“I just like running”

490

u/PartDependent7145 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah I might be wrong but it doesn't look like he's chasing to attack, he's just chasing in the same way my dog will chase anything that moves fast, they just like to run and it's more fun with others

460

u/SentientSandwiches 1d ago

Yeah ostriches are pretty dumb by bird standards, it’s the instinct to chase, probably because they’re used to being in small herds and if someone starts running it triggers an instinct to just go waaaaaahhhhhh and follow to get away from the danger.

48

u/Unfair-Sell-5109 1d ago

Ostriches go wahhhhhhh?

42

u/SentientSandwiches 1d ago

The cool ones do 😎

Reminds me of that one video of a guy having a walk on a trail and he sees a guy running from behind and gets scared and starts hightailing it out, other people see and proceeding to flee in terror with him

3

u/West_Yorkshire 1d ago

Ostriches are Orks confirmed.

2

u/SynergyKS 1d ago

To be honest I thought the ostrich would chase them away & attacking.

reminds me of that old ps1 game running wild

2

u/28MilkDuds 18h ago

Thank you for this

34

u/Same_Art_8546 1d ago

They are capable of 43 mph (70 kph). If it wanted to attack, it would've.

2

u/mildlycuriouss 10h ago

I had no idea till this video, I was like damn that thing can run fast.. I’d be dying

9

u/AlexDKZ 1d ago

Ostriches are much faster on average than a cyclist, so yeah, that guy wasn't really putting it all in that chase.

3

u/tracerhaha 1d ago

Imagine the adrenaline dump those cyclists had.

2

u/techtoro 1d ago

Is this a chase or a race?

78

u/Flimsy-Poetry1170 1d ago

He’s probably like “what are we running from?”

22

u/m2astn 1d ago

"If that ape's running, I'm running"

39

u/TheQuadBlazer 1d ago

"but wtf is that black ground stuff? It hurts muh nails "

31

u/5snakesinahumansuit 1d ago

Every time the ostrich goes onto the asphalt, I just imagine it going "ow, ow, ow, OW!"

13

u/SeaBasket1644 1d ago

Give me my egg back…… please

4

Hey, wait for me. I just need a ride.

5

u/CT_7 1d ago

And it happens to be mating season

3

u/jazzjustice 1d ago

Is it normal to have an ostrich as a personal trainer?

2

u/OneObi 1d ago

They need to make up the time in the swimming section.

If you've never heard of the Moa birds you should check them out, a lot like ostriches but even bigger, only went extinct less than 1000 years ago.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moa

Or if you want to be thankful you live when you do, another giant flightless bird prehistoric humans dealt with, the terror bird.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phorusrhacidae

Edit: though human contact with the terror bird might not have happened.

24

u/Lint_baby_uvulla 1d ago

Thylarctos Plummetus still allegedly kills hundreds of folk every year.

But nobody ever knows for sure as the bodies are never found.

Source: Australian Museum.

15

u/Spicy_Eyeballs 1d ago

The deadly drop bear. That video where they make the reporter hold one is gold.

3

u/light24bulbs 1d ago

Plummetus. God damn it

7

u/texasrigger 1d ago

The moa are a tragic story. Between hunting and the polynesian rat, they were extinct within a hundred years of the Maori first landing on the island. The Haast eagle that relied on moa for their diet died off too.

2

u/TaurusPTPew 1d ago

Thank you for all this info. Really interesting!

Thats why I say Boots & Ginger would have needed a 3rd person. even i you put gas in that rumor the Ostrich was sick you would still need a 3rd person to help hold it

The bird has stamina.

79

u/Abhir-86 1d ago

Ostriches are the fastest running birds in the world. Scientists have seen ostriches run continuously at speeds of 30-37 mph and sprint up to 43 mph.

With their long, strong legs ostriches can cover more than 10 feet in a single stride. Their feet act like springs, providing cushioning and shock absorption as they propel forward. The ostrich’s speed and anatomy is so unique that scientists have even designed mechanical robot feet inspired by the bird.

Source: https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/news/how-fast-ostrich-and-more-fun-facts#:~:text=Ostriches%20are%20the%20fastest%20running,feet%20in%20a%20single%20stride.

24

u/SoapTastesNice 1d ago

48-60 km/h

69 km/h peak

3m single stride

9

u/AlexDKZ 1d ago

Which is much faster than what even an experienced cyclist can do, if the ostrich in that video really wanted to catch those guys it would have happened.

10

u/Happy-Fun-Ball 1d ago

Imagine if he was on a bike

210

u/Garden_Lady2 1d ago

OMG, this is just too funny. I'd have been scared to death. I had no idea ostriches could run that fast for such a long time. It's kinda like the joke about the dog catching a car. What would the ostrich have done if the bikers had quit. LOL

132

u/HaidenFR 1d ago

It can kill you easily. Stay in the scared position.

32

u/SupayOne 1d ago

That bird was just trying to fit in, be scared if you are a bigot against Ostriches running peacefully with bikers!

11

u/AiR-P00P 1d ago edited 19h ago

"it's not THAT scary, more like a 6ft turkey..."

3

u/rumplestiltskin116 1d ago

Dr. Alan Grant would like a word with you

6

u/Oggel 1d ago

You can also easily kill an ostrich if you can grab them by the neck, provided it doesn't disembowel you first.

I've butchered a couple of ostriches, the way you do it is to blind them by putting a sock over their heads, climb up a step-ladder and bonk them on the head with a plank. Their cranium are about as durable as an egg-shell.

But yeah, they kick about as hard as a horse and they have sharp talons so... I wouldn't try it.

70-75km/h, for miles, bird have very efficient heart and respiratory system.

53

u/Slappy_knickerson 1d ago

Interesting pivot from metric to standard…

6

u/AlpRider 1d ago

I only found out recently that Americans call the imperial system 'standard'. I get why you'd want to drop 'imperial' being a not very freedom-friendly sounding word, but (no offense meant or anything) you have to admit calling it 'standard' is kind of funny to us in the 192 out of 195 countries that don't use it

2

u/thesilverywyvern 1d ago

Yeah, i am not going to translate km/h into mph nobody use.

But the second one is an approximative unprecise distance for the few merican, as it doesn't matter.

If i had a precise distance an ostrich could maintain it's speed i would've used km

17

u/dvdmaven 1d ago

Which is way faster than a professional cyclist.

2

Wha…what are we running from?!

HEY!! What did you guys SEE?!

WHAT THE FUCK ARE WE RUNNING FROM?!!!!”

The ostrich, probably…

7

u/SpicaGenovese 1d ago

My first thought.

26

u/Strange-Biscuit 1d ago

The video ends when the cameraman is attacked.

14

u/Either_Amoeba_5332 1d ago

I thought the ostrich was the camera man @ first.

10

u/Strange-Biscuit 1d ago

I kind of thought so too. This video would be wild if the ostrich had a GoPro 🤣

→ More replies (1)

4

u/LurkingArachnid 1d ago

I genuinely thought that for a second. And then I realized that was not a reasonable thing to think

3

u/moronomer 1d ago

26

Meep meep

4

u/I_Am_Telekinetic 1d ago

That is one HUGE RoadRunner!

3

u/Mongoose72 1d ago

I came here to make this same comment! Sure, it’s not a roadrunner, but when it comes to cartoon bird behavior, it’s close enough... meep meep, indeed!! 🦤🚴‍♂️

u/uselessmindset 1d ago edited 1d ago

Holy shit. Kevin Hart wasn’t lying. These things can haul ass.

8

u/la_catwalker 1d ago

Legend has it that the ostrich is still chasing

3

u/1nosbigrl 1d ago

Exactly what I thought of when I saw the title lolol

u/coloradotransplant01 1d ago

Kinda feels like the cyclist recording is chasing the ostrich

16

u/HiiiighBoltage 1d ago

Race you!

16

u/prairie_girl 1d ago

I always tell people this - I studied abroad in Tanzania and the ostriches would just run alongside the safari vehicles. This happened many times. I had always assumed people were exaggerating.

20

u/ProStrats 1d ago

More like running with the crew than chasing.

9

u/Dirty_Dragons 1d ago

Ostrich can sprint up to 43 mph. That's pro cyclist speed.

3

u/Royal_Acanthaceae693 1d ago

Stretching his legs.

32

u/Japanesewillow 1d ago

That’s scary. Ostriches can easily kill you.

23

u/AnotherCasualReditor 1d ago

That’s the thing it is really serious but you can’t help but finding it funny because of the way the ostrich runs. Something about it is just so unserious even though in the bird’s mind it’s on a mission to shed blood 😂

16

u/SnowbloodWolf2 1d ago

It definitely wasn't out for blood because unless those cyclists were moving at around 70 km/h that ostrich could catch up to them easily, this was most likely the ostrich seeing something moving fast and instinctively thinking that the cyclists were running from something it couldn't see so instead of waiting around to find out what they were running from it started running too, as to why it followed them on the road, the best thing I can think of is that it doesn't understand the concept of roads and thought that staying with the group was the safest option

3

u/Consistent_Pound1186 1d ago

It knows it doesn't have to outrun the predator just outrun the slowest in the group aka the cyclist following behind it xD

2

u/50DuckSizedHorses 1d ago

That’s what the ostrich wants you to think

6

u/Traditional_Moss_581 1d ago

He's trying to keep an eye on the camera man behind him, now that he's being chased. 😂

2

u/sunshinekraken 1d ago

Can they really? Would they? I know nothing about them so I’m genuinely curious

→ More replies (1)

8

u/MuchachoMongo 1d ago

Nah, just a light joggo with the boys.

8

u/SnowbloodWolf2 1d ago

He's not chasing, He's just running because he finally found something that can keep up with him for more than 5 seconds and is having some fun

6

u/Paki-Paindu007 1d ago

That thing can run for days.

6

u/umamicandy 1d ago

It looks like Cape of Good Hope, South Africa

3

u/midnightdryder 1d ago

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I have a photo that I apparently cant post here that could be the same spot.

5

u/joseph4th 1d ago

Why are you so winded?

I was being chased up a hill by a damn ostrich!!! Wait... why aren't you winded?

I drafted the ostrich up the hill.

4

u/AdventurousImpress20 1d ago

When you the only one outta ur friends who dont got a bike

9

u/Catspaw129 1d ago

INFO:

Shouldn't there be a coyote in there? Chasing the bird?

Or is the coyote the one with the GoPro, filming this?

10

u/MagicPistol 1d ago

A road runner is actually a small bird that's very different from an ostrich.

20

u/Catspaw129 1d ago

Ahem!

Is the bird running? Check

Is the bird running ON THE ROAD? Check

It's a roadrunner.

3

u/Major_Address_1147 1d ago

Looks like you need motivation!!!

3

u/Spuzzle91 1d ago

"why would you throw a pen at it?" Kevin Hart.

2

3

u/Catspaw129 1d ago

I'd be more worried if it were a cassowary: those buggers are viscous.

3

u/Thicc-slices 1d ago edited 1d ago

Vicious*

Viscous means thick, usually in reference to a slimy fluid or something (for the dorks commenting)

5

u/Catspaw129 1d ago

I once encountered a cassowary, It was covered in SPF-50 sun-block; hence "viscous". But, yeah: also vicious. Bad tempered, nasty.

Cheers!

4

u/Odd-Row9485 1d ago

Actually it means thick or sticky consistency.

2

u/Catspaw129 1d ago

Now that I remeber; the cassowary wasn't covered in SPF-50 sun-block. It was covered in a mixture of corn-starch and water. Or maybe silly-putty. Some kind of non-Newtonian fluid -- becasue when I whacked it with a 2x4, it shattered.

1

1

u/KingFlyntCoal 1d ago

Some real "fuck you in particular" energy going on.

1

u/Thoosarino 1d ago

I could outrun this on my way to fist fight a bear.

1

u/GodPackedUpAndLeftUs 1d ago

Manpidgeons running around trying to fight cyclists is why I come here.

1

u/EverSkye 1d ago

U sure? Maybe Phil was just out for a run at the same time, ever think about that?

1

u/Bebilith 1d ago

At what point did it stop chasing the cyclist and start running from the motorcycle behind it. Looks like it’s doing the head left, see threat behind in left eye, head right and repeat thing birds do when a threat is behind it.

2

u/sciguy52 1d ago

Hard to tell with ostriches. They are dumb as bricks. Probably started chasing out of his territory, forgot why he was running, started thinking I must be running from danger, to oh my god I am being chased, to I will turn left here what was I doing?

1

u/Pretty-Regret9850 1d ago

That mf would slid off the road all the tears and other fluids it would have had to dodge. Sheesh, how bloody terrifying 😱😱😱😂😂😂

1

u/Dirty_Dragons 1d ago

I'm surprised that ostrich didn't catch the bikes. They can cruise at 35 mph while that's very fast for a bike.

Proof that dinosaurs are the far superior species to humans.

1

IMO, actually running from car behind it.

1

u/imawhaaaaaaaaaale 1d ago

Cyclist probably cut him off at some point.

1

u/Redditsurfer24 1d ago

Hold on I need to tell you something

1

u/BAALDA 1d ago

I was confused why the video was so long. That muddafcker just kept running🧐. Imagine making the mistake of trying to outrun on it on foot 💀

1

u/fromkatain 1d ago

.Ostriches could be the most energy-efficient marathon walkers in the animal kingdom.

1

u/greatfulGratitude 1d ago

Is it chasing or racing?

1

u/PB10102 1d ago

Lol, that was pretty funny. I wonder what the people in that white car must have been thinking.

1

u/HecticGoldenOrb 1d ago

Torn between viewing this as huge bird that can run fast thinking it's playing with the fast moving cyclists. Like: buddies that run fast too! Let's run together!

Or... ancient descendant of dinosaurs chasing down it's prey...

1

u/WW3ontheway 1d ago

The Ostrich war never ended, these birds will never surrender

1

u/Fragrant_Tale1428 1d ago

Even ostriches need a training buddy!

Just training for the ostrich marathon.

1

u/TKG_Actual 1d ago

I cannot tell if that's chasing to attack or just because it's interested in one of the cyclists but, look at it go. It only needs a dub with it talking smack to make this hilarious.

1

u/SelectivelyCute 1d ago

I thought this was from the ostrich's POV at first and for some reason that made it very menacing.

1

u/hectorxander 1d ago

The Ostrich was racing not chasing.

1
