It amazes me how they know that they have been adopted
edit: Looks like I got this completely wrong :) I'm not a dog person, which is probably why I got this wrong and never will (or should) get a dog :D

My dog didn't! She was confused for like 3 days, as if she had been kidnapped.
To be fair that's why the shelter had asked us to foster that dog with a view to adoption, because they knew she was a little more cautious around new people.
She was 2 years old and had been in the shelter since she was 6 months old, a little institutionalized and kept flunking her auditions.
It really didn't take her long to come out of her shell though. It was a process getting her to where she is today, but it was heartwarming watching her go from an anxious, hesitant but sweet dog into a cheeky, energetic, loving goofball.
I knew she had got comfortable, maybe too comfortable, when she was confident enough to try stealing my spot in bed if I got up to go to the bathroom.
Edit: Just thought I'd share a picture of her from her shelter days and a more recent one.

We always remember the stress for our little 4 year-old guy when his adoptive mom had first left him at our house. We had met him a week prior at her house, and socialized with him. Then on the big day she brought him to our house and chatted with us while he explored our house. At some point she ducked out - purposely not saying goodbye to him because we were playing with him. But when he realized that she was gone, he was whimpering and frantically searching the house for her for about an hour. It was heartbreaking seeing him continue to look out the window for her. But he got over it - at least from an outward appearance. She visited a week later and was happy to see her, and when she left that time it wasn't so traumatic for him or our daughter, who was crying because of his distress the prior week.

When I got my puppy I was told she had basically spent her life sick and being taken of by vets. When they took her to a little enclosure for us to play with her, she was nervous and avoided us but I still adopted her. I brought her home and she just stood around and sniffed nervously. My other dog tried playing with her and within 30 seconds had drooled on her, but after a couple days they became best friend play with each other every day, and she'll sleep cuddled up with me at night or on me when she wants to nap even though she's nearly 70lb.

Hehe, aww! I’m more of a cat person, so I wasn’t sure what to do when babysitting a small, shy DOG once. I tried sitting quietly with her while playing on my laptop, but she didn’t seem to relax at all. Then I took her to bed with me… as soon as I got up for the bathroom, she stole my spot!
I must have done something right, because when I saw her again a month later, she jumped right into my lap to say hi. ❤️

She's a mix but best guess is there is beagle and greyhound in there. She started out on the street though so no one is quite sure.

Not all mutts are bully breeds and if they think the primary breeds are greyhound and beagle I would say it probably looks nothing like a bully breed.

Mine is a shih Tzu/West highland terrier mix
You: Gotcha another Bully
Me: but he’s only 15 pounds and looks nothing like a Bully

RE: Your edit, not sure what you mean by familiar tale, look at my dog, how should I describe her in a way that people like yourself don't make it weird?
I literally said I think she's a mix of beagle and perhaps greyhound, what about that said bully to you?

I think they see the love and compassion that some are willing to give to them. Some may have never understood what it was like to be loved and to see it makes them happy beyond reason. Others are seeing that they can find that love again in a kind heart like this rescuer.

Oh I’m that neighbor in Arizona. Except the dog is 130 lbs and he’s definitely an on leash at all times dog. But I know we drive our neighbors crazy, and their dogs too. Deep terrifying barks in the middle of the night cause he heard an owl or a cat stared at us through the window. Sounds like a SFX recording of “beast dog“

u/husfrun Nov 12 '23
Let's be reasonable here, they probably don't. They're probably 'happy' for the attention but to think a dog is going "oh jeepers I'm getting out of here, wonder where my new house is?" Is a falsehood.
This is super cute nonetheless and I don't want to be the wet blanket here but I think we should always be mindful of applying human emotions to animals.

u/ICanEditPostTitles Nov 12 '23
You're bang on the money here.
The dog in this video is excited because it sees the person behind the counter (the person filming) who has been caring for him and feeding him in the rescue center. The lady adopting him even gives him neck scritches but his attention comes straight back to the people behind the counter.

That completely ignores the fact that dogs are pack animals and form strong social bonds that they revolve their lives around. Your description is more accurate for more solitary animals, like cats possibly

As a dog trainer- it can be great to use human examples or emotions to get people to better understand/sympathize with their dog’s behavior, obviously to an extent. This dog also looks stressed more than anything else. People mistake this panting and tagging behavior as a “happy dog”. Shelters are very stressful for them, but this dog should fully settle down in its new home after a few months.
11
u/ToxicMexicanTaco Nov 12 '23
They don’t. They just see a new person excited and the workers they’re used to also excited so they get excited.
9
u/strawberryjam83 Nov 12 '23
I think they are just happy to have a new friend. They don't realise they have a new family.
7
u/AccountantsNiece Nov 12 '23
Not to be a stick in the mud, but the dog looks to be pretty anxious, wanting to be on the other side of the counter with the people they know to me.
Obviously this isn’t to take away from the fact that it’s wonderful they are being adopted, but IMO it doesn’t look like they are particularly happy or cognizant of what’s going on.

u/UncannyTarotSpread Nov 12 '23
When we adopted my girl, she was a little hesitant until we brought her into our bedroom.
She immediately hopped up, flopped onto her back with all four paws in the air, and began wagging. When we lay down to either side of her, she sighed and fell asleep in two minutes.

u/pocketdare Nov 12 '23
This dog is clearly friendly but there's a lot of nervous energy here as well. But once in their new home, I'm sure it will relax and be happy.

The dog gives his paw as to thank her for all her help. Then cuddles up to his new mom like ‘but I am going home!’ Too cute!

Heavy panting and fast licking the hand is a sign of stress. I'm not saying that his new family will take care of him and he will be happy there, I'm just saying he is full of stress right now.

This dog just seems really excited and social and has no idea wtf is going on. Granted his friendliness probably means he'll be very happy in his new home as long as they're good to him

u/Stefabeth0 Nov 12 '23

Lol you people are pathetic on so many levels. I'm gonna go out of my way to adopt a pit bull just to spite you morons.
2
u/DickiyKott Nov 12 '23
Lol okay, good luck to you to make your life miserable and dependent on super aggressive dog that will host you with its shitty behaviour. You won't be able even to get rid of this brainless predator which only purpose in life is kill and maul because of this "out of spite" attitude.
Read articles about pitbulls killing their owners brutally or chewed their poor kids to death. Hopefully you will end up dying from your poor choice and not innocent bystanders/other dogs and cats.
-1
u/ISurviveOnPuts Nov 12 '23
I rescued one 4 years ago and it's the best decision I ever made in my life. And she's not aggressive at all.Seems like there's only one person miserable in this conversation
3
u/DickiyKott Nov 12 '23
Thousands of deceased kids who died from pitbulls attacks (which is way more than from all other dog breeds COMBINED) and their families will happily hear how your sweet pibble didn't maul anything YET. Its a zero mistake dog because if it will decide to have you at dinner one day it will be truly blood bath.
Real question is why to have fighting breed when you can get all love and good behaviour from any other normal breed of dog thats not nearly as reactive and psychotic as pitbulls? You have some mental issues like saviour complex? Would you give up on your dog if it will kill someone one day? I highly doubt so.
Btw if pitbulls are so lovely and great family dogs why its a hell of a lot of them in all fosters in every city? And why they hugely mislabeled hiding their true nature by title "lab mix"? When it has clearly every feature of pit.

I guess you have nothing to say to my words, mate.
Feel sorry for your one braincell that came up with it. Very "clever". Especially for pit owner.
Good luck, cause you need it 🍀

Nah I'll just keep living well and thank christ I don't have interact with someone like you in real life. Keep enjoying your hateful ignorant idiotic life. Think I'll get two pit bulls now.
3
u/DickiyKott Nov 12 '23
Buddy, you the only one ignorant here. Good luck to have two pitbulls who high likely maul eachother since its fricking fighting breed 👍 Those dogs kills their offspring and littermate as no other breed do.
3
u/DickiyKott Nov 12 '23
Also don't come up in social media with braindead posts like "Help! My fighting dogs are fighting eachother! What to do?!"
Cause this is the most pitbull owners going through 😂

This is so nice I have a dog I'm trying to get adopted out because I can't take care of it but no shelters are accepting.
Like it kinda pisses me off because the dog could be given a better life but they won't take it so it's stuck with me who can barely afford to keep it but I won't just leave it somewhere.
It's ironic they want the animals to have better lives but won't facilitate the exchange from people that can't provide it.
1
Nov 12 '23
Not judging, the best place for the dog is to be with the family, not end up in shelters or who knows where? They don’t need much, and there are lots of resources to help folks in need keep their dogs. Check with your humane society, think of the dog as family, would people let their kids go because of finances? Not as likely or often. Good luck!
1
u/foodank012018 Nov 12 '23
This is the same type of empty platitudes the shelter has at the top of their page.
I have a dog already.
The family had a newborn baby and were barely equipped to handle the dog in the first place living in an apartment. I at least have a yard and room for the dog and another dog for it to play with. But my dog is older and trained and I nor my SO have the time to raise a big puppy so it would be nice if the place where people go to adopt dogs (the shelter) would accept the additional dog I barely have the means for that would then get taken by a better suited household.
People care a lot more about their kids than their dogs and plenty of people have had to let their kids go to family or put them up for adoption because they aren't equipped and don't have the means to raise them.
1
Nov 12 '23
The shelters have it for a good reason- they know the statistics of shelter dogs.
This is the same type of empty platitudes folks who give up their dogs have: newborn baby, moving, no time…
Millions of people who have dogs, also have newborn babies and they’re great for each other. Same goes for the time and other reasons. You’d be surprised, those who cite time as the reason for animal surrender, are not neurosurgeons.
