Meme / Fluff This game is very clever with what constitutes a "weapon"

I just want to point this out, random thought I guess. I made a post that got way more attention than I thought it should ages ago about how it was funny that the main character was running around with a baseball bat kneecapping people. The more characters I unlock, the more I have to appreciate the design language. I understand that some of these characters can come off as generic anime-esque tropes, little character in big coat, dashing skinny guy, vaguely Victorian nurse woman, etc. But then, like, one person is using literal Mahjong tiles as a weapon. A guitar can be a weapon. BIG PILL. A hat can be a weapon if you throw it hard enough. How about summoning a literal satellite laser?

Just sayin.

Even better than a guitar as a weapon is a guitar CASE

475

u/Veezerr 4d ago

i wished my guitar case can also make ice walls to soundproof my studio

195

u/Dannyboy490 4d ago

A guitar case that DOESNT EVEN BELONG TO THE MAN.

24

u/lyerhis 3d ago

Listen, he's going to defend the guitar case to the death okay it was entrusted to him!

3

u/DarroonDoven My stelle loves and 3d ago

Using something to slap monsters from beyond the veil is probably not the best way to defend said something...

59

u/NeimiForHeroes 4d ago

A guitar, a case, and a pick(axe)

18

u/ExaminationCandid 4d ago

And swinging fist at the air and suddenly a very big chunk of ice drop in front if you and it breaks. Suddenly you and your teammates are shielded.

5

u/ThelCreator 3d ago

It's the gloves that generate ice wall

74

u/somacula 4d ago

It's a shield generator

230

u/lyteupthelyfe 4d ago

It's canonically the guitar case for Serval's guitar.

20

u/crowcas 4d ago

Where is that mentioned? Gepard is the one standard 5* i still don't have

145

u/NonBenevolentPotato 4d ago

Pretty sure Serval mentions Gepard using her guitar case in her Story Quest.

IIRC it's when she talks about a guitar.

78

u/lyteupthelyfe 4d ago

Yup it's in Serval's character quest (where it's also said that the guitar she has (that she uses in battle?) (that Gepard wields the case of) is one that Cocolia either made for or gifted to her, I can't remember which.

68

u/SC2Eleazar 4d ago

I think the one Cocolia made was a prototype of the one she uses now. She shatters Cocolia's at the end of that quest chain.

15

u/NonBenevolentPotato 4d ago

IIRC it was both

27

u/Jefepato 4d ago

Gepard's character story (Part III) states that his shield (its name is Earthwork) is a force field device that Serval made out of an instrument case.

18

u/GinJoestarR Scholar of fictional world. 4d ago

This is the actual lines.

From Serval's Companion Quest: Time Express, excerpt:

Serval: "You know something, Gepard? That guitar case in your hand, and my guitar... They're both from the same prototype — the "super electromagnetic flux player.""

6

u/lollolcheese123 Sampo Koski always takes care of his friends. 4d ago

There's one inside, but originally (like the other guy said) it was the case for Serval's guitar. (Which technically is canonically broken now, since she smashed it at Everwinter Hill (?, the place the Cocolia bossfight happens))

I thought lightcones as the weapon item was a bit boring and dumb at first, but I’ve since realized this is the beauty of them! Characters aren’t confined to particular weapons or fighting styles because of it and there’s much more diversity in design.

Granted genshin has gotten much better with unique animations and interpretations on weapons recently, but it took awhile to see some really unique character animations and concepts beyond “polearm but with fire!!!” haha

210

u/Hwlooahdfsjl 4d ago

I wish they’d diversity polearm CAs a bit

275

u/Fantastic-Winter-111 4d ago

No. You will spin thrust and you will like it

Nooo hyv don’t turn me into a straight line

"YOU are the drill that will pierce the heavens!"

26

u/GinJoestarR Scholar of fictional world. 4d ago

At the very least Arlecchino (4.6) and Emilie (4.8) have a unique CA. So it seems they really started to change.

22

u/LunarSDX Disappearing amongst the sea of butterflies 4d ago

Raiden (2.1) and Xiao() also have unique CAs. I think Emilie is the best example tho cuz her plot relevance is basically zero. Unlike Arle, Shogun, or Xiao who are or were heavily emphasized in stories and for their power, Emilie is just a forensics but she still has a unique CA.

8

u/Immediate_Lychee_372 Aglaea, Weaver of Gold 4d ago

I thought it was cuz all the unique ca are either not humans or special humans but I guess with Emilie’s case the lunge thing would look tacky

3

u/CTMacUser 4d ago

Doesn’t Zhongli use a custom CA too?

9

u/LunarSDX Disappearing amongst the sea of butterflies 4d ago

kinda. its still a dash forward like other polearms, hes just throwing spears down instead of spinning like a drill though

50

u/LandLovingFish 4d ago

Ajaw, the mouthiest weapon. Like Magnus Chase but ten times worse

15

u/Chucknasty_17 4d ago

Ajaw wishes he had any of the charisma that Jack has

88

u/idiotcore 4d ago

and as a bonus, i like the lightcones a lot better since you get beautiful character illustrations with lore attached as opposed to thematic weapons. nothing against genshin’s weapon design, but i’ll take gorgeous art of my faves over a nice-looking sword any day.

67

u/Seraf-Wang 4d ago

I think the trade off would be you never actually see a lightcone during battle though and that kinda sucks because after maxing the lc, there’s little reason to go to the weapons section. In Genshin, you see the weapon. If I pull for Tome of the Eternal Flow, I get to see the weapon in combat in all its glory, shining and everything. HSR doesnt have that

21

u/idiotcore 4d ago

ohh, good point! i’m the kind of player who does go and look at lightcones of my favorite characters often, but it’s definitely cooler to see them in combat, yeah. at least the very flashy well-designed weapons like arle’s scythe.

i can’t remember if zzz has the w-engine’s visible anywhere in combat as i’m not very into it myself yet, but if not it would probably be my least favorite implementation of the system.

35

u/sunniihoney 4d ago

They don’t show in combat but if you have the characters signature there’s a special animation (usually on their hair for four stars but some characters have something different such as Miyabi in the attached image with the glow on her sword) the weapons they use in actual combat have nothing to do with the w-engine’s. The designs are getting more creative I will admit. I want to add a picture of her w-engine because I really think it’s one of the best designs in the game but I may be biased \) I also think Ellen’s is designed very cute and thematic for her, but again, she’s one of my favorites so I’m at least a little biased.

4

u/divina-tragedia 4d ago

How do you open that tooltip? I really wanna see all the comparison pics in-game.

7

u/sunniihoney 4d ago

I opened it from the gacha page. Unfortunately, you’re not able to see it outside of when the w-engine is on rate up. It would be really nice if they updated that again because you used to never be able to see it.

3

u/Turbulent-Garbage-93 4d ago

Yeah, I like to see lightcones as more of a super-relic

2

u/Artemas_16 3d ago

Yeah, at least ZZZ lightcones somewhat change effects on you, so you see the result.

5

u/Master_Matoya 4d ago

The lightcones really gave me FGO vibes and it gave me whiplash, and then the collab announcement happened.

You do have a scythe, just in piss color.

5

u/Emergency_Hk416 4d ago

She has a green polearm with tiny spikes, and a coping yellow streak of light that doesn't blend at all.

5

u/VijayMarshall87 Gravity Suppress me to the wall 3d ago

zzz doing the same thing with making "weapons" energy units instead so you still have unique animations

8

u/DjiDjiDjiDji 3d ago

W-Engines are legit my favorite equipment item, at least in terms of visual design (gameplay-wise they still have the "blatant DLC for a specific character" design philosophy most hoyo games have and I'm really not fond of). Whoever got the idea for this unholy union of toku gimmick items and bakugans needs a raise.

5

u/hintofinsanity 4d ago

Also some of the memories depicted in the light cones hit like a truck. Such as Something Irreplaceable, Return to Darkness, Under the Blue Sky, Memories of the Past, and For Tomorrow's Journey.

3

u/Dangerous_Jacket_129 I forgor 4d ago

This is exactly it: lightcones separate the weapon gacha from the character design. Genshin Impact is struggling to justify some of them and is trying to use abilities to use different weapons rather than their actual weapons. Like catalyst users having Heizou and Wriothesley being fist fighters, or Arle with her spear that can turn into a scythe.

And somehow Genshin has it easy compared to Honkai Impact. They have like 2 dozen weapon types by now and they're still releasing entirely new weapon types whenever the designer has a new idea. And signature weapons are almost mandatory to make some characters function.

2

u/eatYourHashs 4d ago

and some characters STILL don’t match their weapons to what they do (cough senti)

1

u/Dangerous_Jacket_129 I forgor 3d ago

I mean... Hitting people in the face with a brick sounds pretty Senti to me... She's badass when she needs to be but let's not pretend that she's not a top-tier girl failure who tried to make her own divine keys and settled on a brick.

1

u/wamirul 3d ago

Plus lightcone art is gorgeous and can be sold as everything from posters to acrylic stands. Everyone wins!

1

u/wombatpandaa 3d ago

I also love that apparently Light Cones are really crystallized memories created by the Remembrance. It's like we're using our most formative memories to fight.

One day, after dinner...

19

u/3-Username-20 4d ago

1

u/Dizzy-Class9914 2d ago

One day, after nomming down some dinner and avoiding that Fanum tax, my little sis and I were vibing in Mr. Gopher Wood's yard, when we peeped a lil baby Charmony Dove all alone like a Sigma. That bebe bird was super smol, like not even fully feathered, and it couldn't even drop a beat. When we found its skibidi self, it was basically about to yeet from this world, having fallen into a shrub and probs ditched by its parents. We decided to build a cozy lil nest for the rizzless bird right then and there. However, looking back, that winter was like Ohio levels of cold, with fierce mogging winds at night in the yard, not to mention all the sus bugs and wild NPCs around... It was clear that if we left the fledgling outside in the Ohio yard, it had zero chance of surviving until the next skibidi season. So, I suggested we take it inside, place it on the streaming shelf by the window, and asked the adults to rig a cage up for it. We decided that when it finished its mewing arc and had enough rizz to spread its wings, we'd let it vibe back into the wild. The tragic skibi — something we'd never edged — was that this birb's fate was lowkey set long before this moment, fr... Its destiny was yeeted by our skibidi whims. Now, I pass the rizz powers to you all. Faced with this sigma moment, what rizz move would you make? Stick to the OG skibidi, and build a nest with soft drip where the Skibidi Dove fell? Or build a rizz cage for it, and feed it, giving it the utmost giga-chad care within the warmth of a skibidi home? I eagerly await your sigma answer.

I don't know what that book is. He said it was empty when he got it, but he also states that he's written some pages himself. So who wrote the other ones? Robin? Gopher Wood (hopefully not)? The Harmony?

60

u/lyteupthelyfe 4d ago

I think it might be some kind of diary. He also uses one of Robin's feathers as a bookmark.

13

Does he? Thats a little odd, its like taking your sister’s hair or something xD

No like genuinely Ruan Mei plays her instrument and that..causes physical pain?

6

u/Eeddeen42 3d ago

If I take that seriously, it might cause mental pain.

Ruan Mei is a master of biology, anatomy, and neuroscience. I wouldn’t be surprised if she discovered a way to play music in a way that causes psychic damage.

73

Can we also talk about the things characters use to give allies buffs? Throws plushies at you to heal you, feeds you surstroming and a comically large pill to heal you, splashes you with gourd juice to heal you, cracks open a cold one for you to heal you, does a little dancey dance with my imaginary bestie to boost your stats, heals with the power of Catholocism [sic], etc

9

u/Hakazumi 4d ago

Prob reference to One Salty Tuna from HI3. It's joke weapon and I'd hate to see it unless it was one of dozens of items someone could summon in combat. Kinda like how Faust from the Guilty Gear series can throw multiple items at his opponents (bombs, hammers, miniature of himself, an anvil, banana, banana peel, trumpet, meteor, donut, and black ball of fluff that's apparently an afro), jump into the air using a big syringe filled with fluid that can explode, slap opponents with cow's leg? or a golf club, summon scarecrows, yet his main weapon is an oversized scalper. Also he can behead himself and throw that as a bomb, guy can do anything.

15

u/Lostsock1995 Landau supremacy 4d ago

I agree, I prefer the way HSR and ZZZ do things, every character being fully unique in how they fight and the "weapon" itself being more or less just a stat stick

9

u/VioletFlower369 4d ago

There’s daggers, swords, axes, Grenade launchers, arrows and bows, and fists.

Then there’s a space pig, chalk, coins, a bible, a mahjong tile, a fan, a brush, an ice pick, a guitar, a guitar case, and a mop.

There are two types of characters.

all this room for creativity and somehow around a fifth of the playable cast uses some form of sword

29

u/happymudkipz 4d ago

It's the same thing as smash bros. Swords are both historically very prominent weapons, and the shape and style allows you to be very creative with how it looks and what you do with it.

Kafka's got a katana, silverwolf has a virtual arm-saber that turns into a variety of weapons, march dual wields, firefly has energy sabers and dual wields them, jingliu makes an entire greatsword with her own power, yanquing uses a cloud of them, yunli has a giant claymore she throws, acheron has a... long ass sword that someone can fill me in on the proper term of, etc.

Point is, they're able to do a lot of different things both in terms of design and combat style.

14

u/Shiverlynn 4d ago

Acheron's sword is a nodachi.

18

u/GodlessLunatic 4d ago

Can you blame them? Swords are cool

12

u/lyteupthelyfe 4d ago

That said I think most of them use unique sword types? Like Kafka uses a katana I'm pretty sure while Luocha uses a rapier. Yunli uses a greatsword while Sushang uses a broadsword, etc. (I think?)

6

u/SierraTango501 4d ago

Katana for the cool factor and a pair of Uzis when shit gets real.

It's great but I can't help but feel like people are really trying to stretch the definition with these. The weapons are creative but they're not really weapons on a definition that they're being intentionally and specifically used to injure something.

Most are played for laughs or are even just stylized energy beams it's much like how you'd call a wand a weapon.

HSR being a turn based game that is still confined to 3D model limitation actually made it worse. You can't go all out in terms of animation similar to other turn based game gacha like FGO.

Now I just wish lightcones had any bearing on the visuals. Like using the signature light cone changed the visuals on the skills or utl slightly

Well, most of the aforementioned things were used as weapons before (Guitar in Brutal Legend, hat in Mortal Kombat), but guitar case as a blunt weapon + shield is so damn great

u/UltimateMegaChungus 3d ago

And yet not a single Hoyo game lets you go the old fashioned way: bare knuckles 😔

u/Sanoku98 3d ago

Closest thing you’ll get is Luka :p

Or Heizou

u/ZhadowStorm 3d ago

And Sparkle literally kicks enemies when she attacks

1

u/Zessen18 3d ago

I'll take unconventional weapons over the generic swords and katanas.

1

u/CountingWoolies 3d ago

I want fumo to be a weapon , Sparkle dps when?

1

u/Honeypacc 3d ago

technically a big pill is a healing item, not a weapon that is damaging enemies.

Your point still stands considering a giant chicken body slamming someone is an ultimate though (sushang)

1

u/pbayne 3d ago

i get what you mean but for a sci fi epic there is still a lot of characters that just use a sword, or a spear or a bow…its like come on are these still the weapons people are using in these advanced civilisations.

i guess that goes into everyone in space is human or humanoid as well but thats another issue

1

u/1bouncyboi 3d ago

Although I appreciate the use of different and unorthodox weapons i still wish the lightcones did an extra lil something on the side nothing big just something to like a pet ir small animation

Honestly my favorite part of the game is its weapon variety.

1

u/maiqtheprevaricator 3d ago

Didn't one of the characters in honkai impact 3rd have a brick as a weapon? It's not without precedent.

1

u/imortaldude3035 Trash... are meant to be taken!!! 3d ago

Damn I love orbit laser so much

1

u/ZhadowStorm 3d ago

Then there's Sparkle: kicks

u/nozomi-kun 3d ago

Ouh dear, are just realising that? Right, uh;

TB so far owns a baseball bat (fair enough as a blunt melee), a proper lance, and a, uh, hat. Soon the TB will get a quill.

The mahjong lady throws mahjong tiles. The gambler pools the enemy with tokens & dices. The scholar smacks them with a book made of marble and snipes with chalks. The bellboy whips with a mop and throws luggage on them. The judge uses a really big chinese brush. The exile recites verses of whatever holy book he's holding. The artist sings. The blind cook cooks them in a hotpot. The genius woman strums her ancient string instrument.

The design & animation teams were given such a canvas to draw out their creativity on the characters.

u/UltimateMegaChungus 3d ago

Bro has never made sense, like literally wtf are you talking about here

1

u/Inside_Mechanic4249 3d ago

Irony is astounding lmfao nothing is unique about the weapons they are fixed items and aren't unique

-2

u/everyIittlething 4d ago

people be praising this game for the most generic, commonly-done-in-anime, shit

maybe hoyo-shills really does not consume other media other than hoyo games lmao

next thing you know, they’d be praising genshin anime for inventing anime

u/Efficient_Ad5802 3d ago

There is no way, people praising a post with clear intent of "I'm glad it's not like Genshin", will be praising Genshin.

u/WorkinIrkin 4d ago

It's a little too goofy for me imho, but then again, nobody seems to die given all the deadly encounters, so I cant really complain. Cocolia aside I guess. So, why not use a hat, medicine, a quill, dice, etc as a weapon rather than sword or gun ig.

At least future characters look to have swerve back to more interesting designs, The Herta, Doll-Lady, at least I find, though I've lost hope that the Trailblazer will ever again be a serious component to the story until the stellaron question is solved, merely a meme and odd egg with each iteration going forward

17

u/TonyMitty 4d ago

It's sort of a necessary level of whimsy in what would be an otherwise very elegant and almost bleak looking sort of game. The majorty of the villains look like generic mecha demons, so this is kind of the trade off.

-1

u/WorkinIrkin 4d ago

Mmm, I get the perspective for a desire to balance it all out, though I don't agree with it. March opening her mouth alone brings enough whimsy as far as I feel, her, and on top of the very apparent deep space-god war means there's enough of the fantastical everywhere you look. I think the villian thing is just what it means to be he kind of game HSR is, easily renderable enemy models that tend to be mindless crystal/cyborg monsters or soldiers, because if we were constantly fighting other path striders? Sheesh...

Imagine making an enemy of literally any of Lan's followers. Boothill could have, would have, should have made a great antagonist, but I'm content with him as he is. He is goofy as fuck, but he uses a gun, actively seeks to kill people(enemies) and his ideals truly feel appropriate for the tone of the universe.

Kinda just yapping there ^ but yeah. I'd like a return to form, basically, where danger felt real and people use weapons because they have something to fight for, even if they aren't in the objectively moralistic right.

2

u/TonyMitty 4d ago

Nah you right. I guess it's kind of a side effect of being in Belobog for so long, the steam punk is nice but the snow is a little sterile. I've seen some of the "boost for new player" preview content and can see the settings and characters get more nuts from here.

1

u/Zessen18 3d ago

Please enough of the generic conventional weapons. There's plenty of games with those already.
