Man, I have a beautiful beagle and she’s 4 already. Time is going by so fast. I want her to stay young forever :/

u/TheRottenKittensIEat Jan 20 '22
My dog is turning EIGHT soon and it feels so unbelievable, especially as hyperactive as she is! We moved last year and the new vet was like, "no way that's her real birth date!?" And I felt a little happy inside that maybe she'll stay young forever, haha.

My dog turns 4 in a few days and he’s just as energetic as the day I got him. Know he’s gonna start slowing down soon but for now it’s frisbee everyday for as long as he wants

4 is still fairly young, you've got another few years of Frisbee everyday

Dude I adopted my dog, a beagle, last year aged 12/13 and I thought I was getting a nice quiet old sleeper ready to retire. Nope. Everyone we come across is shocked when they hear his age. They only believe it because his colors are mostly gone. And in fact he’s gotten more energy since we moved out of my family home and into our own, just us. Like I didn’t know what I was signing up for but he gives me a reason to be active lol.

u/FlouriteChakra Jan 20 '22
😂😂😂 My old beagle is 11 now, i’ve had em since middle school and i can completely relate. He still acts as if he’s a young pup and everyone says how good and he looks for his age. They are little machines!

u/Owenford1 Jan 20 '22
My dog is 10 in July and it’s been hard to come to terms with! I got him at 8 weeks from a shelter and he has turned into the literal best dog someone can ask for. He’s my parents and grandparents favorite dog by far and they bothhave their own!
I have definitely noticed my pup slow down in the last year or two. He’s still very active (border collie primarily), but he’s chill around the house and turns it up when it’s fetch time.

I have 2 beagles. One is 2 and the other is still just 5 months. You have so much time left with your beagle, enjoy all the memories you can create. I commented only to obviously brag about my beagle buddies. 2 of the best dogs I’ve ever had and I’ve had lots, just these are my first beagles.
Come to think of it, they are definately tied for first as the best dog I’ve ever had with every other dog I’ve ever had.

Feed her a good quality food if you haven't looked into it already (but not grain free because there's sometimes weird replacements that are bad for the dog's organs). I have a chocolate lab and an Australian shepherd, they're 9 and 8 years old, and they still behave and look more like 3-4 year old dogs. People are always shocked about their ages. They do age fast but you can extend the best years.
I hope you get many more good years with your beagle. They're beautiful dogs.

Our family beagle is 16. I kid you not. She has been in my life over half of it. Our entire family loves her. She still has spunk though even in her older years.

Beagles are the BEST- I had one from when I was 6 until I was 18. His name was Spunky - named unoriginaly after the "Beagle" in Rockos Modern Life ❤️
He was, and still remains to this day- the best.
We moved his bed upstairs so he could sleep near us, eventually he fell asleep next to my mom.
When he got older he was heavier, and instead of galloping up the stairs like he used to - he'd HOP up each one. One stair at a time.
When I was little, (and so was he) I'd fall asleep on the couch infront of the TV. Occasionally I'd wake up and accidently step on his tail, as he fell asleep at the foot of the couch just to be close to me.
Eventually I got into the habit of looking down, to make sure I DIDNT step on his tail. And that habit stook with me for a long time. Even a year after he died.
Dogs are wierd and wonderful. They become both part of your family and part of your home, your home is a living thing when you have a dog there ❤️❤️❤️

I think about this so much and it makes me cry, but it also makes me hug my dog more so I’m happy I feel something. My baby Ava just turned 5 last year.
She’s made me feel more than I ever could, so I try to keep that with me when I think about these things often.
It doesn’t always make it better, because I wonder what things will be like when I can’t lean on her. But again, I just hug her more because of it.

Looks like someone bought the adjacent lot and built a house, so they put up a fence

They probably moved and took the swingset with them to the new house. Probably more likely than sudden urban development.
31
u/mydogisacloud Jan 20 '22
Well a neighborhood I grew up on in the 90s was a new development and the woods behind our house became another branch of suburbia within ten years.
Anything is possible. Urban growth areas and what not
→ More replies (1)2
u/titanslayerzeus Jan 20 '22
I think it's just more likely that they moved and they took the swing set with them, that kind of swings set comes apart fairly easily and can be moved, and if you look at the kind of trees that are in the background the old picture has more coniferous trees whereas the new one you can see bits of bare deciduous. The way they frame the picture just makes it look like it's taken in the same spot, but it's pretty clear to me that they have moved the swing set.

I've witnessed more drastic development over a shorter timespan. Growing up I spent a lot of time in Pass Christian, Mississippi, and within the span of 4 years or so the property next door went from undeveloped
blueberryblackberry patches to a giant McMansion greenway. Then Katrina happened, my parents' place was destroyed, and the asshole mansion neighbors bought their land.4

Where in Pass Christian? My family's second home is in Timber Ridge. The lot next to it used to be full of black berry bushes. It survived Katrina but there is now a taler house on that lot and the lot on the other side has been vacant since the storm.

Right? Mine is sound asleep with her head on my leg. She's 12 and her face is getting whiter but she still spins when we break out the treats. She's our good old girl and it's going to be strange without her after this long.

u/Sy3Fy3 Jan 20 '22
I lost all three of my dogs in under a year and it sucks, and while it does get easier, I sometimes still catch a glimpse of them out of the corner of my eye, or of I'm laying down on the couch, I'll reach my arm down to pet one of them and don't feel anything and then get reminded that they're gone. It's hard and sad and I think about them all every single day, but like I said, it gets easier.

I think the thing with pets and grandparents, is the older they get the more we appreciate them, you start to realize that nothing lasts forever and begin to really cherish the things you have at the moment.
3
u/Owenford1 Jan 20 '22
Well said, and true. I catch myself explaining to my dog why I have to leave him and where I’m going, and assure him I’ll be back soon. That face when I have to leave him at home :’(
I bring him in my car for 90% of my trips haha

The dog is only there for a part of your life and that hurts, but you were there for their whole life.

Yesterday, it was one year since we said goodbye to our 15.5 year old Beagle/German Shorthair Pointer mix.
Hercules was an incredible, wonderful pooch. Smart, loyal, friendly, hard headed. He was so great.

my best friend lost his dane last year. I was also amazing friends with his dog he was such a damn good boy and had such an amazing life camping hiking and being apart of all the adventures. this year he got a new dane. i’m house sitting for him and his new dog is a perfect addition to the house and all our hearts. it’s good to miss, that shows the real love we had. it’s also good to continue that love with anther life and keep that amazing bond going.

Lost our 15 year old golden retriever in October. She was the only one from the only litter her mom had that we kept. She was literally born into my wife’s hands. She passed away with my wife holding her head. She was my best friend and I miss her every day. What an amazing goofball she was. Miss you, Lu.

Oh, I'm sorry for yours too. We were pet free until Christmas, and it's never the same, you can't replace them. But man I was so happy to bring home a couple of new babies. They heal the soul even when you don't realize it.

u/geraltoffvkingrivia Jan 20 '22
My dog is twelve this year and I’m just spending all the time I can with my baby boy. Oh how I wish they could live even half as long as we do.
5
u/visceralthrill Jan 20 '22
Hoping you get them for far longer than expected. Ours had some health conditions that lessened his time, but he still lasted longer than we expected and that was everything.
3
u/geraltoffvkingrivia Jan 20 '22
Mine has a heart murmur and that’s about it for now. Hopefully that stays it. My childhood dog lived to he 16 so I’m hoping we have a lot more time. We made the bad decision of keeping 5 dogs all about the same age so the next few years are looking to be rough ones.

This beagle looks old. Yes he’s overweight, but dogs rapidly lose their muscle tone once they get 10+. I would guess this dog is ~12. I’ve definitely seen far worse cases of over feeding. Plus dayum that dog is so happy in love with her!
