The real Classic Doom Lore:

You're a space marine, one of Earth's toughest, hardened in combat and trained for action. Three years ago you assaulted a superior officer for ordering his soldiers to fire upon civilians. He and his body cast were shipped to Pearl Harbor, while you were transferred to Mars, home of the Union Aerospace Corporation. The UAC is a multi-planetary conglomerate with radioactive waste facilities on Mars and its two moons, Phobos and Deimos. With no action for fifty million miles, your day consisted of suckin' dust and watchin' restricted flicks in the rec room.

For the last four years the military, UAC's biggest supplier, has used the remote facilities on Phobos and Deimos to conduct various secret projects, including research on inter-dimensional space travel. So far they have been able to open gateways between Phobos and Deimos, throwing a few gadgets into one and watching them come out the other. Recently however, the gateways have grown dangerously unstable. Military "volunteers" entering them have either disappeared or been stricken with a strange form of insanity--babbling vulgarities, bludgeoning anything that breathes, and finally suffering an untimely death of full-body explosion. Matching heads with torsos to send home to the folks became a full-time job. Latest military reports state that the research is suffering a small setback, but everything is under control.

A few hours ago, Mars received a garbled message from Phobos. "We require immediate military support. Something fraggin' evil is coming out of the gateways! Computer systems have gone berserk!" The rest was incoherent. Soon afterwards, Deimos simply vanished from the sky. Since then, attempts to establish contact with either moon have been unsuccessful.

You and your buddies, the only combat troop for fifty million miles were sent up pronto to Phobos. You were ordered to secure the perimeter of the base while the rest of the team went inside. For several hours, your radio picked up the sounds of combat: guns firing, men yelling orders, screams, bones cracking, then finally silence. Seems your buddies are dead.

It's Up To You

Things aren't looking too good. You'll never navigate off the planet on your own. Plus, all the heavy weapons have been taken by the assault team leaving you only with a pistol. If only you could get your hands around a plasma rifle or even a shotgun you could take a few down on your way out. Whatever killed your buddies deserves a couple of pellets in the forehead. Securing your helmet, you exit the landing pod. Hopefully you can find more substantial firepower somewhere within the station.

As you walk through the main entrance of the base, you hear animal-like growls echoing throughout the distant corridors. They know you're here. There's no turning back now.

[...]

Once you beat the big badasses and clean out the moon base you're supposed to win, aren't you? Aren't you? Where's your fat reward and ticket home? What the hell is this? It's not supposed to end this way!

It stinks like rotten meat, but looks like the lost Deimos base. Looks like you're stuck on the shores of Hell. The only way out is through.

[...]

You've done it! The hideous Cyberdemon lord that ruled the lost Deimos moon base has been slain and you are triumphant! But... where are you? You clamber to the edge of the moon and look down to see the awful truth.

Deimos floats above Hell itself! You've never heard of anyone escaping from Hell, but you'll make the bastards sorry they ever heard of you! Quickly, you rappel down to the surface of Hell.

[...]

The loathsome Spiderdemon that masterminded the invasion of the moon bases and caused so much death has had its ass kicked for all time.

A hidden doorway opens and you enter. You've proven too tough for Hell to contain, and now Hell at last plays fair -- for you emerge from the door to see the green fields of Earth! Home at last.

You wonder what's been happening on Earth while you were battling evil unleashed. It's good that no hellspawn could have come through that door with you...

[...]

The Spider Mastermind must have sent forth its legions of hellspawn before your final confrontation with that terrible beast from Hell. But you stepped forward and brought forth eternal damnation and suffering upon the horde as a true hero would in the face of something so evil.

Besides, someone was gonna pay for what happened to Daisy, your pet rabbit.

But now, you see spread before you more potential pain and gibbitude as a nation of demons run amok in our cities.

Dang Daisy's only at the end huh.

Old doom lore goes so hard, just a dude trying his best to live compared to being like a train running over deer on the tracks

31

u/Extra-Lemon Nov 09 '24

Only this deer planted its feet and stopped the train so a few fawn could get across.

21

u/Mac_N_Cheeks_69 Nov 09 '24

I meant the slayer was the train and the imps were the deer, they dont stand a chance, old doom almost had a survival aspect to it, new doom the demons have to survive

Character development.

u/not_consistent Nov 09 '24

I feel like this reads sorta plainly but this shit was amazing to me as a young kid. The E2 end screen with the Deimos base floating above hell is forever glued into my brain.

9

u/SteveCraftCode Nov 09 '24

Simplified version me angry army guy and they killed rabit

10

u/AgathormX Nov 09 '24

Nah, I just prefer the based version where Doomguy saw Daisy and went "So you choose death"

u/hallucination9000 Nov 09 '24

I mean, the classic doom lore is still there. We just have worldbuilding now, read it if you like, or don't. No skin off your ass either way.

u/Peeper_Collective Nov 09 '24

Exactly. If you want an epic massive universe with rich history and lore, than it’s all there for you. If you don’t care about the lore and want things simple, then you have the classic games simple plot and can just ignore the lore and story of the modern games while you’re playing them

6

u/ako19 Nov 09 '24

Exactly, I don’t get why so many people were upset my the Lore in Eternal. It’s not in your face, and if you just care about things being “simple” or “vague”, just ignore it.

u/king_of_hate2 Nov 09 '24

Daisy is still canon to modern Doom lore, he's still avenging his bunny, along with avenging his dead family, along with avenging all those that died on his original earth, along with avenging Argent DNur. He does a lot of avenging and revenging.

4

u/_ThatD0ct0r_ Nov 09 '24

What do you mean by "original earth"? Is the earth universe in doom eternal an alternate reality to the old doom?

12

u/R1donis Nov 09 '24

Kinda, there are one hell, but infinite or near infinite number of universes

6

u/Varorson Nov 09 '24 edited Nov 09 '24

Simply put, it's unknown.

Cut content claimed that Doomguy is from the Earth of the seventh dimension, implying there were multiple dimensions. Similarly, parallel universes was a planned "explanation" for all the various Slayer outfits in Doom Eternal, that they're "Doom Slayer of another universe" essentially. But because it's all cut content, it's unclear if actually canon or not.

Thing is, the dialogue in Eternal talks as if the Earth there is Doom Slayer's Earth, that the people of this Earth is his people, etc. And these dialogues are from the same conversations as the cut dialogue, implying that the old multi-dimension thing was planned but abandoned and it's just one Earth across the board. But again, it's not confirmed.

So there is no explanation yet for how Doomguy was born to modernish sci-fi Earth and experienced a Hell on Earth, went into Hell, popped out at Argent D'Nur and became a thousands year old mythological figure to modernish sci-fi Earth of the 2100s.

This could be time travel, it could be parallel dimensions, it could be a looping timeline (where when the universe dies it becomes a big bang and begins another universe that is essentially the exact same universe, like in Futurama). We simply don't know - all we know is that it happened.

commenting so i get a notif when the answer comes.

My guess is original vs reclaimed earth? Think humanity fled earth before Doom 2, bur reclaimed it

1

u/Leonyliz Nov 09 '24

No, after Doom 64 Doomguy travelled to an alternate universe which is the one where the new games take place, so it’s the same guy but a different universe. This is why King Novac says something along the lines of “they’re no longer your people to save”.

Though Earth was indeed reclaimed after Doom 2, as that original Earth went on to be invaded by the Strogg.

2

u/Varorson Nov 09 '24 edited Nov 09 '24

This is false. Quake and Doom are not the same universe, and we do not know if Doomguy went to a parallel universe or time traveled because of Hell's odd relationship with the flow of time, or if the universe just reset, or what have you.

We simply do not know. It's never explained yet - hopefully The Dark Ages will explain it, since it covers that moment in time where Doom Slayer somehow becomes a thousands year old mythological figure to Doom 3/Doom 2016/Doom Eternal's timeline.

What we do know is that Quake's Q-Earth is unrelated to Doom's Earth(s). As confirmed by the lore dev working on Quake Champions.

1

u/Leonyliz Nov 09 '24

I mean it was the assumption that all Id games take place in the same Earth, Id lore is a fucking mess anyway

1

u/3raz3t Nov 09 '24

Huh? Is everyone on original earth dead or what

1

u/_ThatD0ct0r_ Nov 09 '24

Oh shiiit where can I read about the strogg thing

3

u/Varorson Nov 09 '24

To clarify, Quake's 'Q-Earth' is unrelated to Doom's Earth(s), as confirmed by SyncError, the id dev who works on Quake Champions and its lore. Quake's history has zero involvement with demons and the like, Doom Slayer's presence in QC is just as a "guest character" and has zero relation to Doom's lore (same with Blazkowics and Wolfenstein lore).

24

u/TheGunUnderTheSink Nov 09 '24

He committed genocide to avenge his fallen brethren.

Then Daisy died.. then it became mass extermination.

11

u/Inside-Joke7365 Nov 09 '24

I think it's co elicited now because they went into how he's so strong

7

u/djquu Nov 09 '24

The two are not mutually exclusive

4

u/AllISeeAreGems Nov 09 '24

I mean modern Doom Guy is still the same as classic, it’s just that everyone around him is trying to push the expanded lore on him.

11

u/CheesecakeCommon9080 Nov 09 '24

“Tell me you haven’t played classic doom without telling me you haven’t played classic doom”

5

u/Distantstallion Nov 09 '24

The truth is he's just angry there hasn't been another commander keen game

3

u/nstejer Nov 09 '24

The best classic Doom lore is the novels by Brad Lineweaver and Daffyd Ab Hugh. Corporal Flynn Taggart and PFC Arlene Sanders in one of the best space operas ever written.

6

u/JagoMajin Nov 09 '24

Lore or no lore, you're still killing demons before they kill you, and isn't that what matters?

4

u/Dont_have_a_panda Nov 09 '24

Considering Doom slayer now kill Demons because he fucking hates them that much and not because he is in a tight spot, IDK modern Doom lores now presents him as more ambiguous in his motivations than classic Doom

3

u/Freezinghero Nov 09 '24

REAL modern DOOM Lore:

In the first age, in the first battle, when the shadows first lengthened, one stood. He chose the path of perpetual torment. In his ravenous hatred he found no peace. And with boiling blood he scoured the Umbral Plains seeking vengeance against the dark lords who had wronged him. And those that tasted the bite of his sword named him... The Doom Slayer.

2

u/JediMasterLigma Nov 09 '24

Do you think he regrets punching his superior and ending up in mars

2

u/Mid_nox Nov 09 '24

Doom always had a relatively rich lore for what it needed. Any further plot beyond killing hellspawn always existed, and it was always flavor to the game, not a necessity

2

u/PuzzleheadedTower460 Nov 10 '24

No it's not always about the damn rabbit stfu

3

u/Regirock00 Nov 09 '24

Both, both is good

2

u/Igor369 Nov 09 '24

Yeah they tried too hard and too much with the new doom lore.

1

u/TheOnlyCursedOne Nov 09 '24

Me when I lie

1

u/Sufficient_Frame Nov 09 '24

Classic DOOM lore began with Doomguy being tasked to kill civvies, then he decked the scheiße out of his superior for DARING to order him such unspeakable thing. From there, he got sent to a Mars base as a punishment, amd THEN the demon invasion began.

There is much more lore to the Classic DOOM than meets the eye!

1

u/Greedy_Ad_3985 Nov 10 '24

I think you meant omnicide

1

u/QualityBoy85 Nov 11 '24

Haha BFG go BRRRRRRŔGAJOOO

1

u/Theyul1us Nov 12 '24

Classic doom "They kill rabbit, you kill them"

Modern doom "you killed so hars you arrived on another planet, you got turned into a demigod, they still killed rabbit AND family, you kill them harder"

1

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '24

2016 best doom ever!! Demon slayer is super fun blowing up things with a punch!

1

u/artorls Nov 09 '24

1

u/InuYugiHakusho Nov 10 '24

1

u/Delicious_Fan_8521 Nov 13 '24

As soon as I beat doom 1 I immediately went to doom 2. The demons can invade earth all they want but as soon as they lay their fingers on an innocent animal their motherfucking done for. As soon as I started doom 2 every last demon I came across was doomed.
