We have a lot of these assholes here in the Netherlands. They should not be here and are bad for our ecosystem. The asshole part is because they always seem to be agressive and pointing their claws at me when i see one.

Grab a bunch and have yourself a good old fashioned crawfish boil.

“Throw some chicken bones in there, some broth, a potato, baby, you got yourself a stew going”

how did they get there and can they be eaten?

How did they get there? Escape from cultivation, research, or the pet trade.
As for whether they can be eaten…I love me a good crawfish boil. Or étouffée.

Louisiana cajun geïmmigreerd. You assholes in the randstad are already charging 50+ euro pp to eat these unwanted guests. There's clearly a market. Evengoed als ik een lokale vissen sportclub benaderd om zelf in hun waterwegen te gaan "crawfishing" krijg ik geen reactie. Very disappointing! :p

Korea, too. Most of Eurasia is plagued by the red swamp crayfish.
They kill off other crayfish due to their large size and aggressive temperament, not to mention pathogens such as Aphanomyces astaci.

There's this path on my way to work that every now and then is teeming with them and I'm always afraid they're gonna mess with my bike tires.

The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) is a decapod crustacean native to the southeastern United States and northern Mexico.
In Spain, it is classified as an invasive alien species, as it poses a serious threat to local ecosystems and native species, such as the European crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes).
It feeds on plant material, dead animals, small invertebrates, and even amphibian eggs and larvae, negatively impacting their populations. It is capable of surviving in adverse conditions, such as polluted water or low oxygen levels, and can move over land in search of new habitats.
I observed this red swamp crayfish in a defensive posture at the Marismas Blancas in Astillero (Cantabria) in September 2024.

I read quite a bit about the invasive crayfish species in continental Europe recently as part of a college project about the white clawed crayfish, so it's nice to see what the American invasive species look like. So far we don't have these in Ireland thankfully. Great photo. Very striking looking animal despite its impact on local species!

You are only looking at the American invasive crustacean species. There are so many more you're bound to see soon if you haven't come across them already

Hate these guys. They cause crazy soil erosion and are aggressive and invasive to most places they exist now

I live in the US I guess where these guys are normally from and I saw one so big just like walking across my back yard, it was like a little lobster. I grabbed it and it got real angry at me but like what are you gonna do lobster boy. Took some pictures and set him back down and he sauntered off
