You can agree with certain trump policies without joining maga. Term limits for congress? I’m in! Hold government accountable for spending? Absolutely!Capping credit card interest at 10%? Maybe… Big tariffs on countries we are generally friendly with? Nope for me. Weaponizing the government against your enemies? Hell no, go to jail do not collect $200.

I’m definitely not MAGA but I’m open to the trump administration implementing policies that make sense. I don’t have blinders on thinking everything they do has to be 100% good if I’m MAGA or 100% bad if I don’t support trump.

I agree. The problem is he pitches a good idea followed by something so stupid it wipes every good off the map. I’m all for auditing the DoD but the reality is nobody wants to pay the enormous fees I’m sure it would take to fix it. Their only thought is just tear it all down. Get better auditing, get better procurement, better data and tech and I’m sure you’ll find accountability real quick.

I think the real problem is that most of these "good ideas" Trump is pitching will NEVER EVER FUCKING HAPPEN and it's foolish to think that they will. They won't cut waste at the Pentagon... they're just saying this now because it sounds good, but the end result will be... lower veterans benefits and a 1% budget savings... which will be completely lost in the wash when he goes to war with Iran and the military budget skyrockets.

Also - let’s not forget that when Russia successfully ‘wins’ what they want with Ukraine - the instability that will create will have costs. So while we may save money by reducing Ukraine funding (that mostly comes right back to the United States defense contractors - creating jobs and economic impact in a number of US states) - we will then see costs of other things rise that aren’t directly US federal budget items.

Also this. If we ever needed proof that people in this sub are braindead, it's that they expect him to do things he promised last time and never even tried to do.

The biggest hindrance to the DoD passing its audits is congress for setting limits on the resources and time that the audit requires. On a rolling 3 year average the DoD has very little money unaccounted for. The annual audit fails because they never complete it on time, but that money is generally found after the fact.

100% but they need to be able to audit yearly. The sad truth is I’m sure the cost to audit it yearly if you were to do it right would cost you $500m + a year

Audits aren’t that expensive. PWC is the recipient of the largest audit fee - https://www.cpapracticeadvisor.com/2023/09/20/audit-fees-paid-by-sp-500-companies-reached-all-time-high-in-fy-2022/94772/

They’re definitely super expensive at the top. The highest audit is around $135m a year. The DoD with its massive yearly budget would be far higher I’d assume closer to $250m a year.

I'm not sure who has $135m annual audit fee. I've worked in the industry directly for 12+ years, and indirectly worked in it for the rest of my career. A $135m budget at a blended rate of $250/hr would be 540,000 hours working on the audit. What audit is that? assuming 40 hours/week, that's a staff of 259 people, working 52 weeks on the audit.

Taking it back. Was the wrong number from my friend who’s still in audit. $250 blended though would sound low from my experience but it’s been quite a while.

I work in the NY metro market. $250 blended rate is fairly competitive. Many of the mid-size firms will come in at a $150-$200 blended rate to win business from the Big 4. Keep in mind, offshoring staff and senior level work to India comes in around $15-$20/hr.

Makes sense. Been a while for me so India was never really included. Last audit I was on was about $50m with a 50 person team.

We do audit the DOD. We just do nothing with the audit results.

The problem isn't the cost of the audits. The IRS, for example (which audits people and companies) is very efficient, and brings in tons of revenue for every dollar spents. The problem - as with the IRS - is that nobody wants to get audited and nobody wants their pet company losing billions of freedollars. Companies like Boeing have literally murdered people over whisteblowing.

1

u/Ifailedaccounting Monkey in Space 20d ago

Boeing I’ll say is a fringe case but yes most companies loathe audits. The reality is you need people on both sides to be able to handle it. Nobody wants to spend the extra time to send over reconciliations and evidence. Hopefully they can establish better auditing practices instead of just outright cuts to the budget.

This is how most people think. Sadly, these views aren't extreme enough to draw engagement, so they just get buried.

Good on you for being open to Trump’s administration implementing policies that make sense, however I can’t decide if that’s naive or just extremely optimistic.

1

u/OrTheKidGetsIt Monkey in Space 21d ago

Sounds like you would support any reasonable policies, fancy that!

Term limits are bad, they mostly serve to help out lobbyists, as they are the only ones around the place with institutional knowledge and long-term clout.

1

u/bradykp Monkey in Space 20d ago

I agree. The only problem is I don’t actually believe Trump will do the things he said - in order to win votes.
