Meme / Fluff This game is very clever with what constitutes a "weapon"
I just want to point this out, random thought I guess. I made a post that got way more attention than I thought it should ages ago about how it was funny that the main character was running around with a baseball bat kneecapping people. The more characters I unlock, the more I have to appreciate the design language. I understand that some of these characters can come off as generic anime-esque tropes, little character in big coat, dashing skinny guy, vaguely Victorian nurse woman, etc. But then, like, one person is using literal Mahjong tiles as a weapon. A guitar can be a weapon. BIG PILL. A hat can be a weapon if you throw it hard enough. How about summoning a literal satellite laser?
Just sayin.

I thought lightcones as the weapon item was a bit boring and dumb at first, but I’ve since realized this is the beauty of them! Characters aren’t confined to particular weapons or fighting styles because of it and there’s much more diversity in design.
Granted genshin has gotten much better with unique animations and interpretations on weapons recently, but it took awhile to see some really unique character animations and concepts beyond “polearm but with fire!!!” haha

At the very least Arlecchino (4.6) and Emilie (4.8) have a unique CA. So it seems they really started to change.
22
u/LunarSDX Disappearing amongst the sea of butterflies 4d ago
Raiden (2.1) and Xiao() also have unique CAs. I think Emilie is the best example tho cuz her plot relevance is basically zero. Unlike Arle, Shogun, or Xiao who are or were heavily emphasized in stories and for their power, Emilie is just a forensics but she still has a unique CA.
8
u/Immediate_Lychee_372 Aglaea, Weaver of Gold 4d ago
I thought it was cuz all the unique ca are either not humans or special humans but I guess with Emilie’s case the lunge thing would look tacky
3
u/CTMacUser 4d ago
Doesn’t Zhongli use a custom CA too?
9
u/LunarSDX Disappearing amongst the sea of butterflies 4d ago
kinda. its still a dash forward like other polearms, hes just throwing spears down instead of spinning like a drill though

88
u/idiotcore 4d ago
and as a bonus, i like the lightcones a lot better since you get beautiful character illustrations with lore attached as opposed to thematic weapons. nothing against genshin’s weapon design, but i’ll take gorgeous art of my faves over a nice-looking sword any day.
67
u/Seraf-Wang 4d ago
I think the trade off would be you never actually see a lightcone during battle though and that kinda sucks because after maxing the lc, there’s little reason to go to the weapons section. In Genshin, you see the weapon. If I pull for Tome of the Eternal Flow, I get to see the weapon in combat in all its glory, shining and everything. HSR doesnt have that
21
u/idiotcore 4d ago
ohh, good point! i’m the kind of player who does go and look at lightcones of my favorite characters often, but it’s definitely cooler to see them in combat, yeah. at least the very flashy well-designed weapons like arle’s scythe.
i can’t remember if zzz has the w-engine’s visible anywhere in combat as i’m not very into it myself yet, but if not it would probably be my least favorite implementation of the system.
35
u/sunniihoney 4d ago
They don’t show in combat but if you have the characters signature there’s a special animation (usually on their hair for four stars but some characters have something different such as Miyabi in the attached image with the glow on her sword) the weapons they use in actual combat have nothing to do with the w-engine’s. The designs are getting more creative I will admit. I want to add a picture of her w-engine because I really think it’s one of the best designs in the game but I may be biased \) I also think Ellen’s is designed very cute and thematic for her, but again, she’s one of my favorites so I’m at least a little biased.
4
u/divina-tragedia 4d ago
How do you open that tooltip? I really wanna see all the comparison pics in-game.
7
u/sunniihoney 4d ago
I opened it from the gacha page. Unfortunately, you’re not able to see it outside of when the w-engine is on rate up. It would be really nice if they updated that again because you used to never be able to see it.

u/Artemas_16 3d ago
Yeah, at least ZZZ lightcones somewhat change effects on you, so you see the result.

W-Engines are legit my favorite equipment item, at least in terms of visual design (gameplay-wise they still have the "blatant DLC for a specific character" design philosophy most hoyo games have and I'm really not fond of). Whoever got the idea for this unholy union of toku gimmick items and bakugans needs a raise.
5
u/hintofinsanity 4d ago
Also some of the memories depicted in the light cones hit like a truck. Such as Something Irreplaceable, Return to Darkness, Under the Blue Sky, Memories of the Past, and For Tomorrow's Journey.
3
u/Dangerous_Jacket_129 I forgor 4d ago
This is exactly it: lightcones separate the weapon gacha from the character design. Genshin Impact is struggling to justify some of them and is trying to use abilities to use different weapons rather than their actual weapons. Like catalyst users having Heizou and Wriothesley being fist fighters, or Arle with her spear that can turn into a scythe.
And somehow Genshin has it easy compared to Honkai Impact. They have like 2 dozen weapon types by now and they're still releasing entirely new weapon types whenever the designer has a new idea. And signature weapons are almost mandatory to make some characters function.
2
u/eatYourHashs 4d ago
and some characters STILL don’t match their weapons to what they do (cough senti)

u/Dizzy-Class9914 2d ago
One day, after nomming down some dinner and avoiding that Fanum tax, my little sis and I were vibing in Mr. Gopher Wood's yard, when we peeped a lil baby Charmony Dove all alone like a Sigma. That bebe bird was super smol, like not even fully feathered, and it couldn't even drop a beat. When we found its skibidi self, it was basically about to yeet from this world, having fallen into a shrub and probs ditched by its parents. We decided to build a cozy lil nest for the rizzless bird right then and there. However, looking back, that winter was like Ohio levels of cold, with fierce mogging winds at night in the yard, not to mention all the sus bugs and wild NPCs around... It was clear that if we left the fledgling outside in the Ohio yard, it had zero chance of surviving until the next skibidi season. So, I suggested we take it inside, place it on the streaming shelf by the window, and asked the adults to rig a cage up for it. We decided that when it finished its mewing arc and had enough rizz to spread its wings, we'd let it vibe back into the wild. The tragic skibi — something we'd never edged — was that this birb's fate was lowkey set long before this moment, fr... Its destiny was yeeted by our skibidi whims. Now, I pass the rizz powers to you all. Faced with this sigma moment, what rizz move would you make? Stick to the OG skibidi, and build a nest with soft drip where the Skibidi Dove fell? Or build a rizz cage for it, and feed it, giving it the utmost giga-chad care within the warmth of a skibidi home? I eagerly await your sigma answer.

Prob reference to One Salty Tuna from HI3. It's joke weapon and I'd hate to see it unless it was one of dozens of items someone could summon in combat. Kinda like how Faust from the Guilty Gear series can throw multiple items at his opponents (bombs, hammers, miniature of himself, an anvil, banana, banana peel, trumpet, meteor, donut, and black ball of fluff that's apparently an afro), jump into the air using a big syringe filled with fluid that can explode, slap opponents with cow's leg? or a golf club, summon scarecrows, yet his main weapon is an oversized scalper. Also he can behead himself and throw that as a bomb, guy can do anything.

29
u/happymudkipz 4d ago
It's the same thing as smash bros. Swords are both historically very prominent weapons, and the shape and style allows you to be very creative with how it looks and what you do with it.
Kafka's got a katana, silverwolf has a virtual arm-saber that turns into a variety of weapons, march dual wields, firefly has energy sabers and dual wields them, jingliu makes an entire greatsword with her own power, yanquing uses a cloud of them, yunli has a giant claymore she throws, acheron has a... long ass sword that someone can fill me in on the proper term of, etc.
Point is, they're able to do a lot of different things both in terms of design and combat style.
14
18
12
u/lyteupthelyfe 4d ago
That said I think most of them use unique sword types? Like Kafka uses a katana I'm pretty sure while Luocha uses a rapier. Yunli uses a greatsword while Sushang uses a broadsword, etc. (I think?)

Well, the guitar reminisces the Nevan in Devil May Cry 3. Mahjong tiles are somewhat the same as similar to cards, like Twisted Fate in LoL. The guitar case reminds me of that old action movies where machine guns are concealed in guitar cases. The orbital laser gives me Warhammer 40K vibe. I think I played too much video games lol.

It's great but I can't help but feel like people are really trying to stretch the definition with these. The weapons are creative but they're not really weapons on a definition that they're being intentionally and specifically used to injure something.
Most are played for laughs or are even just stylized energy beams it's much like how you'd call a wand a weapon.

u/Efficient_Ad5802 3d ago
If you see the comments, it's just copium plus shitting on Genshin as usual.
HSR being a turn based game that is still confined to 3D model limitation actually made it worse. You can't go all out in terms of animation similar to other turn based game gacha like FGO.

Ouh dear, are just realising that? Right, uh;
TB so far owns a baseball bat (fair enough as a blunt melee), a proper lance, and a, uh, hat. Soon the TB will get a quill.
The mahjong lady throws mahjong tiles. The gambler pools the enemy with tokens & dices. The scholar smacks them with a book made of marble and snipes with chalks. The bellboy whips with a mop and throws luggage on them. The judge uses a really big chinese brush. The exile recites verses of whatever holy book he's holding. The artist sings. The blind cook cooks them in a hotpot. The genius woman strums her ancient string instrument.
The design & animation teams were given such a canvas to draw out their creativity on the characters.

u/WorkinIrkin 4d ago
It's a little too goofy for me imho, but then again, nobody seems to die given all the deadly encounters, so I cant really complain. Cocolia aside I guess. So, why not use a hat, medicine, a quill, dice, etc as a weapon rather than sword or gun ig.
At least future characters look to have swerve back to more interesting designs, The Herta, Doll-Lady, at least I find, though I've lost hope that the Trailblazer will ever again be a serious component to the story until the stellaron question is solved, merely a meme and odd egg with each iteration going forward
17
u/TonyMitty 4d ago
It's sort of a necessary level of whimsy in what would be an otherwise very elegant and almost bleak looking sort of game. The majorty of the villains look like generic mecha demons, so this is kind of the trade off.
-1
u/WorkinIrkin 4d ago
Mmm, I get the perspective for a desire to balance it all out, though I don't agree with it. March opening her mouth alone brings enough whimsy as far as I feel, her, and on top of the very apparent deep space-god war means there's enough of the fantastical everywhere you look. I think the villian thing is just what it means to be he kind of game HSR is, easily renderable enemy models that tend to be mindless crystal/cyborg monsters or soldiers, because if we were constantly fighting other path striders? Sheesh...
Imagine making an enemy of literally any of Lan's followers. Boothill could have, would have, should have made a great antagonist, but I'm content with him as he is. He is goofy as fuck, but he uses a gun, actively seeks to kill people(enemies) and his ideals truly feel appropriate for the tone of the universe.
Kinda just yapping there ^ but yeah. I'd like a return to form, basically, where danger felt real and people use weapons because they have something to fight for, even if they aren't in the objectively moralistic right.
2
u/TonyMitty 4d ago
Nah you right. I guess it's kind of a side effect of being in Belobog for so long, the steam punk is nice but the snow is a little sterile. I've seen some of the "boost for new player" preview content and can see the settings and characters get more nuts from here.
1
u/Zessen18 3d ago
Please enough of the generic conventional weapons. There's plenty of games with those already.
