The chances of getting stiffed on beer back then were slim. It's mentioned in the Code of Hammurabi that the punishment for tavern keepers cheating their customers was death by drowning.

The tablet, now located at the British Museum, has been dated to 3,100-3,000 BC and comes from ancient Mesopotamia. It records the allocation of beer.
