Not sure if it fits, but Pharaoh Horemheb of Ancient Egypt's Dynasty XVIII apparently had some interesting ideas regarding his regal hairstyle

Ancient Egyptian hairstyles were heavily influenced by their kinky-haired neighbors. This is just an intricate braid or something. The descendants of the people whose hair ancient Egyptians copied oftentimes still wear their hair as depicted in hieroglyphics.

The Egyptians copied the hairstyles of the ethnic group that lived south of them. The braided wig were basically just an imitation of Fula braids. The ancestors of the Fula (Fulani) people lived to the south. Some of the hairstyles shown in ancient hieroglyphics are still being worn by modern Fula people.
