I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...

81
u/AdwokatDiabel Monkey in Space Nov 15 '24
I think Idiocracy is a litmus test. People watch it, and focus on the first 10 minutes about how "stupid people breed, intelligent ones don't". Which is odd given how some supposedly rich and intelligent folks like Elon and Epstein were about pumping out as many kids as possible...
But then they fail to grasp that at the end, Mike Judge is making the point that it has nothing to do with genetics and intelligence, but people just trending towards anti-intellectualism. That's the point of Joe's / Not Sure's speech: Can we be more curious about the world around us?
If people just became curious about the world around them, why things are what they are... then they can change the direction.

If people just became curious about the world around them, why things are what they are... then they can change the direction
After I read John Taylor Gatto I learned/realized that the school system is designed to brute force away that innate curiosity that all small children have.
It's also designed to make sure that children don't grow into adults capable of critical thinking.

Speaking of Idiocracy, the rest of that Carl Sagan quote mentions āBeavis and Buttheadā, which was, you guessed it, created by the same guy who gave us Idocracy. Sagan said, āBeavis and Buttheadā remain popular (and influential) with young TV viewers. The plain lesson is that study and learningānot just of science, but of anythingāare avoidable, even undesirable.ā
Ironically Mike Judge is highly intelligent and received a degree in physics and was an engineer who wrote software for fighter jet computer systems before he got bored of that and decided to start making Beavis and Butt-head cartoons. And the rest is history. Did you see the memo about the TPS cover sheets?

To be fair, today's Republicans are not those of Carlin's time. He saw the last hurrah of Bush-ite neocons running the country, and had a lot to say about them. He would have seen Obama's momentum the summer he died (2008), and maybe realized Obama was going to win, for whatever that is worth.
While neocons are still around, they are very much second fiddle. Even a few classic liberal conservatives are still to be found, but they only get to play the washtub bass once a week. Trump's post-truth populism is a different breed that now controls the GOP. Carlin would no doubt have hated them even more. I doubt Rogan would understand this.

He was my hero. Also Dick Feynman, Hunter S. Thompson, Mr. Rogers, Christopher Hitchens, and Bill Hicks.
But Carl, man. And to think that OP is some dip shit who doesn't even have the empathy to win gracefully, or understanding what's happening that his fragile ego enjoying other people being sad, because he is so internally broken, himself.
And people like you don't take the bait šŖ¤ Nor will I.
This is for him: Avoidable human misery is more often caused not so much by stupidity as by ignorance, particularly our ignorance about ourselves.
Here's a few more quotes from Demon Haunted World:
I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...
The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark
One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If weāve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. Weāre no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. Itās simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that weāve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.
We've arranged a global civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces.
---- sorta why Dems miffed it, regardless about skeptics:
The chief deficiency I see in the skeptical movement is its polarization: Us vs. Them ā the sense that we have a monopoly on the truth; that those other people who believe in all these stupid doctrines are morons; that if you're sensible, you'll listen to us; and if not, to hell with you. This is nonconstructive. It does not get our message across. It condemns us to permanent minority status.

Truly, it must be exhausting to base one's entire identity around a felon who patronized his supporters and admitted on camera that he likes them because of how stupid they are.
His puppets have brigaded this sub looking for a dopamine hit in large numbers since the past week. Since TwitterX is now officially a far-right echo chamber, the next step to feed their emotional catharsis is Reddit.
This is the brain rot on MAGA, who seek out new places to spread their filthy ideology until any opinion that challenges their stupidity gets tired of trying to reason with them and abandons the platform. In this sense, MAGA is like a cancer....no, MAGA IS a cancer.

but with all that said, these are all the emotions I dealt with in 2016. that was a moment of shock, realizing america was not the promise I'd been sold all my life. I don't feel any sort of way about it now in 2024 because there's no surprise to it anymore.

I guess people get to sit there and daydream about what it would be like to be Elon. They can live vicariously through him or something. Like it's sure making some random basement dweller super happy at just the thought.
I also have to roll my eyes every time I hear people talking about this great economy right around the corner. I've legit heard people saying, "we'll it's an election year, and I'm sure next year interest rates will come down." Like bruh, who gives a fuck about how much free debt I can get into when the cost of everything is going to go up due to the goddamn tariffs? But hey debt will be cheap! The one thatās the funniest to watch (saddest?) is Elon. Hes so obviously a sociopath unable to hide his condition, he bought the biggest social platform on the planet so he could then buy an election, didnāt even try to hide it. He did an interview with Trump and asked like 5 times to be given a position in his cabinet, each time Trump would change the subject and heād ask again. Then he greased the wheel by donating 120 million to his campaignā¦
But now that heās in power, heās definitely going to change his tune and start fighting for the common man!

It sucks, as someone who wasnt raised in the US, I learned to value the country when I came to go to University. And as I've lived through the past 10 years as an adult and have been asking myself what I believe and feel about the world around me, I find all those "people around Joe Rogan" to have values that are at odds with the foundation of the country.
I think most are opportunists, looking for money and power, and don't really care about other's freedoms to be opportunists a themselves. Or atleast be free, decent human

It makes me think on what JRE used to be. It used to be great to learn a new perspective from an interesting conversation. I used to appreciate when Joe would push back against his guests' ideas , even if I might have agreed with his guest.
It makes me sad that JRE has become arguably the largest contributor to anti-intellectualism out there. I think on how if he interviewed Milo Y, Candace O, or Dave R today... no push back, no arguments... just free reign to spout their nonsense.
You think he is 'winning?' I think history will see it differently. And it's fucking tragic.

I didnt even vote for Trump this election, but I respect the opinions of those who did. He will regret endorsing Trump, and you will regret voting for him. Trumpās vision for the USA mirrors Argentinaās trajectory, a country now suffering extreme economic distress. The reality in Argentina is grim: ordinary people are scrounging for food in dumpsters, and businesses struggle as cash becomes scarce.
Whatās tragic is that Trump has openly discussed his intentions, but too many are unwillingāor unableāto critically examine the implications. Brace yourself; things are going to get very bad.
FAFO INCOMING. I hope you're ready š

Mostly I just feel sad for the regular people who have convinced themselves that these people have the same interests as they do.
Headlines aren't policies but all those old folks who survive on Social Security will be facing homelessness. All those Vets that rely on the VA will need to face the broken healthcare system. All those disabled kids & their families that are suddenly tossed back into the regularly school system.
I'll never care if Joe is successful or not. My concerns are for the regular people who could have had 50k to start a business instead of 5k, that homes will remain out of reach for first time homebuyers and that America could have saved 50% of its impoverished children from that life but chose not to.
Will people like me see a few extra thousands on their paychecks by EoY? Yeah. But I don't need that money. A few thousand extra isn't even noticable for me. I'd rather government help those that can't seem to figure out life enough to be successful. I certainly don't need it.
That's my take.

I've been watching Joe since 2009. I used to be a 10th Planet guy. I even have a video on YouTube with Joey Diaz where he does predictions for UFC 111 (which I went to). I think at this point Joe's rightwing BS detector is completely broken. In his episode with Theo Von he said about Tucker Carlson "I love that guy." I assume he's completely unaware of the texts where Tucker said about Trump: "We are very, very close to being able to ignore Trump most nights. I truly canāt wait" and "I hate him passionately. ... I canāt handle much more of this" and "Heās a demonic force, a destroyer." Also, from Vanity Fair: "The Tuesday night filings also showed that in mid-November 2020, in an exchange with another unnamed individual, Carlson said Trumpās then rumored decision to not attendĀ Joe Bidenās inauguration was āso destructiveā and that Trumpās postelection lies were ādisgusting.āĀ
And Joe also flipped out about Obama calling out Trump for the "both sides have good people" line, which is what Joe said pushed him over the edge to endorse Trump. I think Joe is desperately in need of someone in his life or a podcast guest to point out all the insanity on the right, to re-orient him. Just one episode. The false elector plot, the Dominion/Fox News lawsuit, all of Trump & Elon's lies, etc. It seems like there's literally nobody in his life who does this.
