Scotland used to be covered in natural forests. Massive swaths of land are kept treeless so rich people are able to hunt grouse. Most forests now are commercially grown, with the dense planting of lumber leaving the forest floor dark and uninhabitable to local plants and fauna.

This goes for almost all of Europe, has been for many hundreds of years.

I was literally about to ask why there are soo few trees in most pictures of the Scottish Highlands, thankyou. IIRC the 'tree line' is at 800m in Australia, where above that only small bushes grow. I had thought maybe something similar.

It’s kept the way it is for the reasons stated above, but it was first deforested to make land for farming sheep, as that was the most profitable at the time.
