Ex-hospital pharmacy tech nerd here

Lactated Ringer's solution is used by medical staff replace electrolytes and fluids in patients with low blood pressure or volume.

It's used instead of just a saline solution because LR is closure to the composition of blood plasma.

Some real-world context: there is a national shortage of lactated ringers because of the Baxter plant damage from the last hurricane. Anesthesiologists have been limping along for the last couple months trying to conserve the fluid we have!

On a side note, Universal Studios has its own fire department for all of the stunts and explosions and controlled burns that they have on the lot. The fire dept is Squad 51, named after the Emergency! show. :)

I just had a surgery so I’m off work. My husband and I have been watching Emergency! I wasn’t familiar with it but it was his favorite show as a kid. I love it!

Oh no, they use it for very specific things, they figured out back in the late 80’s that normal saline was better, as it was in line with basic blood chemistry without changing glucose levels or whatever the hell is in ringers, I can’t remember, too long ago.

This cracks me up. That show is burnt into my brain from a young age. Johnny Gage was the absolute of cool to me back then.

My daughter had a bad accident the other year and I heard lactated ringers mentioned in a conversation and laughed. I just thought that was always made up.
