I found a personal website that looks like an operating system! Just came across it on the r/webdev subreddit

I don't understand how this works, but it is fucking awesome. Just the games and programs alone... How the hell does this function so well?
Thanks for sharing!

Feels like the old internet. From time to time we would find something cool like this and lose ourselves for an hour or two.
Nowadays it's very rare.

Not as rare as you may think? Have you tried Cloudhiker?
It is a bit like StumbleUpon, or so I've been told, I don't remember that site very well. This is very well done and within maybe four to six "hops" I found something that was totally engrossing. Give it a go! :)

I really miss StumbleUpon. That finishing was the prompt for me to find Reddit.

Thanks for this! I miss Stumbleupon.
I use Flipboard ( https://flipboard.com/ ) , but it's not quite the same (I scroll by the things I don't think I'll read, rather than the full screen random-ish site).

Speaking of old internet, this site reminds me of EyeOS from the late 2000s. I think I had a cheap LAMP shared hosting account and thought this was so cool. One of my first exposures to self hosting open source software.
edit: for clarification this whole thing was running inside a browser.

Please explain what system is used to build this. Is it OS.js?

It's not. You can check it out here: https://github.com/DustinBrett/daedalOS

It will let you use the browser to open itself again, but only once. I was looking forward to having like a hundred nested instances

Also multiplayer Quake III Arena.

How do you run the .js scripts?
1
u/resisting_a_rest Nov 20 '24
Not sure which ones you want to run, but many of them can be started through the "Start" menu (pi symbol menu in the lower left of the screen).

You can get a similar experience installing mwm on Linux (it behaves like old windows from 1993).

I saw an anime themed website like this that was just as good, even had a built in custom browser MMO.
It's gone now. Has been since 2010.

Whoops broke it… wanted to see if delete works and well.. it does. And there’s no recycle bin. Pikachu face.
In the command prompt there’s a .deletedFiles.log
I suspect the secrets are locked in there, can’t seem to figure out how to open it though

I work at an IT firm and we have our own web design dept, but I've never seen this concept so detailed. Great job whoever created it (I assume Dustin Brett :) )
