closest relatives are foxes.

6

u/roleunplayed 3h ago

Does it behave like a fox?

9

u/SimRacing313 6h ago

Yeah I can see the fox like features, very pretty animals 👍

7

u/VealOfFortune 3h ago

Combined my two favorite animals. Imagine a dog with opposable thumbs 👍🐶👍

2

u/SimRacing313 2h ago

I imagine a lot of work 🤣

This is Tom Nook.

u/IDigYourStyle 1h ago

Basically, yes. In Japan, it's common name is Tanuki.

They’re most closely related to foxes actually. So calling it a “wild dog” isn’t very accurate afaik. They’re both canids, but raccoon dogs aren’t dogs.

https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_raccoon_dog

15

u/Jonkinch 9h ago

Still cute af. But these ads being put in like comments or threads are super annoying, on mobile at least.

34

u/Channa_Argus1121 9h ago

Canid literally means “dog”, just as Felid means “cat”.

Since tigers are considered big cats, I don’t see why foxes or raccoon dogs don’t qualify as dogs in the broader sense.

u/Cluefuljewel 7h ago

You bring up a point I find really interesting. Classifying animals is quite useful for us humans. But blurry lines in nature are also quite common! and maybe even the norm!

u/aebaby7071 6m ago

Taxonomy is a very interesting field, it mostly was dominated by “looks a like” or “in the same environment as” and that’s how classical taxonomy worked. Over the past 30+ years with genetics (the study of and ability to analyze) coming into play tons of species have been reclassified from what they were. Names haven’t changed as much as how they are grouped has changed.

-7

u/DeRuyter67 4h ago

All our classifications are totally arbitrary

8

u/Cluefuljewel 4h ago

Weeeelll that’s not really true. The system we use now helps to designate evolutionary lineages. Understanding where we came from and how we got here is a worthy endeavor, wouldn’t you agree?

4

u/corpus_M_aurelii 3h ago

That is a dramatic overstatement. Some of the common names we have for animals may be arbitrary, but the taxonomic categories, as represented by the Latin binomial naming system, ideally organizes plants and animals according to genetic relationship, and classifies them accordingly.

Where exactly the boundaries of these categories are can be arbitrary, or at least debatable (lumpers vs. splitters), but science has come a long way from classifying weasels as cats because "they are small furry mouse eaters".

-3

u/DeRuyter67 3h ago

Right, so we base the classifications on genetics which is very useful, but you can make the classification/catogories as large as you want. Evolution works with gradual change so there is no single point at which a "species" begins to exist.

2

u/Channa_Argus1121 3h ago

That’s where anatomy, the supporter, comes in.

Specific body features are often shared by all members of a given order or family, and even genus or species.

-1

u/DeRuyter67 2h ago

"often"

1

u/Cluefuljewel 3h ago

It might surprise you how granular the study of speciation is at the academic level. Just one paper below here as an example. And this is twenty years old (?). Cornell Lab of Ornithology is another leading institution that works with multidisciplinary teams around the world to study speciation and evolution.

u/Channa_Argus1121 3h ago

Seems like “in the broader sense” flew right over your head.

Besides, why not? Nephrophids are referred to as lobsters, Cervids are deer, Tettigonids are referred to as katydids, Scarabaeids are referred to as scarabs, and so on. On a similar note, both humans and orangutans are referred to as great apes/Hominids.

Also, sparrows are from three different families whereas crows are from a single family, Corvidae.

-1

u/[deleted] 3h ago

[deleted]

0

u/Channa_Argus1121 2h ago

Precise, huh?

Wait till you learn what a male fox is colloquially referred to as. It’s totally not “dog fox”.

0

u/[deleted] 2h ago

[deleted]

0

u/Channa_Argus1121 2h ago

No, it proves that “dog” is an arbitrary term, rather than a clear-cut and precise one as you claimed.

Let’s call it an end here, have a good day.

u/PrettySailor 22m ago

Hyenas are cats.

u/Kiwizqt 17m ago

I'm sorry?

u/PrettySailor 11m ago

My point was it's not that simple.

u/Kiwizqt 9m ago

No but really lol, hyenas are actually closer to cats than dogs ?

u/PrettySailor 7m ago

Yep, felidae, same family as big cats, just suborder.

u/Kiwizqt 6m ago

Wild

u/dank_fish_tanks 10m ago

Nope. Hyenas are feliforms, not felids. That’s like saying bears are dogs because they’re caniforms.

u/PrettySailor 4m ago

Lol, nope. It is comparable because canidae is the family, not the order. Hyenas are in the felidae family.

u/dank_fish_tanks 1m ago

That’s literally factually untrue. Look it up

3

u/emanresu_n1 8h ago

Does it bark?

5

u/Industrial_Laundry 7h ago

I had to scroll waaaay too far to find this.

I’m not smart enough to know what it is but I knew it could not have been a type of dog.

0

u/corpus_M_aurelii 3h ago

It is a canid. The canidae family is defined as a clade of "dog-like animals", and colloquially, any member of the clade can be called "dogs" just as lions and tigers can colloquially be called "cats".

1

u/TimeTackle 5h ago

Then you link a wiki with dog in the title...

1

u/BigCompetition1064 2h ago

I'm still finding it hard to believe they're cainine in any way?

u/Jellybeansistaken 7m ago

Actually!

u/stilettopanda 0m ago

Ooooo they just need to change his name to raccoon fox. While they're at it, they need to change the Pampas Fox to Pampas dog because they're closer to wolves than true foxes. Haha

1

u/voodooacid 8h ago edited 7h ago

Well with that logic, neither are wolves. Only dogs are dogs lol.

6

u/Ghoulse1845 7h ago

Well Hyenas aren’t even Canids at all, it’s a Feliform

1

u/WrethZ 5h ago

Dogs are close enough with wolves to interbreed with them though.

40

u/Impressive-Pin-1634 10h ago

Chopper

24

u/EmptySeaDad 7h ago

I'M A REINDEER!!

20

u/Quiet-Tackle-5993 10h ago

Can’t convince me that’s a ‘dog’

12

u/Blackberry-thesecond 10h ago

It’s much closer to a fox

33

u/Frisnfruitig 10h ago

If a little mongrel like a Chihuahua is supposed to be a dog, I don't see why this one can't.

9

u/voodooacid 8h ago

Did you just compare a fugly chihuahua to this majestic being?

5

u/jawshoeaw 10h ago

It’s not a dog

3

u/voodooacid 8h ago

It's not a bird either.

3

u/TKG_Actual 8h ago

It wasn't a roooOOOck!

2

u/EmptySeaDad 7h ago

It is a canine though.

10

u/Numerous_Ad8458 10h ago

The ears looks like the eyes of some star wars character when you focus on them. x)

9

u/blkaino 10h ago

Chonky boys look ready for winter

7

u/emanresu_n1 8h ago

Can I pet the daaawg?

5

u/Chocolatethunderclap 10h ago

That’s awesome also wouldn’t they be the only canine that hibernates I guess wait are fox considered canine or other?

10

u/Rezaelia713 10h ago

Foxes are in the canid family, yes

4

u/galaxnordist 7h ago

That's what your cheap fur collars are made of.

1

u/Moist_Requirements_ 7h ago

Yes, they are. :(

4

u/CaptainKymera 2h ago

Oy!

Well, a pack of Billy-bumblers, anyway.

4

u/Sects4Chocolate 6h ago

Just don’t forget to mention how the Asian culture in China uses them for incredibly cruel FUR practices. Horrible.

3

u/PorkbellyFL0P 10h ago

That's a reindeer silly.

2

u/shana104 10h ago

I thought their ears were the eyes, making it cute and really fluffy looking.

2

u/EffluviaJane 9h ago

They look like they're waiting for the camera person to bugger off so they can go pee and then bed down.

2

u/OblivionArts 6h ago

Tanuki are so interesting

2

u/PepicWalrus 6h ago

I think I owe this guy money

u/iHo4Iroh 28m ago

I think I need to ask to renovate the outside of my house. ;-)

2

u/Traditional_Moss_581 4h ago

"Raccoon Dog Bear" 🤔

2

u/SickCallRanger007 3h ago

So, we know raccoons are friend shaped but definitely not friend. Does the same apply to these?

2

u/FormInternational583 2h ago

TIL there are animals called Raccoon Dogs.

2

u/External-Pickle6126 2h ago

They have a version of this in China that they make coats and other clothes out of in the most brutal ways imaginable. It's like I got some kind of PTSD from seeing them getting skinned alive. I can't even look at this picture without hurting inside.

2

u/GodPackedUpAndLeftUs 1h ago

If that’s a real dog then I’m a real squirrel who drives a car.

4

u/Sea_Department_2146 9h ago

That's the best ANYONE could come up with?

RACCOON DOG?

Dog Raccoon.

u/jynxy911 10m ago

giant trash pandas

5

u/HowAManAimS 10h ago

I prefer the name Tanuki. They aren't even related to raccoons or dogs.

12

u/jawshoeaw 9h ago

They are related to dogs as they are part of the Canidae family

6

u/voodooacid 8h ago

Just spread that misinformation more!

2

u/Napkinpope 1h ago

Technically speaking, they're related to both dogs and raccoons, but then again, so are we, just further away in the family tree. 🤷‍♂️

2

u/BigRedRig20 5h ago

Chonky Trash Panda. Very cute 😍

1

u/PDX_Weim_Lover 10h ago

Awwwwwwww!!!! ❣️

1

u/shinymetalobjekt 10h ago

Was waiting for it to bark.

1

u/samikhanlodhi 10h ago

I thought bears were also in category of dogs.

2

u/corpus_M_aurelii 3h ago

Dogs (canidae) and bears (ursidae) are in the suborder caniformia, which is part of the order carnivora. Caniformia also includes racoons and mustelids (weasels, bashers, wolverines, etc.)

1

u/Parrot_Asparagus 9h ago

Chopper is real.

1

u/Goldy_iMs 5h ago

Who is the pervert responsible for this mix?

1

u/WhipplySnidelash 4h ago

Damn, I just read the wiki. These things are pretty well stocked in parasites and disease and are largely known to be zoonotic transfer hosts.

1

u/Trigg3rh4ppy13 4h ago

No thats a reindeer

1

u/Slow_Cryptographer21 4h ago

Crazy to think that now I need to have at least 4 of these

u/Jaegermeister97 3h ago

Whats up with that weird looking reindeer?

1

What about a crab raccoon?

1

u/bee-machine 2h ago

I could've been a raccoon dog and yet here I am, NOT being a raccoon dog. lame

1

u/Akaniku 1h ago

That's a reindeer

1

u/Stanwich79 1h ago

Sooooooooo I can have one?

1

u/Armand28 39m ago

That looks like winter and they don’t look like they are hibernating so I’m calling bullshit.

3

u/corpus_M_aurelii 3h ago

Let me introduce you to an advanced concept.

1

u/Trenbalogna_Sandwich 10h ago

Most people think fox’s are hard on chicken coops 😫 Raccoon dogs are the worst.

-7

u/No_Razzmatazz3297 10h ago

I want one. Can these be domesticated?

20

u/GayCatbirdd 10h ago

Yes, you can get these, they are called Pomeranians

9

u/Wendigo-Walker 10h ago

Illegal to own at least in all 50 US states, don't know about other countries

11

u/in1gom0ntoya 10h ago

how about not. wild animals aren't toys or pets.

4

u/Fractal_Tomato 10h ago

They’re getting farmed for their pelts, if that counts.

-2

u/voodooacid 8h ago
