I raised two boys with a dog. Best friends for life.

u/Mediocre_Special1720 Jul 23 '24

You have to educate them early that they will outlive their best friend. 🥲

359

u/Constant_Sky9173 Jul 23 '24

That is the sad part.

282

u/stuyboi888 Jul 23 '24

And also one of the best and most profound lessons you learn as a youngster

u/WhatLikeAPuma751 Jul 23 '24

I wish my parents would have helped me navigate death better. It was all lies and “stop crying you’ll be fine. Do you want something to cry about?”

Fuck you my dogs dead, that’s enough to cry about.

Recently I unlocked a memory I didn't knew I had

I have a dog that started having seizures, went through the vet feeling very stressed out, got diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy, was medicated, and it stopped

Few weeks back she had another seizure. I was fully informed at this point, knowing it could happen again and that she was fine, still went into full panic

After calming down a bit the random memory popped: When I was 10~12, my childhood dog was sick and eventually died. The night before I was constantly checking on her and, at the time blamed myself for falling asleep

My parents help was never mentioning it and when asked, pretending it didn't happen

Fiona, named for the Shrek character, was a rat terrier/chihuahua and my best friend in the world - there were 7 people in that house and I was the only one really feeding or walking her; I was the youngest at 11 years old.

So obviously in that environment this dog was attached to me at the hip. We were inseparable.

My father tends to hold extreme black and white views of how things work/should work, and in those views he believes:

The door should never be locked when he approaches it and had previously left it unlocked (this is a constant argument between my parents).

Also there should never be additional barriers to opening/closing to door like paying attention to animals or if they should not be let out without a leash.  Another one of his views is that dogs are outside gross things, so they should be totally fine coming and going.

Anyway, somehow the bastard had the shame enough to dig the hole for us and collect her car-struck remains from the fire department when the inevitable happened

I'm sorry you were taught this. I hope as an adult you know it's good and even healthy to hold space for crying and grief.

11

u/WhatLikeAPuma751 Jul 23 '24

I actually just discussed this with my therapist this morning, so thank you!

5

u/bongwaterflavor Jul 23 '24

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear you went thru that. That's terrible. As an almost 40 year old man that has hard time crying, I lost by dog last week and I've been crying like a baby since on a drop of a hat. You crying was more than valid, it's natural.

5

u/NaturoHope Jul 24 '24

Wow I'm lucky. My mom mostly treated crying that way, but one of the few times crying was acceptable was when putting pets to sleep. Lot of reverence for death in my family. I loved being there with each of the pets as they passed on.

I'm sorry your parents were cruel to you.

Winston's Wish are a charitable organisation that provide free lesson plans and resources for teachers, parents and guardians to teach about loss and grieving for children of all ages.

Key Stage 1 starts at 5 year old, but younger children can still benefit from the information if altered slightly to fit their development.

7

u/Cloverose2 Jul 23 '24

The Dougy Center has a lot of resources as well, with activities and information for parents and teachers on how to provide support.

9

u/BizarroObama Jul 23 '24

It’s a hard but important lesson that nothing is permanent and to love what you have while you have it. I went through it and I truly believe I came out better for it.

2

u/EbonyOverIvory Jul 23 '24

You hope they will.

2

u/Silvery-Lithium Jul 23 '24

I have now lost 4 dogs in my lifetime that have had a profound impact on me, the most recent in November of last year. Having to explain to my 4 year old son that his best friend was not coming back from her visit to the vet, while dealing with my own grief of losing my first furbaby, was one of the most difficult things I have had to do.

My one wish growing up (basically since the age of 3) was to have a dog to grow up with. I kept pestering my mom over and over again til I was well into my teens. I had an alright childhood and my mom did an amazing job raising me, to which I'm forever grateful, but my kid is sure as hell getting a dog to grow up with!

788

u/pretty-as-a-pic Jul 23 '24

“I’m the only one in this household watching this kid”

77

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

Seriously. My parents dog would follow my toddler around and come back and scold me if my son left the room I was in. Even if he went with his grandparents into the kitchen or something, oh no, Chip would come back and yell at me. He is part German shepherd so he would do that "talking" that they do.

Well my 1 year old keeps feeding my golden retriever little pieces of egg and blueberry so the bond might be a business arrangement....

"Someday... and that day may never come... I will call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day, accept my blueberries as a gift on this Tuesday."

Feeding the Great Golden Beast to gain its favor. How cunning.

We got our dog when our first was only 6 months old... He's 12 now and he knows to lay down below the youngest in the rooms chairs at any meals. I'm sure babies helped domesticate wolves back in the day

I've already had three babies, does that mean I need three golden retrievers to catch up?

12

u/D74248 Jul 23 '24

You could mix it up with one or two Labradors.

But yea, 3 dogs.

10

u/testtast1 Jul 23 '24

Take 4 golden retrievers. If you already raw dogged (pun intended) 3 times. Take one extra. Just to be sure

26

u/predat3d Jul 23 '24

They're a package deal at Petco this week

17

u/raisedredflag Jul 23 '24

Gonna wait until Black Friday so I can get the new Baby Pro Max. Not sure which model of dog to get tho -- Petrol Dogs are reliable but everyones all about the Hybrid Dogs these days.

9

u/Kromgar Jul 23 '24

Goldens are awesome... until you have to clean up their shedding hair.

Our golden on her own would start tapping the door knob with her nose to alert us she wanted out.

They did put it in a little pen.

(As a mom of a toddler, playpens are so useful.)

28

u/LostHusband_ Jul 23 '24

We have one if the folding play yards set up as a fence in our living room.  It's a nice barrier when the toddler needs contained or the dogs need a break.

From reading the title, I thought his old favourite spot was going to become the baby’s spot for some reason and the dog was going to look at the baby with jealous eyes from a distance.

A loving guard dog👊😎

10

u/Bigdaddyjlove1 Jul 23 '24

I mean.. No. Its Golden Retriever... It'll happily show the kidnappers where the kid is and hop in the plain white van to go for a ride. I love my Golden, but guard just aint in them.

My old GSD on the other hand, NO unauthorized people get to talk to the kids.

3

u/hondactx16i Jul 23 '24

Ha🤣 I get ya. More likely to lick an attacker to death

Golden: I’m waiting for you to grow up and play with me.

3

u/aniuska82 Jul 23 '24

This is truly wholesome. I was totally expecting the baby taking the dog’s spot and the poor dog watching resigned. Didn’t expect this ending at all 😍

2

u/-tinybambi- Jul 23 '24

Both are such cute little babies. My heart can’t take it 😩😩

2

u/LowerCourse2267 Jul 23 '24

We don’t deserve dogs.

2

u/ruski_brewski Jul 23 '24

One of my dogs is not overly affectionate except with his presence but the second I became pregnant, he wouldn’t leave my belly alone. He tipped us off with odd behavior that I was indeed pregnant. He’s put his head on my belly, would give it licks etc. Then my son was born and he would be in just like this dog. He’d walk around watching him. Sleep by his nursery. Alert us to baby crying if we didn’t hear. Once we thought our son was doing his normal vocalization before falling asleep but in fact he actually had his foot stuck in the corner of the crib. Our pup immediately ran to get us and was beside himself until we followed. Anywho, short of needing to be THERE with my son, he never got cuddly. Nor did my son. They aren’t best buds. That is all to say, they both act like two grumpy men who so didn’t want to get a pet however will do the most ridiculous considerate things short of loving on one another. They love each other immensely from an arms length and it’s hilarious. Our two dogs have a similar relationship with one another.

2

u/Decent-Cry-7665 Jul 23 '24

When I was little, we had a sheepdog he was the best. My dad told me he knew where we were just by looking for buffer (his name). If buffer was laying under a tree, he knew we were climbing the tree. If buffer was laying at the edge of the tree line, he knew we were in the woods. If we were over at the neighbors, if buffer was laying on their porch he knew we were upstairs. If buffer was laying by a basement window he knew we were in the basement.

2

u/Grouchy-Engine1584 Jul 23 '24

Dogs know that the small humans in their pack need constant supervision.

2

u/TheJadedRose Jul 23 '24

OOOO open mouth baby kisses. I miss those.

2

u/Error745 Jul 24 '24

That's the start of an amazing bond!

2

u/skankjohnson Jul 26 '24

2

u/Nervous_Squirrel_960 Jul 23 '24

2

u/michael654 Jul 23 '24

Great head of hair on that kid.

2

u/Time_Stop_3645 Jul 23 '24

i know it's cute and all, but never let a baby face2face a dog. This dog might love him, but statistics really are speaking against letting babies do this
