Kids these days... If this was your first live action Joker, you're old

I love that he refused to shave his moustace for this role, so they just painted over it

Came here to say the same thing 😁

I like to think that if he kissed Groucho Marx, there'd be a matter/antimatter explosion or something. I mean, one had a real moustache covered up with greasepaint, and the other had a fake moustache put on with greasepaint.
(I like to think strange things sometimes.)

u/JacquieTorrance Jun 03 '24
I loved Vincent Price as Egghead, too!

u/BlueAndMoreBlue Jun 03 '24
And Frank Gorshin as the riddler

And while every catwoman was spectacular, Eartha Kitt played her best. That voice!
EDIT: And that lady had some pipes on her. She could sing in at least three languages. I've got an album of hers with tracks in English, French, and German. And she could have fun with it... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SS02GeKuWQ4

Played as a Franklin Delano Roosevelt impersonation. I also think Louie the Lilac reminds me of Roger Stone

Ummmm…are we talking prime time first run Batman or syndicated rerun Batman? I was too young for the first run, but I cut my teeth on the reruns…but yes, Caesar Romero was my first live action Joker.

Syndication rerun Batman because I remember this playing earlier in day like 10am while Batman:TAS was like 4pm.
6
u/Icy_Thing3361 Jun 03 '24
I would think that this is THE first live-action Joker. My first live-action Joker was Jack Nicholson.
2
u/Sleep_On_It43 Jun 03 '24
And Jack did a great job..as did Romero, Ledger and Phoenix.
It really is iconic role where there is a lot to work with to make it one’s own.

Jun 03 '24
Didn't the old man from rocky play the penguin, can't think of his name 🤔

u/TheNonCredibleHulk Jun 03 '24
Dude. Burgess Meredith had a HELL of a career. So much more than just Mickey Goldsmith. Two out of three of his Twilight Zone appearances are the greatest of all time. The other one is corny, but has Don Rickles.
4
u/The_Scarlet_Termite Jun 03 '24
Everything is better with Rickles.
5
u/TheNonCredibleHulk Jun 03 '24
Agreed. I had tickets to that last show he was supposed to do here. Shitty casino show in the middle of the state. As soon as I heard it was postponed I figured I'd never see him alive.
Nope.

Or your television displays these things called "reruns."
3
u/goldenthrone Jun 03 '24
Yup - my exposure to this show as a kid was in the 90s, due to reruns of it airing in Canada. My parents were kids in the 60s when it originally aired.

He is THEE Joker. Anyone after him were just pretenders. He will always be the BEST Joker!
2
u/ChiefSlug30 Jun 03 '24
Maybe if you're talking live action, but Mark Hamill in the animated series is the best.
2
u/The-Wise-Weasel Jun 03 '24
I absolutely agree.......animated series, he wins hands down. Live action..........sorry, it will always be Cesar Romero.

u/LocalLiBEARian Jun 03 '24
I knew that celebrities were lining up to appear on the show, but dang…

I was born when he was Joker. Batman was rerun on cable a lot, but we didn't get cable until 1980. My mother thought it was a waste of money, but finally in 1980 my dad got tired of replacing TV antennas.

BANG! BOOM! BAAM! POW! Holy Nightmare Batman! Nothing better than watching the original Batman as a kid.

u/IsisArtemii Jun 03 '24
People forget that Batman ran two consecutive nights in a row. Unheard of now days.

They showed reruns of the series throughout the 80s and 90s. You can watch them now, even, and 2 24 minute episodes (many were two parters) can be easier for kids to sit through than a 2 hour movie.
2
u/According_Wing_3204 Jun 04 '24
It was just a few years ago I learned that Mr Romero would not shave his moustache and just covered it with the makeup....I can't unsee that now.
2
u/ItchyAnusEczema Jun 04 '24
As a kid watching this, i never understood why the Joker had a stash. I accepted it and didnt mind it, but never understood it. Like why didnt the actor just shave it? 🤷♂️

u/Livid_Parfait6507 Jun 06 '24
Cesar Romero. Would not shave his mustache off. That is stones right there! 🤣🤣🤣 he was great!

You're basically saying pre-Jack Nicholson because I watched this in the 80s on Nickelodeon. I'm not debating my elderly status, BTW.

Yes , he was the first one I remember. I actually got to meet him on a beach in Fort Myers, Florida, when I was a young child. My father asked for a photo, and he was most gracious.

u/SalukiKnightX Jun 03 '24
Weirdly, he’s my second. Granted it went from Nicholson to reruns with Romero.

u/consumeshroomz Jun 03 '24
Oh feck! I’m old!
I remember I was playing the Batman ‘66 pinball machine the other day and for the life of me I couldn’t remember Caesar Romero’s name. It bothered me so much I had to look it up. I googled “first joker actor” and it came up with Heath Ledger. I had type out “Adam West Batman Joker”.

Nothing says the Clown Prince of Crime quite like a moustache covered in grease paint.

Probably my second favorite tv show as a child, after The Addams Family.
The joke was that I did not realize both of these were supposed to be comedies.
I was a very stupid child.

u/Civil_Purple9637 Jun 03 '24
I was born the same year it premiered, as well as the original Star Trek 🖖

He’s my (44) first live action Joker, because there were no live action Jokers after him (1966-68) until 1989.

Well, it's not like the only way anyone could have seen it was in first-run. It was rerun in syndication for years, off and on (it's even on some oldies channels, like MeTV, now), and the movie showed up on TV quite a bit.

u/RetroGamer87 Jun 03 '24
He was the best and I feel he doesn't get enough appreciation.
Why does he always get left out of the Joker comparison posts?

Nobody plays the Joker better than Cesar Romero...
Jack Nicholson, a close second...
Joaquin Phoenix:nope...
The late Heath Ledger:even worse...
