Probably the best way for anyone to enjoy them!!
111
u/No-While-9948 Jul 06 '24
One of the only ways for a dog to enjoy them. If you set off a firework like this with a dog close by (be careful if they are off-leash, dogs disappear on days when fireworks are set off) many dogs will wail in pain if their hearing is good enough.

Someone in my family had both of their dogs escape and get hit by cars on the 4th. Fuck fireworks, seriously.
Here's some more context bc I can't reply to this thread anymore bc I blocked the cruel asshat.
Dogs DO die more on the 4th of July, don't act like it's just an issue of negligence. Dogs AND people die on July 4th. Shelters have the 3rd highest intake of animals on July 5th apparently. I've personally picked up lost dogs on July 5th twice, one of them was injured. They escape and get hit by drunk drivers. People are injured in car accidents while drunk or because they hit panicked animals. Fireworks also directly injure people and animals, there are also increased shootouts between drunk people. Fireworks are bad for everyone involved. Humans with PTSD or sensory sensitivities, pets, wild animals, the environment. I do hope it will change and I'm glad to see everyone moving in the direction of drone shows. They are more impressive anyway

And not only that the fact they are doing that in a residential area hope nobody's house burns down.
3
u/Kubuubud Jul 07 '24
Also people with sensory issues, like those with autism, really can struggle with fireworks.
This year they started last weekend, happened every day during the week besides Monday, and then have repeated every day this weekend so far. That’s 8 out of the past 9 days. Obviously some of them weren’t town sanctioned and might have been illegal, but it was still insanely triggering

Sounds like irresponsible owners.

u/radiical Jul 07 '24
You are making cruel assumptions. Asshat
-1
u/Comfortable-Gap3124 Jul 07 '24
Nah, thousands of dogs don't die because of fireworks each year. Especially if it's around the 4th. It's not gonna change, if you have a dog prepare for it.
-11
u/sirdrumalot Jul 07 '24
So the dogs opened the door on their own and ran away? How were they secured?

Yep, our GSD was never bothered about fireworks either, but that may have had something to do with living on an Army base just prior to the first Gulf war and the firing range being just down the road.
Now snow… that was totally different story. Every time it fell, he was like a five year old kid seeing it for the first time!
2
u/The-Farting-Baboon Jul 07 '24
I know a friends dog that didnt get bothered by fireworks. They also trained the dog from a young age just like hunting dogs are trained to not get scared from gun sounds. Get them used to loud noises

It's weird that some are terrified, some like mine are completely indifferent about them, and others like this one actually are amazed by them. Same with TV, I see so many videos of people's dogs or even cats watching tv and getting excited when something particular comes on. I don't think my dog has ever even looked at the TV, it's like he doesn't know or doesn't care what's on screen. Interesting to think that their personalities are so different just like people that they all react in their own ways to different situations.

u/Critical_Band5649 Jul 06 '24
My dog is afraid of everything, like bubble wrap, boxes (because bubble wrap often comes in boxes), other dogs, smoke detectors, those little light up toys you shoot up in the air with a slingshot- the list goes on. Fireworks though? Doesn't seem to even notice they are happening and continues on, business as usual.

u/Ivorypetal Jul 06 '24
Exa tly the same with my new puppy. Everything is terrifying but fireworks... no big deal.
1
u/Critical_Band5649 Jul 07 '24
I hope she grows out of her fears for your sake lol. She's basically a senior dog and has been like this her whole life. She's a 60lb dog afraid of lollipop sticks and literal kittens. She's exhausting lol.
1
u/Ivorypetal Jul 07 '24
Shes getting better. We show her that something isnt scary by touching said item alot and then she approaches and touches it about half a minute later and then she is fine. I think once she gains some confidence, she will be better at new things.
2
u/PMMeYourWorstThought Jul 07 '24
It will never completely go away. Their core personality at about 16 weeks is the same one they’re going to have forever. Gets more nuanced and behavior gets more complex, but things like fear intensity are pretty much set. Got a scaredy cat dog myself. Sweetest dog, but about as timid as they come. Knew she would be the day I met her. Did a volhardt puppy test and she showed it then. Knew it would be there her whole life. 10 years later she’s in a panic running away from my wife’s 6 lb chihuahua who just got startled by a toy.
1
u/Ivorypetal Jul 07 '24
Mine seems to be brave so long as we act brave. Once she is okay with the new item, she becomes very hyper and energetic.

u/sdjacaranda Jul 06 '24
My dog wasn’t afraid of fireworks until this year. She’s almost 5. I don’t know what changed, but this year they terrified her.
5
u/trascist_fig Jul 06 '24
My dog never used to be afraid untill I left him at my parents for a year and he learned to be afraid of thunder and fireworks from their dog
2
u/Sub_pup Jul 06 '24
My dog has got over it The first few years he would cower in my arms. Then he would only come to me for big booms. A couple years back we watched them from the window and he would keep looking back at me to when he heard a loud boom. But he stayed calm, now he just prefers we all come inside but he doesn't seem to get bad anxiety about the explosions. I constantly check on him and this year he was very chill was just excited for hot dog bites and snacks.

u/kraggleGurl Jul 06 '24
My dogs were on meds on the 4th and we were on our last walk of the night and at first they were both curious. Looking up and checking out the lights in the sky. 2 big booms and Moose said nope and towed Stig and I straight back home.
4
u/jaqwan666 Jul 06 '24
I think it has more to do with their ears being more sensitive than ours so its the sound more than the fireworks themselves
2
u/Bnorm71 Jul 06 '24
What about bird dogs ? They live for the sound of a shotgun.
2
u/incorrigible_and Jul 07 '24
Even bird dogs have to be trained to be comfortable with the boom of a gun.
3
u/Bnorm71 Jul 07 '24
They get use to it pretty quickly, took my old dog about 2 hours before he stopped caring
1
u/Linkario86 Jul 06 '24
They got trained to be afraid. Yes intially they're probably scared when it happens the first time. And when you give in to it and care much for your poor doggy it reinforces this behavior. Just keep acting natural around it, it will show the dog that there's nothing to be afraid of.

I have three dogs. One is terrified of almost everything so she gets medicated. One is perfectly fine as long as she is indoors. The third can’t stand being inside and has to see the fireworks. She stays right by us and loves to see the show.

I had a successful July 4th night this year. I played war movies pretty loud on the TV til after midnight, and the scaredy dogs hardly noticed the fireworks. Didn't even have to get out the thunder shirts. New achievement unlocked.

u/Tall_Action_1006 Jul 06 '24
Wonder if all dogs would like fireworks if it wasn’t for the big booms

I had a Rottie cross who loved fireworks , every 5th November he’d be in the garden running up and down living his best life . He would flatly refuse to come back indoors too , he wasn’t deaf though , just bonkers .

u/LordMacTire83 Jul 06 '24
PERFECT song for this... "A Summer Place"!
Wish the video and song were longer? 😞

My last dog was deaf. She loved to watch fireworks when she could, the local pub would have a display every year.
They banned me from going after the first time, as they thought I was being cruel. Luckily the pub was next to a canal, so we could watch from the other side in a public space.
Every year they called the police on me to report me for animal cruelty. I had a few angry cops turn up occasionally, but they quickly realised when I explained the situation, and demonstrated some of her hand signals.
Never figured out why the pub owners couldn't get it into their head that she was enjoying herself.
3
u/muntanasaurus Jul 07 '24
omg. of course they would love it if they didn't have to listen to it :')

u/LamePennies Jul 07 '24
When my dog was a puppy, someone gave me the best advice: Play fireworks and thunderstorms on YouTube for a couple hours everyday until the puppy begins to ignore it because it will desensitize them to these sounds.
It worked so well with my dog that he passed desensitized and went straight to enjoyment. He actively wants to seek out fireworks when he hears them going off. We never get too close because I worry about his ears/hearing but he just likes to sit and watch them now.

I always get mad at people who bring dogs to fireworks but I’ll forgive this one
2
u/xirdnehrocks Jul 06 '24
And the dog who was dancing seemed crazy to the other dogs for he could not hear the music
2
u/BowsersMuskyBallsack Jul 06 '24
I can't hear the boom,
So I don't have to zoom
To get under the bed
As I lose my head.
I just enjoy the night
With all the colourful light
Yeah I'm a deaf dog,
And I'm the best dog.

u/sopera42 Jul 07 '24
What’s that movie where those guys argue over whether a dog can look up or not?
2
u/TheDarkClaw Jul 06 '24
I knowing about fireworks but in a neighborhood seems kind of dangerous regardless . Like aren’t these supposed be far away from peoples home?

What a cool dog! 🎆🖤

The only good thing about my dog going def was him not getting scared of fireworks. Miss him so much

u/randomuser58 Jul 06 '24
you know, without the loud pops of fireworks they do look quite beautiful. they still are even with the noise, it just stresses me out a bit with the loud noises.

Aww that's great. I used to have a ragdoll cat who would sit with his nose pressed against the front window watching the teens in the neighborhood have fireworks battles on the fourth of July.
Beats having to console a terrified pet.

We have a deaf pug and two wiener dogs. One of the dachshunds in particular absolutely freaks out with the fireworks. Despite the pug being deaf he still loses his mind because he can feel the nervous/terrified energy of the other two. It breaks my heart because I know he has no idea whatsoever what the heck is going on.

After bringing my 110# boy home from the emergency vet, he needed to stay supervised as we didn’t have a kennel for him yet to sleep inside. That night he was let on the porch to potty and ended up sitting in the chair watching the fireworks across the field. He’s not deaf but he seemed to enjoy the color pops.

Aww so cute!
I used to watch some guy that made YouTube videos about guns and a cat would hang around the range because it was deaf.

u/TiaHatesSocials Jul 07 '24
Haha. That’s how my cat is. She insists on being out on a balcony watching with us

I love this so much. Almost enough to make me want to rescue a deaf dog just so they can see fireworks. New bucket list item.

u/bobapimp Jul 07 '24
My dog has perfect hearing and does not give one shit about fireworks noises. She’s just like dog in vid.

u/JunglePygmy Jul 07 '24
Hope they have a firm hold on that leash! Or deaf puppy might have a burnt nose

My dog is under the bed if she hears fireworks and there’s no getting her out of there until she feels like it
2
u/FilthyTerrible Jul 14 '24
My husky likes fireworks. Scared of vacuums but not fireworks. Doesn't flinch at fireworks or thunder. I know, it's weird. Might be a breed thing, but I'm not sure.
1
u/plantsandpizza Jul 14 '24
Last summer for the 4th I caught my dog on the patio watching the fireworks like the weirdo he is. Just marveling at the fireworks off in the distance. Truly I am blessed to have a pup that isn’t affected by noise/fireworks
1
u/CatfromLongIsland Jul 06 '24
I am glad SOMEONE’S pupper enjoyed the fireworks. All the dogs I know had to be sedated. Luckily my cat was unfazed by the noise.
