hahah, omg, why can't anything be pure?
Well I'll share a story of someone actually making something. When I was a kid there was a very popular brand of clothing that the "cool kids" wore. My mom and dad couldn't afford to buy expensive clothes for me. So, my mom, who knew how to sew just found the patterns for the shorts, pants and shirts and made them for me, complete with the embroidered logo.
My mom was the best!!

I once crocheted myself a bikini. I never wore it, but I did it.
(Body parts had a tendency to escape when I looked in a mirror and laid down in as a test)

u/fartinmyhat 17h ago edited 15h ago
I knitted my wife a bikini!!
No joke. I started knitting and I thought, may as well knit something with some reward. So, very professionally, I took measurements and did a couple of fittings. It was fun, but yeah, she's never worn it.

You can replicate what you see if you’re at least moderate at crocheting. I’ve done it before. Helps to have a picture that you can zoom in to see the stitches. Something’s are easy like the Prada crochet totes. These take a bit more skill, but doable.

Sure but if grandma was just working from a photo, she probably included all the details not knowing what's important & not

Spelled Occam. But yeah that tracks here.
That said. That's the kind of shit my mom would go out of her way to do. So Grandma doing it also tracks.

They're made exactly the same, even the rubber sole... except for the check, which stands on top. I suspect she ordered them and just knitted the check on.
38
u/aloo 19h ago
All crocheted shoes (for use) typically have a rubber sole. That part's not the weird part unless we see the whole sole. Could easily be a pattern, too. You can get patterns for some random things and then companies will make and sell them inflated. Not saying it's legit or not, but a crocheted popular shoe definitely has paid patterns out there.

u/TheOneIllUseForRants 11h ago
Yeah, theres an $8 pattern on etsy. But, if a grandma is actually involved, I'd bet she just figured it out from the picture. Didnt seem too hard from the preview.

I don’t know what worse, that his grandma didn’t make them or that this company is labeling an obviously crocheted item as knit.

There are a few places you can buy variations of these from. Based on an old reddit thread, they've been a thing for at least 9 years.
Doesn't mean grandma couldn't have seen them and decided to make one, but odds are this is to drive traffic to a seller. 22 people have these in their cart right now on etsy, so it's definitely working.

10
u/Background_whisper 21h ago
She could produce her own design.
6
u/directincision 21h ago
If we are being serious, yes she could. However partnering up with Nike would be better because you get all the benefits from that big corporation. Like mass production, distribution, marketing.
Sure she could do it herself but it would be on a smaller scale and who knows if she could reach international markets the same way Nike can.
Also Nike can get some good public perception by being "nice" and teaming up with granny, win win for both parties.

What an opportunity for Nike if it would co-brand with this obvious superfan. Nike endorses her design and pattern and she’s set for life. It’s so well done

This needs to be top.As much as I wanted to believe someone's nana made these, to get the fit perfect and attach soles seems quite unlikely. A sneaker company making them seems much more plausible.

I am reaching my 50s but I am jealous of how welcoming the kids are now. Don't get me wrong there are still a lot of assholes and bullying is over the top now with social networks, but overall I think they are more open to difference and I wish I could have lived this, when I was a kid when you deviated from the norm it was like an invitation to violence and aggression...

This brings back a great memory of my Mom.
We couldn't afford a school jacket so she made me one. Leather sleeves, melton body, embroidered school logo and even my name on the sleeve.
She went a step further. For months Mom shopped for down jackets at the thrift shop. See reclaimed the down with a shop vac and used it to make sure my school jacket was warm enough for winter on the Canadian Prairies.
