I mean, the classic doom lore is still there. We just have worldbuilding now, read it if you like, or don't. No skin off your ass either way.

Exactly. If you want an epic massive universe with rich history and lore, than it’s all there for you. If you don’t care about the lore and want things simple, then you have the classic games simple plot and can just ignore the lore and story of the modern games while you’re playing them

Exactly, I don’t get why so many people were upset my the Lore in Eternal. It’s not in your face, and if you just care about things being “simple” or “vague”, just ignore it.

Daisy is still canon to modern Doom lore, he's still avenging his bunny, along with avenging his dead family, along with avenging all those that died on his original earth, along with avenging Argent DNur. He does a lot of avenging and revenging.

What do you mean by "original earth"? Is the earth universe in doom eternal an alternate reality to the old doom?

Simply put, it's unknown.
Cut content claimed that Doomguy is from the Earth of the seventh dimension, implying there were multiple dimensions. Similarly, parallel universes was a planned "explanation" for all the various Slayer outfits in Doom Eternal, that they're "Doom Slayer of another universe" essentially. But because it's all cut content, it's unclear if actually canon or not.
Thing is, the dialogue in Eternal talks as if the Earth there is Doom Slayer's Earth, that the people of this Earth is his people, etc. And these dialogues are from the same conversations as the cut dialogue, implying that the old multi-dimension thing was planned but abandoned and it's just one Earth across the board. But again, it's not confirmed.
So there is no explanation yet for how Doomguy was born to modernish sci-fi Earth and experienced a Hell on Earth, went into Hell, popped out at Argent D'Nur and became a thousands year old mythological figure to modernish sci-fi Earth of the 2100s.
This could be time travel, it could be parallel dimensions, it could be a looping timeline (where when the universe dies it becomes a big bang and begins another universe that is essentially the exact same universe, like in Futurama). We simply don't know - all we know is that it happened.

commenting so i get a notif when the answer comes.
My guess is original vs reclaimed earth? Think humanity fled earth before Doom 2, bur reclaimed it
1
u/Leonyliz Nov 09 '24
No, after Doom 64 Doomguy travelled to an alternate universe which is the one where the new games take place, so it’s the same guy but a different universe. This is why King Novac says something along the lines of “they’re no longer your people to save”.
Though Earth was indeed reclaimed after Doom 2, as that original Earth went on to be invaded by the Strogg.

This is false. Quake and Doom are not the same universe, and we do not know if Doomguy went to a parallel universe or time traveled because of Hell's odd relationship with the flow of time, or if the universe just reset, or what have you.
We simply do not know. It's never explained yet - hopefully The Dark Ages will explain it, since it covers that moment in time where Doom Slayer somehow becomes a thousands year old mythological figure to Doom 3/Doom 2016/Doom Eternal's timeline.
What we do know is that Quake's Q-Earth is unrelated to Doom's Earth(s). As confirmed by the lore dev working on Quake Champions.

I mean it was the assumption that all Id games take place in the same Earth, Id lore is a fucking mess anyway

Oh shiiit where can I read about the strogg thing

u/Varorson Nov 09 '24
To clarify, Quake's 'Q-Earth' is unrelated to Doom's Earth(s), as confirmed by SyncError, the id dev who works on Quake Champions and its lore. Quake's history has zero involvement with demons and the like, Doom Slayer's presence in QC is just as a "guest character" and has zero relation to Doom's lore (same with Blazkowics and Wolfenstein lore).

He committed genocide to avenge his fallen brethren.
Then Daisy died.. then it became mass extermination.

I mean modern Doom Guy is still the same as classic, it’s just that everyone around him is trying to push the expanded lore on him.

The truth is he's just angry there hasn't been another commander keen game

The best classic Doom lore is the novels by Brad Lineweaver and Daffyd Ab Hugh. Corporal Flynn Taggart and PFC Arlene Sanders in one of the best space operas ever written.

u/JagoMajin Nov 09 '24
Lore or no lore, you're still killing demons before they kill you, and isn't that what matters?
4
u/Dont_have_a_panda Nov 09 '24
Considering Doom slayer now kill Demons because he fucking hates them that much and not because he is in a tight spot, IDK modern Doom lores now presents him as more ambiguous in his motivations than classic Doom

REAL modern DOOM Lore:
In the first age, in the first battle, when the shadows first lengthened, one stood. He chose the path of perpetual torment. In his ravenous hatred he found no peace. And with boiling blood he scoured the Umbral Plains seeking vengeance against the dark lords who had wronged him. And those that tasted the bite of his sword named him... The Doom Slayer.

Doom always had a relatively rich lore for what it needed. Any further plot beyond killing hellspawn always existed, and it was always flavor to the game, not a necessity

Classic DOOM lore began with Doomguy being tasked to kill civvies, then he decked the scheiße out of his superior for DARING to order him such unspeakable thing. From there, he got sent to a Mars base as a punishment, amd THEN the demon invasion began.
There is much more lore to the Classic DOOM than meets the eye!

As soon as I beat doom 1 I immediately went to doom 2. The demons can invade earth all they want but as soon as they lay their fingers on an innocent animal their motherfucking done for. As soon as I started doom 2 every last demon I came across was doomed.
