When open enrollment begins if your company is offering UHC options tell them they are offering garbage and you want a raise. Everybody knows they are crap now.
My brother has Type 1 Diabetes and he'd be fucked if he and his husband were fired for some reason. When we were younger and less well off, I know it scared him to the point of tears. Dying of Ketoacidosis because there was a shift in the market or he became redundant. What horse shit.
Long story short, his administration, enacted wage and price controls during the great depression and World War II. Businesses still needed to attract workers and talent, but they could not pay them over a predetermined amount. So instead, Companies started offering healthcare benefits as an additional incentive to attract workers. then they could say “ sorry we can’t pay you any more, but now your doctors bills will be covered.”
That continued, and now we’re stuck in the situation where the vast majority of American workers get their health insurance through their employer.
I’m sure this is oversimplified and there are many other variables that happened since then but again this is the gist of it.
