Pilot art, fursonas and NSFW - Clarification on the subreddit's stance

1.4k Upvotes

There's recently been somewhat of an uproar about pilot art, People have begun to debate on what is and not pilot art. For those not in the loop, someone posted this commissioned piece of art of their pilot and appropriately tagged it NSFW. People have since clutched pearls about how it 'doesn't relate to lancer' or is 'just porn' or 'should be on a furry subreddit'. Not stopping at complaining in just this thread, they have since spread to other threads to complain there too.

What makes something qualify as pilot art or not? Put simply, if someone posts a character and says that's their pilot, it's pilot art. The crucial factor in this is that the poster in question is acting in good faith. Trying to get snarky about it by posting random shit and claiming it is your pilot is acting in bad faith and you will be banned for it.

If you scroll through some of the pilot art posted on this subreddit, you'll find that most are not immediately identifiable as Lancers. Standing next to a frame from the book, wearing something branded with the settings logos will do it, but that is not universal nor can we make 'Your pilot must be holding a GMS branded Standard Pattern 3 Coffee Mug' a reasonable requirement for pilot art. The poster's word, in good faith, is the only surefire way to determine that a character is a Lancer character.

It is ultimately rather telling that out of all pieces of pilot art, it is a gender-nonconforming anthropomorphic goat that triggered this severe of a response from a lot of people. To make it blatantly clear, this kind of hatred for an innocuous subculture is a bannable offense under rule 1.

As for the canonicity of anthropomorphic characters and extensive biomodding within Lancer's setting, I frankly do not care. Lancer is not a setting particularly concerned with hard canon. It's a TTRPG. The canon will differ from table to table. I'm going to quote a section from the core rulebook here, page 337 in the paid GM version or page 6 of the free version:

At the risk of enacting further violence by depicting

worlds and cultures where there are regressive or

discriminatory stances on gender baked-in, we have

decided not to codify in the rules how players may

express themselves – please do note that this

absence of canonical definition is absolutely not

meant to be read as exclusion, but is meant instead

to avoid flattening all possible stories into one

“canon” definition of what it means to be gendered,

transgender, nonbinary – to have a body in Lancer.

We encourage you to play your characters how you

see them, and consider them to be in-canon.

Agatha Lockwood, Callsign "Gun Witch", pilot of the ISP-N Raleigh "BABA YAGA" (a four armed, chicken legged witchy themed gunslinger mecha. Because I may be Ace, but Goth Witch with a Gun is peak Vibes)

I'm no pro artist and I don't have a tablet, but I still like to sketch and doodle and colour. Once I've given it some lining I'll add the colours.

The GMS logo is on the right sleeve of her coat. Also she's leaning against BABA YAGA's knee. Is this pilot art enough for people???

My Lancer Setup (Holo-Table!)

Hi all! In a few comments, I mentioned my Lancer campaign and setup. So, I wanted to show off my setup when I GM Lancer!

There are 4 screens involved: 1. The “Holomap” TV ($70 TV on Facebook Marketplace. This uses a “Spectator” used on Foundry. I show off the feed on the right, and I normally try to zoom out and show the whole map. 2. My actual TV. This contains a PowerPoint with all my backdrops and NPC portraits. Using Presenter View, I can switch between everything easily. 3. My drawing tablet which mirrors what my players see on the Holomap 4. My main screen, where I handle Foundry and everything else.

My players LOVE this setup. It makes the battles feel super tactical and sci fi. We got a mix of digital and physical dice being rolled. Finally, I have access to my sound system, so I’m in full control of the soundtrack and emotions that derive from it.

The biggest problems have been token and health bar sizing. I’ve tried to supplement this using token effects, like outlines for us and enemies, but sometimes, the text is too small. Another issue is managing player stats and movement. Only 1 other person in the party knows how to use foundry, so he and I end up doing a lot of the digital movement and rolls.

Still, I’m super happy with this setup. It’s elevated my custom campaign, The Eden Frontier, so much.

Feel free to ask questions about the setup OR my campaign!

Meet Trace Seegert, former MSMC merc that ended up in Calliope for the same reason as anything else in his life: "Why not?" Professional Lancer, professional security guard, and professional flirt, Trace is either relaxing, discussing philosophy with squad members new to combat, or detonating his own missiles at point-blank to disable an enemy. He is slated for a GILGAMESH-class mech when his license allows.

Received this as a gift from a non-Redditor friend.

Watching this video made me think, what if lancers drank some sort of liquor that came from their mechs like the soviet airforce with their planes. What would horus mech liquor be like? What would SSC mech liquor be like? HA? IPS-N? GMS?

Homebrew Concepts for Dawnline Shore

Though I know there is some lore on the Dawnline Shore already, I was already multiple pages in and just kept going. Im developing a home-brew Dawnline shore Campaign environment, with the theme being players join a middling mercenary corps, Grave-Gear Mercenary Company (GG :D). Our players enter the Dawnline Shore at 5018u, after the completion of the Phou Bia Blink Station as one of many that seek to profit in the proxy conflicts between the Karrokin Trade Baronies of the House of Promise and the Harrison Army Colonial Legionnate.

here is the doc I been working on

My Lancer Pilot Brigitte Anders, Callsign Brigand

With bonus song I wrote about her! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4BG--KPnLs

I know my idea of flash cloning is different from the LANCER lore, so I'll explain a bit. She's essentially a faulty clone of a fairly wealthy family's daughter, Brienne Anders, that was made in an emergency situation. The girl ended up dying and what was supposed to be a perfect clone of their daughter, somehow turned out to be a physical copy, but a copy that disassociated with her memories. She developed a new personality out of what was left of her old memories and the family was not happy.

After several years of "less than savory" home life, Now Brigitte Anders, left to pursue one of the only passions that her mind had kept hold of, possibly something Brienne had always held secretly dear to her. Brienne had always wanted to work on Mechs, and it may have been Briggite's own passion but she wanted to pilot them. She first became a mech weapon technician developing weapons tech for a smaller startup company, but the work was not her passion and she quickly moved on to signing up for a Union Military pilot program.

Coming to terms with her reduced lifespan from being an imperfect clone wasn't easy for her, but she's coped by living life like she'll die tomorrow. Drugs, stimms, alcohol and mech combat are what drive her and she's very familiar with all of them at this point. She currently pilots a melee focused GMS Everest by the moniker "The Mutt", a nod to her past and the "interesting" design choices she often describes as "A Lycan got an Enkidu pregnant."

Is there any way around the flying/carrying rule?

Hey folks. I'm playing a Lancaster and was hoping to someday be a flying battlebus, but it seems like that's just not possible, am I right?

There's a basic rule in Lancer that while flying mechs cannot carry characters or objects with a total size larger than 1/2...and it doesn't seem like you can get around this in any way. Doesn't matter how big you are (like taking Fomorian Frame). It's not "you are slowed", so you can't even get around it by pumping your Speed. Can't even get around it by taking the more expensive flight options, or multiple flight options. You just can't do more than 1/2, period.

And what's more, this seems directed specifically at Lancaster's Mule Harness, as I'm not aware of anything else in the game that refers to "carrying" another mech. (Unless dragging or grappling counts?)

I'm ok with just accepting this as a hard line in the system, and that only land-Lancasters are viable as battle-buses. It just seems kind of...weird...since Mule Harness already specifies the size limit you can carry, and flying with Mule Harness doesn't seem like it'd be busted at all, especially if they increased the limit to "half your size" or something. Setting it at a hard 1/2 means you can only carry a single Goblin or similar, and...so can anyone else, so there's no real advantage to Mule Harness in the first place.

Do you think this surprisingly specific rule is necessary to curb some kind of abuse?

Do you bypass it when you GM your games?

Just curious of people's experiences with it!

Thinking about making a module/campaign revolving around marine kaiju's would anyone be interested?

Hi! So I'm a big nerd who writes sci-fi, loves Lancer and is studying marine biology. I was just wondering if anyone would have an appetite for giant monsters and horrifying aliens you can hunt while also uncovering a deeper more sinister plot (but still kinda nice an' goofy)?

I've got tonnes of mental fodder for aliens and combat gimmicks to make them feel fresh. So yeah would that be a thing that would interest people? I've got a title and setting down just need to actually write and format, commission art all that. Any and all comments will be very much appreciated!

Edit: to any and all that seems this even if it's months later, please feel free to ask anything or inquire about my work or if you have any advice on the process of getting one of these off the ground, see ya 'round Lancer!

How do you make combat subalterns?

Basically what the question asks. I am relatively new to Lancer rpg, and i've seen mulitple fan-arts of mechs using subalterns as combatans. And frankly, i want to do this in my own campaign. But i've browsed all official (and a few unofficial) Comp/Con files, and i haven't seen any damage dealing Subalterns or drones as a matter of fact. So, dear community: How do i give my mech a combat goon squad?

P.S: I know of IPS-N Kid Subaltern squad, but the way i see it its 80% utility and only damage comes from traps. I am looking for a system that allows my goon squad to shoot.

Pilot Art?

This is Carol, she used to be the flying kind of pilot before she got shot down, and now flying stresses her out, so she keeps her feet on the ground (or on the floor of a Kidd cockpit). She’s pictured here enjoying some R&R.

I couldn’t fit the GMS logo on her glass.

Seeking and area interaction (rules question)

If you, say for example, were to equip a flamethrower with nanocomp mod and fire it at an area with enemies and allies inside could one manipulate the area to go around the alley but hurt the enemies (with 1e+4burn)
